noob question about Dual wield vs. sword and board

<div></div>as the subject states, i have a level 13 Shadowknight, i was wondering what is better? should i dual wield( i dont even know if i can) or should i use a sword and shield?and what does the "protection" stat mean on the shield? at first i was thinking it added to armor level (mitigation) but now i dont think it does, but i dont know what it does exactly either.thanks in advance.<div></div>

However, when I solo, I find that the offensive stance - I think thats what it is, it reduces mit, STR, etc but only increases slash, pierce, bash skills - really has a serious impact on my health. So now I only solo using defensive stance, especially on group mobs. What do you guys use when soloing and what  stance?</P> <P>What stat should SK focus on? If its blue/white heroics, Im in defensive stance. Rak'leklo has better stats and a nice lifetap proc, Gaudralek has a higher damage rating, a standard damage proc and lower stats, the one in my sig is Rak'leklo.

I'd like to get Gaudralek, makes for better DPS while raiding, Rak'leklo for soloing (Lifetap Proc), and of course a 1h/Shield for groups.

I am almost 40 now, I tend to stick with offensive stance with a shield, question I have is, when my legendary or better  2h dropps, do people run in defensive mode with a 2h? (switching out quickly to offensive for MT or any big damage and then switching back)<div></div>
