My question is how do monks compare to the other fighter classes at tanking?

From what I've read they out dps all other fighters except maybe a bruiser so, it would only seem fair that they can't tank as well as a crusader or warrior. Is this true? If so, how much better are the other classes at tanking?

If they aren't as good as the other classes at tanking and can never touch scout or mage dps they seem kind of pointless to play from a pve (grouping) perspective.

In addition, what roles do they play in raids?

Monks are good tanks, but not as good as guardians in raids, nor supposed to be. But very good in groups and can replace any other tank.

Monks are versatile, you can always change to DPS side from Tanking or opposite direction (or can find the middle). Other tanks can't do that. This gives great solo AND duo advantage as well (being better DPS than a Guardian, being better tank than a Ranger)

Monks are fun to play, fast and furious without being paper unlike scouts trying to get no aggro or standing there spamming taunts unlike plates.

And all those might sound like cliche but...

Monks need dedication and love to perfectise it and it is up to you.

And as roles in raid: There are places a monk better tank even not much in number, main role in my opinion is puller, off-tank in main tank group.

Message Edited by selch on 04-30-2006 01:21 PM

Monks sacrifice being the best at one thing for being good at a lot of things.

Most would agree we are tier 3 dps. Above bards and enchanters, below the other mages and scouts. This is a very general statement. Differences in gear, skills, and player ability can often have us compare differently then what I have stated above. The new achivement system also can make large differences from one Monk to the next, and I think most would agree by focusing on the right ones we can move up into tier 2 dps.

Tanking isn't so cut and dry. There's two main points to tanking: Aggro control and Staying Alive

Aggro Control:

Single Opponent: This is where we shine. IMO brawlers hold single target aggro best of all the fighters.

Single Group: We have to work hard to keep aggro here, but we can still perform the job. Warriors (especially berserkers) have an advantage.

Multiple Groups: This is really rough on us, and should be avoided anytime possible. But we can still do it. Warriors (especially berserkers) are much better suited.

Additional Notes: Stuns possibly hurt us more for aggro control (especially against groups) then warriors, as they retain the use of their proc taunt and we lose ours while stunned.

Staying Alive: Any of the fighter classes can stay alive in single group heroic level fighting just fine.

Guardians have clearest advantage in this category. They have skills that allow them to absorb killing blows with a tower shield. For this reason Guardians are usually chosen as raid main tanks. This is not as big of a concern in standard group play.

Berserkers probably fall just below guardians in this category as they have a lot of similar health and mitigation buffs as the guardian and can use more or less all the same equipment, but lack the tower shield absorption.

As much as I hate to admit it, Crusader's ability to ward, heal themselves and/or drain life, and carry superior mitigation gives them an edge over brawlers in the staying alive category.

Brawlers come in last in this category. Equipped, spec'd out, and with the right achievement choices they don't have to be far behind. But there it is.

Additional Notes: Each fighter has certain resist(s) tied to the defensive stance that can come into play.

IMO, tanks should be chosen based on who can build the MOST aggro for the encounter at hand, and manage to stay alive. Often it seems folks focus on the second part, and don't give as much thought to the first.

Message Edited by Rrawl on 05-01-2006 04:57 PM

As for raid roles, no other fighter class can give as much avoidance to a MT or Off-tank as a brawler type. If you don't think that's a valid role, take a look at parses where you are directly responsible for preventing damage to the MT or OT.

As to the other points. Yeah. I've not got zerkers at the top of the food chain. They can tank better and do more damage while tanking than we can. Guardians are still best against the hardest mobs in the game, however a zerker tanking trash epics does on average 1.4k-2.2k DPS while tanking (in our guild). I'd say that's a whole arseload more aggro than brawler will ever generate while tanking epic trash mobs.

Yes, ther zerke was out dpsing our predators, sorcerers, mages, and brawlers while being the MT. When not MT, he generally has to hold back on DPS otherwise he'll hit 2k+ DPS and promptly gain aggro and die.

Regards,

Croaker

Message Edited by Sslarrga on 05-01-2006 11:18 PM

You're talking about groups of mobs right Croaker, not single target? Berserkers do awesome against groups.

Yeh Zerker DMG on groups of mobs is awesome (we cannot get close) - even when they are MT, but on a solo mob we can match / beat em with the right spec.

Also, comparing dps isn't exactly the same as comparing total hate generation.
