I was wondering what you guys think is the best utility class to have in a group with a bruiser, with the bruiser being the tank of course. With the arrival of EoF I was planning on trio-boxing 3 new Fae characters for a quick powerlevel. Currently going with Bruiser and Defiler, could use some help on picking out the utility class... leaning towards Dirge or Coercer.... insight into either of these classes and how they relate to a bruiser would be appreciated... or would you go with another class all together?

I haven't played a coercer so I can't say much about them other than that they seem like thay are hard to play well based on the differences in quality I've noticed between the ones I've grouped with.

I have played a dirge up into tier 6. I love dirges, don't get me wrong, but you can get at least half of their benefit from an AFK dirge on auto-follow. Once the buffs are set up the next most valuable thing a dirge offers is the debuffs. Dirges have one ranged attack and one positional, if I remember correctly. The ranged is so-so, the flank attack a nice debuff, but if they are too much trouble you can skip them. Of the rest like half of the debuffs are CAs, so the dirge needs to be in melee range, the rest can be cast from a distance.

Dirge buffs and debuffs are mostly melee oriented so they would go with a bruiser quite nicely. They buff strength, avoidance (defense or parry, I forget which), power regen, etc.

Caveat: I played my dirge a year ago, much may have changed since then.

Message Edited by Daghammerskold on 10-10-2006 05:47 PM

If it's just going to be you playing all the chars, then I would say Dirge for sure. The benefits from the buffs, the speed enhancments, and the higher levels rez ability make it well worthwhile.

If you were playing with someone else? Then I might lean towards Coercer. The only reason I'd do this is the Coercer's ability to enahnce your power regen ( I think they have this?) and the fact that they can charm high lvl pets. If you can keep them charmed, you've just added a fourth member to your group who, if you chose the pet correctly, can cast and/or heal as well as extra damage, making it faster to burn up the xp. Dirge would also work wonders for the above listed reasons, plus the extra DPS, but I watched a high level Coercer charm Azalin and then solo the other named giant lizard in the Breeding Grounds and have been pro coercer ever since
