A bud of mine who has SEVERAL lvl 70 characters told me that Berserkers sucked and that nobody, later on at higher lvls, will wanna group with me. Reasons are that Berserkers aren't fully tanks and aren't fully a damage dealer. We will need to be healed constantly and do little damage to heroics. Is this true? Should i become a Guardian instead? Right now I am lvl 16 - should I waste anymore time? I am truly enjoying this character so far, but if its true, I will become a better tank class. Please give me your info. Thanks in advance!!

thats absolutely not true.berserkers ARE full tanks, and do little damage. (although they can also reach some nice dps values with the right AA choices and equipment)maybe your buddy was talking about monks... those are neither full damagedealers nor real tanks...

This is plain BS - take that from somebody else with several Lvl 70s - including a Zerker. Berserkers tank just fine - up to level cap at 70 and on through raiding content. They also have a lot more solo value than Guards and can dish out ok damage when needed. Every plate tank needs constant healing when tanking group content of appropriate level or stronger. The only folks not needing constant healing are leather tanks like monk and bruiser and they DO have problems getting groups at higher levels. They get no damage at all for a minute and then suddenly die due to spike damage, and are not really DDs either...

I am currently setup as a DPS tank - 8 Str and the rest in Wis line 4/8/8 (with 12 AP left to get). in group 25% of the time I hit 100% haste and 100% DPS. I tank in offensive stance and am in mastercrafted gear. The only zones I have had trouble tanking this way are HOF and Nek3 (and Nizara but have not been there yet). when a zerker hits 50 the really good CA come out: Devastation, open wounds, juggernaught.

And we can solo just fine - not as well as some pet classes but...

Your buddy doesn't know jack. Zerkers are true tanks, just as much as a Guardian. All the way up to orange con even a Paladin can hold their own, though against orange con raid mobs, it gets tricky :smileyvery-happy: Guards and Zerkers are always called upon to MT for groups and raids. Besides, if you play your class well and become an outstanding tank, people will most certianly want to group with you because there seems to be this rampant wave of sucky [Removed for Content] tank epidemic going around.

lol,

this looks like a comment of other tanks who fear the nasty competetion a zerk can bring on.

I have a pretty specced zerk. I solo ^^^ heroics lvl70 and up. For groups they pick a zerk. why? They tank pretty much as good as a guardian, they hold aggro like no-one else (except pally's with amends maybe), and they have very good dps on top of that.

I am also MT and i tank T7 raid 3 times a week. I don't hear anybody complaining that a zerk is MTing our raids.

Trust me zerkers are VERY good tanks and i wouldn't want to trade it in for any other tank...

i have a lvl 70 paladin, and a lvl 40 zerker on vox... i can tell you i wish i woulda rolled the zrker first... on a pvp server i think the zrker has alt more burst dps than a paladin or gaurdian. and the mitigation buff is , well, Great..

this is looking at the pvp aspect : a beserker has great dps for a tank, more mitigaton at the same tier as a paladin with equal gear, and the bow and arrow is great for pvp, and all ca's are castable while moving.. the paladin will outlast a beserker because the paladins can group heal, single target heal, and have celestial touch which is full target heal with a long recast timer. so if you can make the fight last longer with a paladin the paladin will own in pvp.. paladins dont do alot of burst dps, but they do a good amount of dps over time...

in pve/raiding... i really like my paladin as a main assist, seems what paladins are made for.. multiple target raid encounters, and warding and spot healing the main tank group, and the in-combat rez is the bomb.. alot of guilds dont like a paladin on a raid, but i can tell you from experience, a paladin doesnt do as much dps as a beserker, but they back a zerker/gaurdian main tank very well, it depends greatly on how you spend your aa's on a paladin.. as a paladin you have alot more versatility... i spent my aa's in melee crits, spell crits, and heal crits, and haste.. in pve he does his job pretty good.. in pvp my paladin also is awesome as long as hes in a group with a beserker or gaurdian..

From what ive noticed as playing a paladin and a beserker, now remember this is a lvl 70 paladin and a lvl 38 beserker... soloing is far faster with a beserker, a paladin can kill even conned stuff just as well but it takes a tad longer, same goes here if a paladin drags the fight out he will win.. in a group setting a paladin has to worry more about the group as a whole than himself, a beserker just conscentrates on the target and dealing damage to it, so it can get boring, you stay alot more busy playing a paladin which is why i like a paladin... but i like playing the beserker as far as leveling him because he can blow through stuff alot faster...

so basicly its what you like better, if you like to stay focused and conscentrate on a full group alot when you play, roll a paladin, if you like dealing dps and just worrying about the encounter in front of you roll a zerker,, the difference is night and day... you might want to try both, roll a beserker and a paladin, take the paladin to lvl30, then roll the beserker and take him to lvl30.. both are good toons, and totally different.. i love both my paladin and beserker...

i'm stacking most my AA's in the stamina line with my beserker..hard to beat that aa line, with my paladin i had to seperate into three different lines to maximaze his effectivness, str for haste, sta for melee crits and + to hit points, int for spell crits and heal crits...

i also dont think my paladin hold aggro as well as a beserker.. well atleast you have to work harder to hold the aggro with a paladin..

its also going to boil down to if your in a guild that is loaded with beserker and gaurdians.. some guilds see a paladin as a wasted spot in raids that could be filled with a more robust toon, some see the paladins as a good main tank assist, and some have paladins that main tank.. if your in a guild ,talk with the leaders and see what they would rather have. if your going to roll mainly with friends check what class's they are playing, if there are 2 tank class's already, say a gaurdian and a zerker, roll a paladin... a paladin can heal good up to around the mid 30's after that you need a dedicated healer.. its gonna be a matter of choice and how your playing the game..

Roll both types and see which you like best.. then go from there.. ive seen beserkers tank epics great... the paladins ive seen tank dont hold aggro as well, but a paladin that is played good can and will save raids, but they dont get the glory nearly as much..

i'm sorry for the long post, just giving you some insight...and possibly another plate tank class to consider...

a paladin is funner to play and alot more versatile and will compliment a dedicated tank better, but the beserker is stronger dps wise!

Message Edited by ChopStix on 09-16-2006 07:48 AM

All you guys are awesome for responding to my post so quickly! I appreciate all of your insight! I DO have a paladin also, and a necro, guardian, shadowknight, and warlock - all of which are lvl 14 or above (just trying to find who I like playing better). I play many mmo's and I ALWAYS play a tank, besides warcraft of which I am a warlock, so I know tanking pretty well and I like my tanking job! So when my online friend said that to me, I was seriously thinking of playing a different class. But after reading all these post, I can clearly say : " FUDGE THAT !". Thanks for the tips all!!!!! Later all!!

I will have to admit that in the beginning I was seriously reconsidering my choice of berserker. There were times in the game when I was annoyed, like when I was killed by a 28^^^ as a 38. However, once you get further into the game, upgrade your equipment, get better weapons, and get out of the first 45 levels you really start to love your berserker. Berserkers are suppose to be the hard-core DPS tanks and in the beginning they are just another Guard. But by the end they have the potiential to be one of the best classes in the game in certain situations. My best advise to a young berserker searching for their "bread and butter":

AE attacks - tell those mez classes to bug off! It's berserker rage time!

[expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] straight about the AEOs

A RLF was telling me that that i am a loose cannon and that i "scare" people by pulling multiple mobs. Duh - that is what zerkers do -multiple mob DPS.

There are situtaions where i am careful - like HOF and Nizara (If I every get to go there) - but in Nest with guildies and a lvl 70 healer - pull the whole room and a big-ole bird Bar-B-Que.

What makes things even more fun is SOE lifting the limit on the number of encounters that AEOs do damage too (limit was 5). see above. The last room in Nest before climbing up (after named mobs dead) I had 8 encounters on me (16 ^^ green mobs). Pop off Open Wounds, Destruction and then AEO. after have the mobs gone I hit Juggernaught too and watch the orange numbers fly.

Zerkers dont really grow up until after lvl 50.

I assure you, zerkers suck.

haha! jk of course. That is why I can't be bothered with playing any alts. I'd rather play solo, or even sit in efp doing nothing, rather than be bothered with any other class. Not that I haven't tried it - I've got a few classes up to about level 30, and played some higher level classes that belong to friends...still can't find the fun I have with my zerker.

And I'm not saying you'll have the same fun I do. It's definetly not for everyone. But I think if you even asked people that DO NOT play a zerker, I doubt they would tell you that they suck. It may not be the best for everyone, but 99% will agree the class does not suck. And 99% would also agree that your bud sucks for saying so.

Edit: Like any other class though, this could all change with a future nerf(s).

Message Edited by FightGame on 09-21-2006 02:54 PM
