View Full Version : Monk tradeoff?

I've developed an interesting theory lately that I'd like to throw out there for others to tear down. One common conception that is thrown at Monks when we talk about tanking is that the Monk class supposedly trades off some Defense for DPS. Some players of other classes (Guardians in particular) argue that if Monks can Tank (in this case, take damage) as well as plate classes then the plate classes should have a similar DPS to the Monk.I've been playing up a Berzerker recently and I've come up with a different theory. Monks don't trade off Defense for higher DPS, they trade off <i>Taunts</i> for DPS. It seems to me that Guardians and Berzerkers (I don't know about Paladins and Shadow Knights; haven't even looked at 'em) have more direct and indirect Taunt lines than the Monk. This would make sense to me: the plate classes would manage aggro with Combat Arts, the Monk and Bruiser would manage aggro with a few Arts and with damage. What do you think? It would make a nice counter to the, "You're DPS so you're not a Tank," line.

<DIV>I think its all hype anyway, guardians when dual wielding and off tanking can do good damage when they try, they just hardly are ever in a MA/OT role so good parses of their damage isn't available unless solo.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Besides if it came out they could do almost as good as damage as zerkers then their whole defense on why they should be such good tanks would go down the drain.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I mean lets look at it:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Monks/Bruisers = comparable DPS</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>SK/Pally = comparaable DPS</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>but supposedly</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>zerker > guardian DPS</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Hmm.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Why would SoE do that?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I always see guardians say "<EM>well monks/zerkers/bruisers get DPS" </EM>and "<EM>pally's get heals"</EM> when they defend being the supposed "best" MT in EQ2.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I for one think they are full of it.</DIV>

Funny you posted this, i just posted an hour ago in Guardian forum asking what their dps tends to be. When I'm tanking i do in between 125-200, depending on what skills I use and what lands.I remember a month ago a 48 guardian friend I grouped with alot was doing ~150 dps while tanking, but that was well, a month ago and alot has changed since.

I would actually take a look at the SK/Pal spells, I get outdamaged by some SKs I know all the time. Pallies get heals, where SKs get pets and dots and lifetaps, Pallies get lay on hands SKs get harm touch, the diference in damage between the two is substantial.

to OP, i think that the dps/taunt tradeoff is definitely there, and agree. I have thought the same for some time. making sure i use my highest hitting skills and HOs while tanking.I dont agree with your last line. I think any class can tank, so long as they can do the following:1) stay alive2) hold aggrothe first is preferable, the second is compulsory.
