View Full Version : How Important are Resists?
I made a berzerker and have been playing him mainly as the MT in a group. He's L32 currently outfitted in nearly all feysteel armor and my resists are showing to be around 10% when solo and around 35%ish when grouped.I don't seem to have a problem with taking damage but am curious if I should snag up one of the crafted resist jewelery pieces or just stick with stats and boost up my hps/power. I realize with raiding I'd want higher resists, but as a group tank, will I really be seeing a lot of casters? and if so, when should I start looking to boost my resists?

for most encounters you'll see down the road, resists are key, you can make up a nice group with a conj or sk/pally to get you mit up.

In the mid 20's I'm starting to encounter mobs that can do quite a chunk of damage with spells. Especially named in groups with other spell casters. If you're really on the money while playing you can interrupt them continuously by using the single target taunt, a damage/focus debuff that also interrupts, and using the AoE attack that kd's (shield users get one more but who uses a shield??). But most often it's hard to keep hate while interrupting mobs. I don't particularly focus on resist gear at this time yet, but I'm starting to consider it.

Although it wasn't with a zerker, my first lesson of resists was after I was soloing Varsoon and his 'ladyfriend' as a L44 swashy. Using offensive stance for DPS and interrupts I was taking too much damage. In defensive stance I would win most times, using a good poison and a heal potion. Then I got ACT and parsed Varsoon. A big chunk of his damage was heat. I had like 12% heat mitigation. A quick refit later, I had 4 new jewelry/ranged slot items with +heat to swap in, and I could sit at over 50% heat mit, with a reduction in other stats. But the difference was night and day, and I was basically winning with over half health every time, never any real risk at all.So I took that lesson over to my L70 pally, and I now make a note of damage that nameds in instances do, and where appropriate swap in armour here and there. There are some jewelry items with +1000 resists on them, many with +800 or so. Against the right mobs they help a lot Those Light Chitin Rings are nice not only for phys mit, but across the board spell mit as well.Ultimately it's down to how close the fight is. If you're pushing the envelope so to speak, it can be very useful to pay careful attention to resists. In general situations, it probably doesn't matter.

A lot of the "old timer" players will say it doesn't matter in the lower levels, because in our experience we didn't have a problem with them.

However, we played in a pre-LU13 era, where NPC classes weren't as greatly defined (not as wide a variance in damage types), as well as a completely different itemization. Back then, EVERYTHING had resists. Every piece of armor had some kind of stat you didn't need and a bunch of resists.. for example, all pants had Int and Str, and i think it was poison and disease resists. Barring a few unique drops, you were always geared more as a well rounded statted character, than a focused min/max character. Items that provided different stats for a slot were sought after to min max in that period.

Nowadays we have to contend with Mage NPCs nuking the crap out of us with the same spells as your wizard or warlock friend, as well as running around with only +Ability gear since they've revamped everything to be like tier 7 (stats on seperate gear, unless it's legendary or fabled).

So yeah.. you still want to focus on mitigation as much as possible.. but don't neglect resists completely. It would be a good idea to get at least a few resist items made from a jeweler to protect yourself at least a little against key encounters.

I play on a PvP server and I can tell you that in pvp there is as much benefit from certian resists as there is for mitigation. I play a pally in my low 30's and have very good mit but have also spent the time and thought on uping my resists. disease, poison, fire and cold, being the really important ones when fighting Freeps. In a pve environment, it's not nearly as important when fighting the general random mob.Dethenl O'Bradain 32 Paladin of Sanctuary on Venekor
