I just completed the "training is a shield" quest today hoping to receive my new kite shield version of the SBS. What I received was the round buckler versio. I had thought that as of live update 13 (i believe), All fighter archtypes would receive the kite version. Is this not the case? I went to shady swashbuckler to see if he had it, but he didn't seem to. Just had the one I'm wearing (the 630 shield factor one) and the lighter version for the priest and scouts. Do I actually have the kite shield even though the graphic is that of a buckler? Does that kite shield actually look like a kite shield? What am I missing here? Thanks in advance for the help

Not sure about the rest, but the graphic is the same.

You have received the correct shield for your class because, as you said, after LU13 every class (other than a mage) receives their optimum useable version of the shield. The graphic is no different between the Buckler and the Kite versions. You're not missing anything

FYI, a good way to tell is by examining it. You can go by which classes can USE it... e.g. if you're examining the Kite shield version, you should see something like:

Warrior (40)

Crusader (40)

Since only plate tanks can use 'large' (Kite) shields. Whereas examining the Buckler version you'll see something like

Scout (40)

Priest (40)

Warrior (40)

Crusader (40)

indicating that that would be the 'smaller' version.

You could probably have also inferred that you had the larger shield if you compared the two shield factors, but I can understand that it still would be confusing.

A while ago, when I got my SBS, equipment was still labelled by the appropriate skill necessary to USE it, e.g. Kite Shield (200) - instead of the classes that can use it. Personally I thought that was a better way of representing things, because there was no ambiguity.
