View Full Version : Ranged worth it?

<DIV>I have yet to even try to get my ranged ability up. Been playing so long without it, and considering so many of my abilities are capable of pulling from a distance so why bother working it up? I mean sure I get it for PVP since you can plink away at people running from you, but since I play on a normal server I don't see the point. We're given an auto attack feature with the bow which only seems useful for pulling. If we have no abilities to do any real damage with our ranged shot, why bother working up a skill to do mediocre damage? And that doesn't even cover the pangs of gettting a decent bow and keeping stock on arrows. Just seems like a big waste of money and time for me as we're hardly a class to do great amounts of damage with a bow anyway. Why flick arrows at something when I can do way more damage by getting in it's face?</DIV>

Get a decent bow (Raincaller is nice for T6 and is a heritage quest), go afk shooting a fish with tin arrows for a couple of hours to get to 350/350 ranged, then swap to decent ammo.Anywhere you can pull with a damage spell (yeah, yeah that does limit it a bit), use a macro like:/usea Abominable Wrath/g Sauntering in this direction - %t/togglerangedattack<div></div>Then complain of your lack of damage, if thats what you really see.p.s. The extra 5m range with a long bow is very nice for pulling, and I know not everyone raids, but if you do, its very nice to have a ranged autoattack for some fights.

<DIV>Definitely worth it in my opinion. With the Ghostly Bow of Blytze or whatever it's called I can crit for over 3k, what spell are you going to pull with that does more damage than that, Harm touch? Or if I'm using my Raincaller, it procs very often with a 5 second stun(usually happens back to back), you can get a couple of spells off and another bow shot before the mob ever gets back to your group; sometimes I get mobs down 1/4 life on the pull!</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Also on raids if a mob has a particularly nasty AoE it's really nice to be able to do decent ranged damage.</DIV>

<DIV>Isn't the Ghostly Bow a hard bow to get your hands on? I know a couple rangers who'd give vital parts of their bodies to have said bow, let alone a tank that wouldn't have nearly the same use out of the bow. Now Raincaller on the other hand might be doable. That stun is really nice...I have a ranger that I duo with all the time that just loves that bow and it's sick what she can do with it.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>You're telling me I can get 3k crit hits with an auto attack from a bow? That must be at least 1k normal hits though...wow, that just blows my mind when my sword auto attack is only a few hundred at best. Can anyone else confirm these sort of numbers?</DIV> <P>Message Edited by Hugsnkissums on <SPAN class=date_text>12-26-2006</SPAN> <SPAN class=time_text>09:34 PM</SPAN></P><p>Message Edited by Hugsnkissums on <span class=date_text>12-26-2006</span> <span class=time_text>09:35 PM</span>

The pity is that many of us did that a million years ago and picked not the bow (and most who aren't hoarders like me sold or sacrificed it by now)... though I bet you could petition it if you really wanted the bow. I believe grizzlefazzle's bow is better (I keep both on my dirge, backup, but I use grizzlefazzle on the dirge). </P> <P>I just did the Raincaller hert yesterday and have not been able to play with it yet, but when I realized we could use a bow I checked the broker and picked up a Nightfrost longbow for about 12g. It's lvl 64 treasured, 16 sta, 22 agi, 12 int (woot int) 60H, 50P, 118-355 damage, I haven't adorned it yet.</P> <P>For someone who said they've lived this long without a bow... I do not intend to use mine all the time, I dont find it worth it for pulling (fast swaping out bow & symbol doesn't work when you have a shield, it swaps the shield), but if you raid think about very long fights when you run OOP or severe AEs that will kill you.</P>

<DIV>The Ghostly Bow of Bylze is one of the early rewards in Claymore line, very easy to get. The damage on it is 65-585, so yes you can hit for some massive damage with it, especially with melee crit AA. The downside is that delay on it is 9 seconds, however delay doesnt really matter much at all if you are only using it for the pull.</DIV>

I got that bow when KOS came out and sold it to vendor cuz I can't use it at all. ;( Now, it's lost FOREVER to me. Argh. 9 sec bow is very hard to obtain. I wanted longest delay but biggest bang per shot. </P> <P>I LOVE bows given to SK. Made things much better even in PVE. It's free added damage. How can we ignore that huh? I usually body pull then pulled myself back in the camp. I always plinked 1 arrow while moving backward to camp then hit taunt. It's free added aggro plus extra damage usually 1kish. Without bow, you lose out some taunt and extra damage before group starts to hit it after I ae taunt.. </P> <P>Bow is very good for SKs cuz we got snare dd wrath line. Without horse on, we can just kite heroics around plinking away and re-snare over and over again.. Or on horse, just snare then plink away few hits before mob finally came into melee range and hit you.. That is very nice added damage that we haven't gotten before. </P>

<DIV>If you aren't using a bow at least sometimes then you are denying yourself alot of extra damage.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Bows like all weapons are damage rated by strict auto-attack, how much damage you would do just standing and swinging (or shooting in this case). Since bows mostly have a 7 second if not greater delay, it assumes you fire 1 shot, then wait 7 seconds, hence the enormous hits you can get.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>However nothing says you have to wait 7 seconds doing nothing, if you time it right you can shield bash a mob, backout, and fire an arrow before stun wears off. Around 2 seconds to get a 7 second damage rating hit, thats like a swing with a 1 hander for upwards of 3k depending on the bow + crit etc. with a 2 second delay, if you do that 3 or 4 times in a fight thats thousands of extra damage.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>You can also fire on the run which can be priceless, in such zones are Varsoons if you fail on a named and are faced with that wall of flame, just hop in hit tab and shoot, easiest pulls ever.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>And lastly, bows have huge proc rates due to delay, pulling with one is almost guarenteing half if not all your proc buffs will trigger, huge extra damage, debuff, whatever the procs might be, on the pull.</DIV>

<P>tubby touch!</P> <P>Bows are a must have! I use raincaller also...I can't explain how many PVP kills were cashed in because of my bow. 2-3k per crit, when I pull in groups... stun lands 80-100% of the time. which means 5 second stun. group throws ranged magic.. the mobs at 50% before it gets to group. </P> <P>in some cases, I do more DPS with bow than melee. If I'm not MT, I hang out in the back with the casters and sling arrows and spells.</P>
