View Full Version : Does Starting Race Really Matter?
<DIV>Hi all,</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Just started up a Guardian and went with Fae due to playing in Faydark and I run a second account healer as a Fae. I love the free fall they get it just makes things so much easier. Well my question is based on this race choice. It know Str and Sta of Fae is low but I thought I could raise those stats as I level. I will say my low level 6 Guard Fae sure takes a beating and doesnt seem to put out much damage compared to a Fae Monk I made at same level. In the long run will it really matter the race you choose?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>THanks....</DIV>

As your adventurer level increases, race matters less and less. In exact same gear, some races will perform better than others by a slight bit. To that end, it matters only as much as you want it to. You may not be an ideal race but may have better gear than someone else. There is room for flexibility. As a rule, I recommend against smaller races for tanks. You're a little harder to see and it is harder to see what's going on around you. The chances of you staring at crothces and arses is high as a shortie. Even as a max height dwarf I find this to be annoying. I've been using my guardian fun spell "Form of the Rook" alot lately. It makes you appear as a very big, black golem or I use an ogre eye charm. Still a hassle but I can see better and get less complaints from others. I think that's the only caveat worth mentioning playing a shortie.<div></div>

Its probably more versatile if you are small because of 'Form of the Rook' which is the largest character model as far as I know. Being small sometimes is pretty useful especially for pvp.<p>Message Edited by Docimodo on <span class=date_text>12-20-2006</span> <span class=time_text>05:41 AM</span>

<DIV>My main is a gaurdian. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I agree with first reply.. Being big is important only becasue iti s easier to see me when I have lots of mobs on me.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>and I can loook around and see everything that is arond me.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>But I am a big fat slow barbarian and out of battle it sucks how slow I am. but I am meat shield not supposed to be a runner.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I have gnome illusions cause I love how I look as one. for fun only. I wonder where the fay illusion is. That may be cool too.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>You do have that illution fun spell so as long you have that on when you are tanking multiple encounters. you be ok</DIV>

You do "feel" slower as a large race, but it's a visual trick. You move at the same speed as anyone else. Try a foot race without any speed bonuses versus a really short race to check. The reason it looks like you are moving slower when you're a big race is that your legs are longer and you're covering a bit more ground. You don't need to pump those legs as fast. A short race conversely pumps their legs alot in the run animation so it "feels" like you are moving faster. Really you're just covering less distance per stride. In the end, you both cover the same amount of ground in the same amount of time. It's just your eyes playing tricks on you. All sizes run at the same base speed. The only thing that will change your run speed is being encumbered, using a SoW totem, JBoots, run song, etc.<div></div>

<DIV>Starting stats do not matter once you level a little, and size can be fixed.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>What does matter however is the racial traits you get as you level up. Those could make a difference.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Sony has promised to redo the racial traits for all races, so it is impossible to say which will be better at the moment.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

Play whatever race you like. I'm a ratonga guardian, and I love me! <span>:smileyvery-happy:</span>starting stats matter very very little at higher levels. Size is no issue whatsoever with our funspell as said above.<div></div>

Yes racial traits could be a big thing after they change them all

I have always thought that ratongas had a small advantage due to their avoidance traits and agi backbone. As for size, it has caused me trouble, that is why I have to always be in rock form when I am raiding. Otherwise, I love the ratty guardian.<div></div>

Not sure whether they still have it on the website, but in the beginning, you had races with profession choices they are suited best for...Maybe the racial trait rework will give the "Tank Races" (Ogre, Troll, Barbarian - maybe Dwarf) some extra bonus. As it is now, they have no real effect... And your race choice neither.I chose my class based on 2 facts:- Barbarian was the best "starter" tank race Qeynos had to offer (I didn't want to "waste" time with betrayal)- I loved (and still do) the Barbarian lookThe latter is for me the most important part of race choice... If you play in 3rd person view like I do, you have to watch at your char for 70 Levels, 100 AA's, hours of crafting and then the immense timesink called raiding <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /><div></div>
<P>Thanks everyone for the input. I love the Glide and free fall of the Fae and with a Fae Fury or other healer in tow it is so nice to just jump and fall to move. I will see how the Fae goes. </P> <P>Thanks again</P>
<DIV>I play the largest Ogre there is. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I find it a Huge advantage on a PvP server. (Pun intended.) </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>My group stays near me and players on the other team have a hell of a time clicking them...</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>throw in the taunts for a truley frustrating PvP fight for the bad guys. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>/grin...</DIV> <DIV> </DIV>
