EverQuest II Monk FAQ
Where can I find the Monk community?
The Monk forum on the official EQ2 forums is a great resource for questions and conversation.

In game, you can join the cross-server Monk channel by typing "/joinchannel crushbone.allmonks". Please note that /whochannel does not work correctly on cross-server channels, so it's less empty than it might look.

What is a Monk?
Monks are fighters who tank primarily by avoiding the attacks of their enemies. They also do good damage, especially when they aren't tanking. Like all Fighters, Monks have a full line of taunt and AE taunt skills.

A Monk begins life as a fighter. At 10, a Monk follows the path of the brawler. At 20, Qeynos brawlers become Monks, and Freeport brawlers become bruisers.

Some useful quotes from the official class descriptions on EQ2Players.com:

Fighters use brute strength and sturdy weapons to protect their allies and keep their enemies at bay. [source]

Fighters are most effective on the front line of battle, where they can protect their weaker comrades from harm – a process often referred to as “Tanking." They also do a respectable amount of damage in toe-to-toe fighting. [source]

Brawlers fight with their bodies and simple weapons to great effect, and their light armor allows them to easily evade the attacks of their adversaries. Brawlers are intermediate students of combat arts, having progressed beyond the rudimentary skills of fighters, but still aspiring to the ranks of bruisers or monks. [source]

A brawler makes a decent main tank, but suffers somewhat from his poor damage mitigation ability. A brawler makes a very good secondary tank, however, using combat arts like Defend to improve the tanking ability of the main tank, and at the same time delivering excellent damage. [source]

Brawlers are able to solo well. They will, however, take some damaging hits due to their decreased ability to mitigate damage. This is made up for by an enhanced ability to avoid being hit altogether, and good damage dealing capability. [source]

The Brawler Class Guide on EQ2Players.com is a good introduction to the brawler class. EQ2Players.com does not currently have a class guide available for the Monk subclass.

How do I become a Monk?
On the Isle of Refuge, choose to become a fighter. At level 9, go seek out [need NPC name] in South Qeynos to learn about the classes available. Once you've tried them all, you will be asked which class you prefer. Choose brawler. Once you reach level 18 you can begin the quest to become a Monk. Speak with Sensei Makoto in the dojo in the Elddar Grove.

What race should I pick?
The general consensus is that race currently matters very little. Some races are naturally stronger or more agile, but by endgame the 10 point stat difference is mostly meaningless. Pick something that you like looking at. The only thing your race affects is your Racial Traditions (see below) and which city you start in.

Monks are a good-aligned class, so you must be a resident of Qeynos. This means it will be easy for one of the good races to become a Monk, though evil races can become Monks after betraying Freeport and joining Qeynos.

Can Monks solo?
Yes. At all level ranges you should be able to kill a white-con solo mob without too much risk. At some levels, a green heroic encounter is also doable, though with more risk.

Do Monks fill the tank role or the DPS role?
(DPS is an acronym for "damage per second". When used as a noun, it describes the group role of "killing the mob quickly while not actually tanking.")

Monks are members of the fighter archtype, and fighters are defined as tanks. Monks are capable of tanking for XP groups from 1-60 without a problem. Monks also do excellent DPS, rivaling most scouts and summoners on single targets. Mages easily outdamage us on fights with large numbers of mobs, as Monks have very little AE damage.

The raiding endgame is still being heavily tuned right now, so there's no firm opinion on how Monks are faring as raid tanks. While we excel at holding agro on a single target, named and epic mobs have a very high to-hit bonus which makes it difficult for us to avoid damage well.

Monks do well in the DPS role, especially against single targets. Most of a Monk's high damage skills have 30s reuse timers, so in a typical XP group they'll be able to use them twice per pull. Monks lack the effective AE damage of mages, and have very little in the way of group buffs or other group utility.

My group already has a tank, why should I invite a Monk?
Several reasons. First, Monks do good DPS. You can generally expect roughly scout-level DPS from a Monk. A Monk won't fold like paper if they draw agro, though if a Monk is pulling agro from the tank too often, they should better time their attacks or at least switch to a more defensive stance. Monks have a good group buff which adds 10-15% haste (depending on level) to the entire group. Finally, Monks have a skill they can use on the tank to block damage for him. While all fighters have this same skill, Monks are the best at it because we have the highest chance to block. Just make sure that your tank cancels his buff - see below. And if the tank in your group decides to go to bed, the Monk can take over tanking so you don't have to stop to find a replacement tank.

What is the difference between a Monk and a Bruiser?
Bruisers generally have more offensively-oriented skills than Monks and a slightly higher DPS. We're a little more defensively focused.

Skills
What skills do Monks get?
Shirka has put together a great list.

What are our fluff skills?
You can buy the fluff skills from [Need NPC Name] in the Elddar grove. He is located in a ruined building along the creek to northeast of the Qeynos Harbor entrance.

Level 20: Silent Fist Kata: A series of animations to show off some of our martial arts moves

Level 40: Tiger Style: Shapeshifts the Monk into a tiger. Has no effect other than a visual change

Level 50: Radiance of the Silent Fist: Little glowing lights around the Monk.

What is our Bloodlines skill?
Devastation Fist - level 35. It costs about 15% power to use and, if it hits, will instantly kill any solo mob it hits. It has a 5 minute recast timer. If the swing hits, it also stifles the Monk for 12 seconds. You can move and attack, but cannot use any combat arts. This skill can also be used against some mobs in a heroic encounter, with the following restrictions: The encounter must contain four or more mobs; the encounter must not contain a named mob; the mob you target must not be ^, ^^, or ^^^.

Please note that this skill cannot currently be crafted. The only way to get Devastation Fist is to complete three or more quests for either faction camped outside the waterfall in Nektulous Forest. You will then be able to buy the NO TRADE apprentice 2 scroll.

I heard we get a cool skill for finishing Bloodlines?
Yes, all archetypes get an anti-vampire skill for finishing Bloodlines. It isn't very good - it's weak and can only be used on vampires.. Here are the stats on the Fighter one:

Corpsecrush Power: 49, Recast Time: 1 minute Duration: 24.1 seconds. Inflict 78-130 melee damage on target and decrease their str/agi by 34.

What skills should I upgrade to master/adept3?
Out of date right now! Will be updated soon. <strike>Fighters generally don't get good returns on upgrading to adept3 or master skills. Expect about a 10% increase by going from adept1 to adept3, and another 10% or so by upgrading to master. Most stances gain little or no improvement from upgrades, so avoid those.</strike>

<strike>Good picks: Everburning Flame/Fire, our haste buffs, are recommended upgrades. They give 6-12% more haste when upgraded. If you haven't taken many taunts as training choices (see below) but like to tank then the taunts are also recommended upgrades. Finally, the Wintry Talon, Rapid Strikes, and Swooping Dragon lines are our main damage skills and are good candidates for upgrades, though they are replaced quickly and that money might be better spent on weapons or armor. Upgrades to the Feign Death line also increase the chance that you'll successfully feign against higher level mobs.</strike>

<strike>If you are looking for a T4 (level 30-39) skill to upgrade, the two recommended skills are Biting Mantis and Quiet Purity. They are both high value skills that you will still be using at 50. While Quiet Purity doesn't upgrade much (compared to adept1, +1 to melee skills at adept3 and +2 at master and a small increase in resistances) you will still use it at 50</strike>.

What racial traditions should I choose?
None of the skills really mean much. The general recommendation is to go for passive skills, especially +hp and +power. I don't know of any activated skills that aren't considered worthless.

What are the Monk training choices?
Out of date now! Will be updated soon.

<strike>Level 10:</strike>

<strike>Lu'Sun's Spinning Kick An advanced form of Kick. As a bonus to Kick it inflicts additional damage.</strike>

<strike>Beslin's Boastful Posture An advanced form of Taunt. As a bonus to Taunt it increases the brawler's attack speed.</strike>

<strike>Velan's Taunting Cry An advanced form of Shout. As a bonus to Shout it increases more hate with the primary target. Highly recommended, as it also changes the recast time from 30s to 8s.</strike>

<strike>Jyson's Twirling Fists An advanced form of Assault. As a bonus to Assault it inflicts additional damage.</strike>

<strike>The overwhelming consensus is that Velan's Taunting Cry is by far the best choice here.</strike>

<strike>Level 20:</strike>

<strike>Phin's Open Palm Technique Advanced form of Martial Focus. It shares the same re-use timer and is of Adept II quality. As a bonus to Martial Focus it increases agility.</strike>

<strike>Lu'Sun's Stifling Dragon Advanced Form of Flying Kick. It shares the same re-use timer and is of Adept II quality. As a bonus to Flying Kick it briefly prevents the target from using ablities.</strike>

<strike>Bakindo's Lunging Tiger Advanced form of Power Strike. It shares the same re-use timer and is of Adept II quality. As a bonus to Power Strike it inflicts additional damage.</strike>

<strike>Beslin's Still Mind Advanced form of Feign Death. It shares the same re-use timer and is of Adept II quality. As a bonus to Feign Death it will work against higher lvl enemies.</strike>

<strike>There are a couple of good choices here. Many people like Phin's for the +14 agility. A few people like Beslin's, as it is on a seperate timer from normal FD. Personally, I am a very strong advocate of Lu'Sun's as it is still one of my most important attacks at 50. I will try to get the full examine info posted soon so you can make the most informed decision.</strike>

<strike>Level 30:</strike>

<strike>Goran's Slumbering Dragon An advanced form of Swooping Dragon. As a bonus to Swooping Dragon it deals ice damage instead of heat and briefly slows the target's movement speed and attack speed. However, it does not have a DOT.</strike>

<strike>Togahn's Infuriating Poke An advanced form of Taunting Slap. As a bonus to Taunting Slap it taunts an additional member of the same encounter.</strike>

<strike>So'Li's Flitting Sparrow An advanced form of Plodding Tortoise. As a bonus to Plodding Tortoise it interrupts casting.</strike>

<strike>Lu'Sun's Healing Touch An advanced form of Mend. As a bonus to Mend it cures lesser poison impairments.</strike>

<strike>Goran's is generally chosen by DPS Monks and Togahn's is generally chosen by tanking Monks.</strike>

<strike>Level 40:</strike>

<strike>Bakindo's Raging Tiger An advanced form of Stumbling Boar. As a bonus to Stumbling Boar it inflicts additional damage.</strike>

<strike>So'Li's Spitting Cobra An advanced form of Striking Cobra. As a bonus to Striking Cobra it deals poison damage instead of melee, interrupts casting, and inflicts additional poison damage over-time. Bugged; the DOT does not stack with the Swooping Dragon line.</strike>

<strike>Lu'Sun's Raging Soul An advanced form of Focus Energy. As a bonus to Focus Energy it can be used more frequently. It taunts as much as the level 50 taunt Agitate Spirit does at adept1.</strike>

<strike>Phin's Mountain Haven An advanced form of Martial Discipline. As a bonus to Martial Discipline it increases the Monk's agility.</strike>

<strike>I think people are mostly split between So'Li's and Lu'Sun's, with a few taking Phin's for the agility.</strike>

What the best way to get back up after using Feign Death?
Just press your sit/stand hotkey; I think it's 'x' by default. You can also right-click and cancel the Feign Death icon but hitting sit/stand is much quicker.

How does Martial Discipline work?
The Martial Discipline line gives you a chance to block/parry/riposte attacks for your target. They don't see an increase in their avoidance rating because YOU are blocking for them. Whenever your target would get hit, your Martial Discipline buff will give them an additional chance to avoid damage, using YOUR avoidance skill instead of theirs. We have the highest avoidance, so this can really be a lifesaver. When the target has an attack blocked for them, they see the message: A vermicious knid tries to pierce YOU, but Legond blocks!

I put Martial Discipline on the tank, but he says it never works!
A player can only have one of these blocking buffs active at once - if they are blocking for someone else, you can't block for them. Ask them to remove theirs so that you can put your buff back on them.

I have two identical imbued weapons, but they don't seem to proc all that often. Do both procs work?
Yes. However, when a weapon says that it procs 5% of the time, it's lying. The proc chance is scaled to a 3.0 second swing. If you're swinging at a 1.5 delay (after haste) then you proc 2.5% of the time.

We don't have conclusive evidence on the way weapon proc rate effects special attacks, but here's what I believe. Your chance to proc on a special attack is the same as if you took a normal swing. Because your proc rate per swing is lower when you have a faster weapon, or when you're dual wielding, you will proc more on special attacks when swinging a slow two handed weapon. We ran some tests a few months ago, documented here.

I'm tanking, and I keep losing agro!
First, make sure that you have Dragon Stance (or its upgrades) running if you're 28 or higher. They add a HUGE amount of agro generation to your attacks. Use your taunts whenever they're up, and upgrade them to adept1 or higher. If you can survive the extra damage, try switching to your offensive stance. I find that the offensive penalties on the defensive stance are severe enough that I can't hit the mob well.

Other suggestions: Try starting the fight with your group buff deactivated (Call of Arms, Wisdom of Zephyl, etc). Use it once the fight starts for some extra agro - that'll help a lot with multi-mob pulls. Or, if you need a bit more agro on the group of mobs, try using TF just before your AE. And finally, remember that agro control is everyone's job - if the wizard keeps pulling agro with AEs, let them know that they need to slow down or they get to tank em.

I'm doing DPS, and I keep getting agro!
First, make sure you didn't accidentally leave Dragon Stance up! Second, try to space out your attacks a bit - keep it a bit steadier and give the tank more time to build agro. Remember that agro control is your job too - if you're constantly pulling agro on mobs you don't want to tank, then reduce the damage you're doing. Try switching from your offensive stance to Spider Stance, if you're 44+. And maybe, if you're a higher level than the tank, try offering to tank for a bit to see how things go.

Equipment
What kind of armor can Monks wear?
Monks can wear light and very light armor.

What kind of weapons can a Monk use?
Fists, Mace, Staff, Hammer, Great Hammer, Thrown Weapon. We can use one-handed, two-handed, and dual wield weapons.

Is it better to DW or use 2h? What about 1h?
There is very little difference in damage whether using DW or 2H weapons. Weapon procs are scaled to the speed of your weapon and scaled based on DW or 2H, so that's not a factor, though see the caveat above about proc rates on special attacks. The 2H weapon will have lower stat bonuses than the DW weapons, but it is assumed that when dual weilding you will get hit by more ripostes. Both the fist weapons and the two-handed bo staves have very cool animations. If you're on a tight budget, go with a 2H weapon - it'll cost just as much but you only need to buy one of them.

Do not use a one handed weapon. You don't have anything to put in your offhand, you get lower stat bonuses than dual weilding, and you do less damage than either DW or 2H.

I'm a Monk, shouldn't I use bare fists?
No. Your fists are treated like a one handed weapon, and obviously have no stat bonuses. If you want the bare fist look, use some fistwrap weapons. They have the same graphic and combat animations as bare fists, but have the advantage of actually being good weapons.

What kind of fist weapons are available?
You have three choices: fistwraps, a cestii, or a cestus. Fistwraps have no graphic, do crushing damage, and have a 1.4 delay. A cestii (which should really be called a katar) has a single or triple handblade, does slash damage, and has a 2.0 delay. A cestus does piercing damage, has a 1.6 delay, and looks like... um... a salad bowl covered in spikes.

All three fist weapons do different damage types, but use your crush skill to determine how often they hit. This is so we don't have to raise up three different weapon skills. Please note that if you find a hand weapon that gives you either slashing or piercing skill raises you should /bug it with the exact weapon name so it can be fixed.

Weaponsmiths make the hand weapons, though the key resource is a leather strap. This can be made natively by tailors though anyone with the right Weaving skill book can make one as well. Happily, rare pelts are generally much cheaper than rare metals and rare woods, so the price of a rare crafted fist weapon should be relatively low.

Which are better, fast weapons or slow weapons?
This is a matter of personal preference. Personally, I feel that slow weapons are superior to fast weapons for two reasons. First, you get less riposte damage when using a slow weapon. Second, if you time your attacks well you can do more damage.

When you swing your weapon, you start a timer ticking. This timer is equal to the delay of your weapons. When the timer is up, you swing, and the timer starts over. However, if you're currently casting a combat art you will not swing until your art finishes. The timer does not start until you actually swing, so you might waste some of the speed of your weapons while casting. If you time your attacks so that you swing immediately after a combat art, then start using the next art immediately, you can maximize both your autoattack damage and your combat art damage. If your weapons are too fast then they aren't swinging at their full speed due to the time wasted casting a combat art. If your weapons are too slow, you either have to wait too long after finishing an art, or you start using the next art before you swing and waste a lot of delay time while casting the next one. This isn't as important as it used to be, because combat arts cast twice as fast as they used to, but it's still a theoretical advantage

But if you don't care about squeezing out every last bit of damage then just use whatever weapons you think are cool. There really isn't enough of a difference to spend much time worrying about - and the animations on fist weapons rock.

Is there a haste cap?
Yes - haste caps at 100%. We can get very close to the cap with just our self buffs and our offensive stance.

Is there a delay cap?
I don't know. I've heard 0.8 and 0.6 mentioned before. With the 100% haste cap, though, you're not really going to need to worry about this much.

How do I get that awesome armor in the dojo in the grove?
Don't hold your breath. There is one known item which gives that look, the Ashen Disciple Gi, usuable at 52 or so. I think it comes as a drop from killing the Ashen monks in Pillars of Flame, but there aren't many Monks willing to test that for themselves

What armor should I look for at 30-40?
This advice comes courtesy of Morrolan V:

I bought player-made etched (non-rare), then to Emerald Hide (Zek quested, usable at 35), then to Enchanted Thicket Woven (drops from Lamias in EL, usable at 3. Continued to wear the Emerald occasionally when tanking for a couple of levels, as it has much more mitigation than the Thicket stuff. Still have never seen a set of armor short of raid drop that has better stats than the Thicket, though. I did wear the Chainweave Gi until 32.

Also, if you have a high threshold for boredom you might want to try camping Huuptics on the Feerrott beach. They have a rediculously rare drop "tattered robe" which starts an easy quest for the Robe of the Invoker. This robe has 7/tick in-combat power regen and is fantastic for use when playing DPS, but it is very rare and the mobs start turning grey at 41.

What armor should I look for at 40-50?
Thicket woven armor will treat you well for a few levels. After that, consider wearing pristine crafted armor or a mishmash of drops until you can buy or harvest enough Superb pels and Augmented items to make a set of Augmented leather, the 40-50 rare crafted armor.

Quests
Where does the Monk armor quest start?
A little halfling named Selwyn in South Qeynos. She is under the big oak tree just south of the gate to North Qeynos.

What heritage quests are good for a Monk?
The Fishbone Earring, Flowing Black Silk Sash, and Legendary Journeyman's Boots are three good pieces of armor you'll wear for a long time. Dwarven Work Boots are pretty good, but the quest is somewhat painful and you'll replace them by your mid 30s. The Hierophant's Crook is also a good weapon, and is the only weapon from a heritage quest that is good for a Monk to use. The Lightstone heritage quest is pretty good at low levels, but it's hard for Qeynos-based characters to do because it takes place in the Commonlands. The Bag of Sewn Evil Eyes is a great 20 slot bag. The Manastone is also useful.

For high-end quests, the Golden Efreeti boots are great, and the Crown of King Tranix is good to use when you aren't tanking but is so painful to get that most people skip it.

Class Mechanics
What priest makes the best healer for a Monk?
A well-played one. All of them work well; they all have their advantages and disadvantages. If you're looking for a duo partner any of them will keep you healed without a problem. My personal favorite duo partner is a Fury.

Which stats should I focus on as a Monk?
Strength, Stamina, and Agility. Wisdom is also valuable for resists, but this is generally less important than the other stats. There are two schools of thought on this topic: balance out all your stats, or take agility or strength as high as possible. The +agility people focus on getting their avoidance as high as possible. The +strength people just want to do damage, so they maximize it. The balanced group has two arguments: that neither +agility isn't that big a benefit anymore, and that because stats have less meaning at high levels you can get the biggest overall improvement by balancing them out. Personally, I just get the best gear I can find and don't focus on the specific stat bonuses on any of them.

How does Deflection work?
Deflection gives you a chance to block an attack. At one point, Monk deflection was described as "the same as having a Round Shield equipped", though we block much better than even a tower shield. Deflection and Parry now work on all attackers, even if they're standing behind you, so there's no longer any need to line em all up in front of you.

Miscellaneous Questions
How do I report bugs in the Monk class?
First, be sure to submit an in-game bug report by using /bug. Second, you can also add your bug to the Monk bug thread at http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=6&message.id=16720.

Where can I find more information?
The Monk forum on the official EQ2 forums is a great resource for questions and conversation.

In game, you can join the cross-server Monk channel by typing "/joinchannel crushbone.allmonks". Please note that /whochannel does not work correctly on cross-server channels, so it's less empty than it might look. There are generally quite a few folks there even if they aren't constantly chattering. Stoic tranquility and all, you know.

© 2005 bonesbro. This is great work, I was considering making a monk as a distraction from my wizard and Palladin. This will help me immensely in starting the new character.

the "Monk combat art and training choice progression" link does not work anymore. Is there any way that that can be fixed. It was very helpful to see a progression of spell lines and what was comming next and when.

Thanks

They got the equivalent block% factor into deflection back then. Since the combat upgrade tho, I suspect it has long been amended and reworked.

Any guestimate on when you'll have the FAQ revised after DOF & the combat balance hit? I rely on the FAQ and I suspect lots of others do as well...

I'll probably make a few edits right away but some things might take me a while, because we need to learn how things work again

So if bruisers deal more dmg and tank mobs just as well as monk... What's the point in being a monk? Because your AE taunt is different?

Considering that monks an bruisers are designed as a solo class, this is a very bunk short end of the stick that monks get shafted by.

My short response would be "if youthing brusiers are better suited to your play style, then by all means play one." I'll ignore the whole "solo class" thing, because the game is designed so every class should be able to solo (though not all equally)

Though i'd mention a racial tradition that is not a perm boost but very good, not all that priceless to monk though =) Ratongas get a 3 min duration stealth with 30 min recast especially with wind walk that is save your power if needed and is the best way to save money used on chameleons with other fighters and priests that usually get no stealth just my thoughs =) staff

I have a request for an item to be added to the FAQ, as this is a question that comes up all the time for Tailors making gear for monks: which ranged weapon holder to make for you? I am not a monk and so I have no clue what to do when one of you guys comes to me with a rare pelt and asks for a thrown weapon bag. Few know which one he or she needs. I am asked for "the one that holds xxx" or worse yet "whatever is easier to make." Most of the item descriptions I have access to give no clue as to what the thing will hold and they are all made exactly the same way with exactly the same ingredients. I am refering to the sheath, bandolier, etc not the quiver or sack.
