For those who aren't familiar, En Garde is an ability Swashbucklers get at level 65. It has a 3 minute recast and a duration of 36 seconds. When active, every time the Swash is parried/riposted/deflected/blocked, or himself parries/blocks, inflicts 300-400 melee damage 100% of the time.

For a Bruiser, who is deflecting attacks multiple times a second, means a Swash with this ability active can chew up a Bruiser in 5 seconds or less if nothing is done to stop it.

I have not yet found a way to stand toe-to-toe with a Swash using this ability correctly... the only way i've beaten a Swash properly using it is to fear / mez and try to run out the LONG 36 second timer before attacking again. Stunning and trying to burn them doesn't work if they're in defensive using a shield (as they should be when fighting a Bruiser using En Garde) since it continues to proc when they block/parry. Their DPS is simply staggering against Bruisers when it's active.

Has anyone found an effective way around this ability? I never used to fear any class, but i am now very timid around Swashies because of this ability.

I have the same trouble. I do pretty much the same as you: fear, mez and a hopeful combination of defensive stance+mitigation buff until En Garde is down. Which is bad enough 1 v 1 and even worse if there's a group.

So I'd be interested in someone supplying a more successful tactic too.

I haven't encountered this before, but I've fought plenty of brigs/swash using the Lunge Reversal AA. It doesn't seem that effect me that much because I deflect the proc 5/6 times.

Message Edited by wayfaerer on 07-25-2006 02:02 PM

The warrior's buckler reversal does the same thing. Only it's up permanently.

It doesn't proc every single parry/deflect, and it says something about recasting itself every 20s... however my brother's zerker had it and saw it proc 3 times in a row sometimes. It procs off and on, but in his fights against NPCs it was going off at least every 3rd or 4th parry/block/etc.

There's no waiting this one out though.. so you have to basically blow past it somehow.

Since it's an attack though, it still needs to land to do that damage (just like a riposte). So if you have high enough avoidance, you might trigger it often, but end up avoiding them anyways.

That might work better against the "always on" version... the swashy one would be best to wait until the buff is gone.

If they wanted to "fix" the Agility line... a riposting ability like this would be a good start.

actually if you got a move that did 100% avoid/deflection/parry you will die even faster, because as it is right now, nothing can dodge en garde counter attack.

To do riposting damage whenever you or your enemy blocks/deflects, etc. Would be thematic to the Agility line too.

Better than freaking minimal reduction to recast times. Blah.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but through using mez, fear, and our stuns, can't we basically keep the swashie [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] near incapacitated for 30+ seconds?

Well the stuns will cause the riposte damage - and that's what we're trying to avoid. Mez and Fear work though - if not resisted. Best to mez, run like a girl, fear, run like a girl, knockout combo, kick their teeth in.

Well we're talking about a level 65 ability. I don't know about the rest of you, but I have about a 25% or less land rate on fear and mez at 70. It's probably best to just run for it.
