Pirate Island is a good place to go a-peltin'. No cumbersome ore or stone nodes to get in the way...

On Everfrost the pelts seem to be the "rarest" of the T6 rares too. They go for about 2.5 pp on the vendors, Cobalt, Vandium and the Roots are 1.5 and up. Ironwood is a "steal" at 80gp and up. I wonder what the ratio of Plate vs Leather classes is. If there are more Plate classes maybe thats why Cobalt is easier to obtain.

I believe that in one of the recent updates was to increase the chance of getting rares from rock nodes. Also there may or may not be a bug with trapping dens that mean you only have the chance of a rare pelt if you would have harvested a pelt that time and not meat. On runnyeye the pelts go for 2p+, I financed all my armour by sticking to the rocks and selling spare rares. I would guess as more people start raiding the rare chest drops will start to be more common.

Message Edited by MadBarman on 11-22-2005 08:31 AM
Yes, leather is the rarest T6 rare on Innothule too and I believe the reason is that animal dens are just harder to find in large groups than the other nodes. I suppose lumber nodes also have the same problem but the demand for Ironwood isn't as high as for Scaled pelts. There may actually be the same number of rock nodes as there are animal dens and lumber but the problem isn't the number of them, its that animal dens and lumber are spread out all around while rock nodes can be found in groupings in caves and around cliff bases. Also, I believe that animal dens, lumber, roots and shrubs are all on the same "node table" while rocks (stones and ore) are on their own "node table." So when you do find an area with animal dens and lumber and you harvest them all, when they respawn you might get a majority of shrubs and roots and only a few animal dens and lumber. With rocks you know every time they respawn you'll either get a stone or ore.

Ditto on Unrest. Pelts were 2.5p where as most other T6 rares are 80g-1.5p range. I was fortunate enough harvest 2 in the space of 20 minutes this weekend.

Pelts are pretty rare on Neriak as well. They've gone down a bit from 3pp recently to about 1.5 to 2pp. I've never harvested one myself, though I've spent hours looking.

Took me about a week of dedicated harvesting to get 6 scaled pelts. Now I need 2 more for a cestus & a cestii. :smileysad:

I was lucky enough to snag a scaled pelt for 1.7pp on Lucan last night. But again, there were no brokers involved. Guy shouted in OOC that he found one and I hit him up fast. The ones put on the broker aren't seeming to last, even at 3 and 4 pp a piece.

I still didn't find any T6 pelts on Oasis even though it's a part of my daily routine. Th prices on Oasis range anywhere from 2.5PP to 5PP. About a month ago when I first considered buying them from a broker and checked the prices I was unpleasantly suprised and decided to wait. Well ... now there are none available, all sold out even the ones at 5 PP a piece.

So, I'd say if you can find it for 2.5 PP and can afford it buy it immediately.

I think the "problem" you are witnessing is that everyone mines rocks and stones because they know they'll sell those rares. Everyone wants spell upgrades, heavy armor wearers need cobalt and most of the jewelry is nice also.

However, you will *not* find a majority of people out there harvesting dens. They just don't do it. Pelts don't sell as well. Therefore they seem more rare because they are less harvested, and that implied rareness leads to price gouging.

My two cents, anyway.

You'll always have people "cherry picking" nodes, and this gives many many dens in Feerrott. Currently, I'm harvesting in Feerrott for my monk, I got fields and fields of dens, surely I'd get some pelts.. no? Guess what? Everytime I dedicate a whole evening on the harvesting I got 500+ pelts and not one rare pelt did drop. If it was a "rare" it was a Luminous Tooth, which is totally worthless and not tradeable for a pelt. When I tried the -occasional- lumber or rock, well, I got some rubies and cedar. I'm harvesting in advance for my monk and in EL it took me 4 dedicated evenings to get 7 pelts, but it seems I'm not getting ANY in Feerrott. Same goes for Tier 6, only got rares from rocks and lumber. Never from dens and roots, which are the ones that I really want, lol.

I think we don't see many rare pelts because SOE hasn't normalized the chance of getting rares out of dens yet.

Any time you pick at an ore, you either get indium or one of two rares (lambent, cobalt). When you pick at gemstone, you get a beryllium with a chance of lambent/vanadium or nacre with a chance of lambent/pearl.

When you pick at a den, you have an X percentage chance of getting meat with a chance of lambent, or a 100-X percentage chance of getting a pelt with a further check of lambent OR scaled pelt.

Simply put, if the chance of pulling a regular pelt vs a piece of meat is 66%, your chances are lowered by 66% off the bat versus rock/root nodes. That right there is enough to deter harvesters from picking dens. The market for pelts is much lower (2 types of brawler only weapons, druid/brawler armor, bags) than cobalt (14 classes wear the armor, almost every class can use a cobalt made weapon/secondary item) or vanadium/pearl (spell upgrades for all and jewelry for all).

If I were harvesting for pure profit, I'd pass every den on the simple fact that rare pelts sell for maybe... 2.5p on my server whereas rare rocks sell for 2p-2.25p... but I'll get multiple rare rocks that I know will sell fast whereas I might get 1 pelt if I'm lucky and it might sit for a while. Of course, I've only got 1 rare pelt and 1 cobalt in my harvesting time. So, what do I know?

Yep, pelts seem to be more rare than the other T6 rares. I have harvested by far more traps than anything else in SS, and have to date gotten 1 pearl, 1 vanadium, 3 wood, 2 roots.. and 1 pelt.

The prices on the broker are outrageous on highkeep. Not as expensive as 5p, but around 3 p on average.. more expensive than all the other rares. Am thinking that not only are the pelts more rare, but more people are looking for rocks than pelts so there are less for sale. I know a lot of people who have their skills up in mining, foraging and foresting, but not trapping.

Sucks so much I put my fury in VLA because I can afford to buy the roots.
I heard in chat the other day that they screwed up the coding for Pelts. You only have a chance to harvest a Rare pelt if you were going to harvest a pelt to begin with. Since your chances to harvest a pelt are 1 in 3, you actually need to roll a 3 (1 to 3 for a pelt) and then roll a 1000 (1 to 1000 for a rare) on the virtual dice Good luck with that.

Two side notes:

I've gotten a fair amount of rares from common chests lately, including a pelt (and several pearls).

If you are going to buy a pelt, only do so on Sunday night or Monday (after folks have had a long weekend of harvesting). The price difference is from 2p to 4p less at the end of the weekend. During the week I often see them going from 3p to 5p. On Sundays they are 1.5p (Steamfront).

It shouldn't matter much really. I have 32p now and another 30p worth of crap to sell. I can't find something to blow the cash on. And trust me, I try.... The Master drops are stupid rare. And places my little band can handle like Roost, Tables and Poets seem to drop the same [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] master chests each time. So much for randomness.

Oooops

/rant off!

Although (some time ago) it took me 3-4 evenings in Enchanted Lands to get 7 T4 pelts, I never got a T5 pelt out of Feerrott or Everfrost. The only 'rare' I got from dens in Feerrott are luminous teeth, a whole bunch even. I never got a T6 pelt from DOF either. This was so obvious that it was bugged coz all the other nodes kept giving rares. PS: I think the roots have the same problem.
