Well im returning to eq2 after a long while, im making a new character and ive come down to either a Guardian, or berserker.

I really am more interested in a guardian, because in all games ive played ive loved the idea of a knight in the frontlines taking dmg and such, but my question is how are guardians these days in eq2

Are they fun for someone coming back to the game? Or even a noob?

Do groups want a guardian? Are guardians designed well *hopfully the best* for tanking and such?

If I cant get a group, are blues soloable at a fair speed? Can I solo simple 1-3 step quest?

And last, are their skills entertaing/tactical and require a little thinking to use them right?

edit: Oh also, it seems like guardians are still favored raid tanks...but what about just normal lvling/quest groups? I honestly am no major raider, and it will be maybe a year or so till im even high enough for that.

Message Edited by Clailmebe on 10-05-2006 02:38 PM

Guardian - Defensive tank

Zerker - Offensive tank

Both if gear appropriately, can tank stuff in all levels of game.

If you are starting a guild or run a guild and are a Guardian/Zerker, then you will likely get be the MT. Underwise good luck being an MT.

If solo/group for the most part, zerker may be better than guardian due to higher DPS.

Ya i kno the difference between the two *tho i dont know how wide that diffrence is =/*

I really couldnt start a guild if i wanted to *again lack of time*

Also I really dont have to be the mt in every group im in, i mean id like to but id be glad enough just to get into a group

Are groups mostly based around guilds now? I mean for normal xping/quest and such..even at 30 and below? And if I dont have a guild does that mean it will be rare/less likely i get in a group once a day or so?

For normal grouping, questing, and soloing, zerkers are better imho. Their dps is higher (especially on multiple target encounters) while still being able to tank very well.

For the really hard content (tough names, orange con mobs, and raids), guardians are better by a small margin.

This is assuming equal equipment of course, as a well geared zerker is a better tank than an average geared guardian.

Which can get old.... In all the time I've played, in terms of standard groups anyway, I can count the number of times I wasn't the tank on one hand. And tanks can't count past ... what is it that comes after 2?

Until you get really well geared (at which point the grouping content becomes trivial anyway) your DPS just flat sucks. Buckler reversal helps a bit, but since they have fixed the proc rate, that's not off the charts either. That doesn't really matter until your in T7 anyway....

Point is, the guard class rocks. I've loved playing mine from day one, through DoF (when everyone said we were just flat broke), through now. But you are a very one trick pony.

In terms of pick up groups, it's been said just about everywhere that everyone from guards through brigands can tank heroic content to an acceptable level. I personally never had major problems getting pick up groups together as a guard, but your milage may vary.

Snorm -- 70 Guard

Seems most of your points haven't actually been answered, so....

Clailmebe wrote:

1. Are they fun for someone coming back to the game? Groups have never told me that they didn't want a guard there

2+1. Blue ^^^ heroics... well I dont' generally see how far I can push soloing, but not quickly in any event. Most green ^^^'s are fine ATM even at 70. But we certainly are not the best soloing class in the game.

2+2. I think alot of things become easier for a Guardian once they have a healthy amount of AA points under their belt. It's my opinion that until a Guardian has quite a few AAs it is easier to play a Beserker. At level 70 I don't think the difference between the two is so big that one sucks while the other is amazing. Either can do very well. I have seen both classes outperform the other. That leads me to believe both are viable choices. Gear, and the person playing the toon, make a difference too.
