View Full Version : RPing a Bruiser

I'd like to hear the opinion of some seasoned Bruisers on RPing this class. A Monk is very much a kung-fu style fighter - calm and tranquil when not in battle. I see the Bruiser as more a kick-your-[expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] all-out brawler; tough and gritty at all times. Does a Bruiser have any of the tranqui-monk qualities, or are they just simply brawling fighters? How would (or do) you RP your Bruiser? Thanks in advance. :smileyhappy:

The backstory for my bruiser is that he's a former Maj'Dul pit fighter. That kind of explains the mish-mash of fighting styles he uses. He just kind of picked up moves here and there from watching and fighting other contestants in the pits. That's why you'll see him do a kidney punch and eye gouge followed up by a spin kick that he ends in that goofy monk-surfer pose (man I hate that move) He's pretty brutal and does whatever it takes to take down his opponent.

At one point his handler made some bad bets on the games and suddenly disapeared. At that point, with no manager, and no desire to sell himself out to some other low-life promoter, he decided to head out into the wider world and see what kind of life he could make for himself. A few hundred quests, and a few thousand bashed orc skulls later he's not doing too bad.

While he's a barbarian I tried to make him look as "Maj'Dulian" as possible. He's got dark skin, a shaved head with a topknot and a braided goatee as well as a name that I felt would fit a citizen of this desert metropolis. I've also tried to only use fist weapons such as wraps, knuckles, or claws.

These are all so great - I truly appreciate your answers. Gives me a little more to go on...

When i do get to RP a little I have always taken on a Ultimate fighting kind of role. You know the guys that get in the ring with swmi padded gloves rather then boxing gloves. Usually trianed in multiple martial art disciplines.

Very up in your face gimme you best shot before I tear the limbs from your body and beat you to death with them - kind of attitude.

Message Edited by Mantua1 on 04-28-2006 07:25 AM

Bruiser is more of a name of the fighting style. aka street fighter

How you choose to make your roleplay background story is completely up to you.

if you need tips on how a girl or boy would become a streetfighter, well there are endless reasons.

orphan, tough growing up without parents.
wicked, disfynctional brain ,ends up hungry for blood.
alchoholic, grew up on a bar, aka bar brawler.

etc etc endless options if you give it some thought.

I had a great time RPing my Bruiser. Some things I would do was, when with a group, I would

/point at a mob and say "that (name creature) just looked at me wrong, I'm gona go kill em!"

My group would always laugh at that and it always got people into character a bit. I would also mess with my teamates in a friendly Bruiser way by walking up to them, getting face to face close, and give a back handed compliment. Maybe something like "you are a mighty fighter...for a rat..you have earned Pnocks respect." Always acting the part of a cocky brawler but making sure I am encouraging my mates at the same time.

Another eample would be when helpig out ur mate. It's always good to ask them if they need you for something and offer your help....so do it Bruiser style...like...

"Stain, I am still in the mood to knock some heads, you need my fists for anything my friend?"

If you die, just say "Ha! I let em win just for fun, now lets go kill em for our fun."

/Point "I dun like the way that Orc over there stared at you, time for me to..."

You get the idea. It is very fun once you get rolling.

You could have a hot key that says in a middle of a fight or right before it..."Lets go give him the Right Hand of fellowship, if you know what I mean."

Have fun and always act cocky and impetuous but never toward the detriment of your relationships...they should all go hand in hand.

Im an evil monk who likes to steal jumjum anything and pick on pecks, dwarves and pretty much anyone smaller then me. I believe in more force = uberness. Your character's background can be such a bruiser. Be careful of the Dreadnaughts in Freeport.
I just started a bruiser a few days ago and I am loveing it so far. I have made her emote persona an insain Dark Elf. I think that makes a perfect bruiser personality.

I always giggle and say thanks to the mobs that mini and full ding me and voice emote everyone I meet, to help make the voices stop, then go into combat mode and voice emote that the voices are telling me to hurt them. Then if they challenge me to a duel, I just feign death.

Nocifer Deathblade

Since Hulk is my lifetime favorite of comic character and I'm diehard fan as well. So I wanted to RP Hulk as alternative character (Nocifer is still my 7 years EQ character and 1.5 years EQ2 and love to RP him as well as my own design while Hulk is already invented by Lee).

I thought that Ogre Bruiser would fit Hulk nicely in SOGA model. I named him Hulksmasher and created appearance as close as Hulk. Green skinned and dark green rough hair and nice naked chest to flex etc. Heck, lvl 20 fluff goes nicely with him as well other than floating.

I made him go on str path strictly cuz that's what Hulk does. He fights with barehands most of the time and each punch is PAINFUL. So Bruiser fits that nicely cuz his mod is dps mod means he hits HARD plus double attacks and extra 20% dps goes nicely as well. I am loving him every min.. I try to make all +s to fit Hulk's comic persona. Like high hp and hp reg etc, taking ALL strengths I can get my hands on. I soloed him 100% so far from lvl 1 to 43(now) cuz Hulk comic character solos alot as well and strength AA path is great for soloist in very small non-raiding guild. If I wanna group, I just use Nocifer..

Hulk can imidiate enemy. Hulk can land after LONG jump without hurting (safe fall).. Hulk self-heals well so is bruiser.. Etc. Most things fit just great and I'm happy with my alternative character.

Message Edited by Nocifer Deathblade on 05-02-2006 06:18 AM

I think I have a lot of influences, but I must say, for most part, I act as Porter would act. Porter was the character in a Mel Gibson movie, a tough guy with a bunch of great one-liners. The dialogue often felt like Sam Spade novels, campy but fun. I see a Bruiser as a monk that isn't interested in all that development of self, inner-peace, Zen agnosticism stuff. He learned at the feet of his Master until he had learned all he wanted. He uses his skills for personal gain (though I don't RP him as evil.) He is disinterested in all the chatter, just wants to get in the fight. If he can get what he wants without breaking bones (Feign Death, our Fear, Mez-line) so be it, but if it takes a throw-down, then that is embraced, too. Aloof, impatient with too much talk about tactics, fearless and ruthless. He stays out of other people's business and expects them to stay out of his. Occasionally sarcastic, he talks, but not a lot. Quick to anger, slow to forgive. Not a lovable sort, no mincing elf, but a stouter ally cannot be found. He likes to do his thinking with his hands, and the gods help those who stand in his way!

Hope that helps :smileyvery-happy:

Redmouser, Bruiser

These are all great - I'm getting a much better idea of the "general" idea of a Bruiser. I'm really enjoying everyone's posts.

When I LARP my bruiser (and inevitably end up in jail after the mauling of many wizards shouting LIGHTNING BOLT) its like Marv's size/toughness/haymakers from Sin City, but with less psychosis and alot more Pai Mei style discipline.
