Can anyone explain the deferance between "Defence" and "Parry" ? (both make your total avoidance higher - but what each do exactly? )

Parry* - Uses Parry Skill and the check is contested versus Mob Rating (Heroic, Epic etc.), Difficulty (Green, Yellow, Red etc.) and Mob's special skills (Attack Bonus etc.)2. Block - Uses Shield's Protection Factor and the check is versus the Mob Level3. Dodge (Displayed as: Mob misses) - Uses Defense Skill and the check is contested versus Mob Rating (Heroic, Epic etc.), Difficulty (Green, Yellow, Red etc.) and Mob's special skills (Attack Bonus etc.)AGI gives boni to Defense (and Parry?)Since you can not dodge a blow you have parried before (or blocked), the avoidance is not the sum of the individual avoidance values.*(Dev: A successful Parry can turn into a Riposte BUT some stated they think Parry and Riposte arent related)

I think they lose block for it. If they can't get out of their pajamas for a raid, how can they expect me to keep track of these things? :p

Has a dev ever confirmed the various scaling issues, particularly in terms of mob type (solo, heroic, epic) or the order in which the various avoidance components are applied? (order doesn't REALLY matter, I'm just curious, and it would make comparing the parse with expected values easier) I know they have said that certain epics (and probably names) used to (pre EoF) get to hit modifiers to get past certain parts of the avoidance. Is that still true? If so, for what parts of the avoidance?

Snorm -- 70 Guard

Message Edited by Snorm on 01-10-2007 01:33 PM

Pretty sure that block is uncontested.

Defense and Agility get lumped into one type of avoidance, called "Base".

Can you explain to me what is meant by Block being "uncontested"? (which, btw, I'm pretty sure it is... I've read it in the monk forums how monks are upset that they got the deflection skill as a trade for block when shields were taken away from them and deflection is not uncontested). I know I don't block 100% of blows, so I don't understand what part of it is "uncontested".

Thanks in advance.

It means, if you have a 20% to block will be 20% no matter what lv of the mob you fighting, even if it is orange. If your base defense says 23% against a lv 70 mov, once you fight a lv 75 mob that 23% will not be 23 anymore, but a lot less.Thats why block is the most important skill we have in terms of tanking, and thats why you should invest in 1% block adorments

Actually, uncontested means it doesn't matter what skill the mob has. Level still counts.

If you have 20% block against a triple down arrow lvl 70 mob, then you'll have 20% block against an Epic x4 lvl 70 mob. You'll still scale down against a lvl 75 mob (epic or otherwise).

Mobs get higher and higher tohit bonuses the higher "quality" they are. Think of it as having more and more bonus to +crushing, etc, vs your avoidance skills.

The issue with deflection is that only a portion of it is uncontested, and based on the quality of defensive stance (and requires defensive stance). Block works all the time, any time, tower shield or buckler, defensive or offensive. Deflection requires having Defensive stance turned on (harder to hold aggro in defensive stance depending on the encounter), and is set to 12% max at master 1 quality (fabled ROUND shield at best).
