This is my first time using a Guardian, previously I've been either Fury or Paladin.

I know with the Paladin the Kite Shield was way better than the others for fighting.

Is the Kite Shield best for Guardian?

tower shield unless your going buckler spec. In which case buckler for the majority of the time and tower shield for some of the time.

I use a buckler because of my achievement spec, however this thread made me think of something else. Is the only difference in shield types the amount of mitigation? Or does one shield type have a better chance of blocking than another, as you would expect in reality from the literal size difference between a tower shield and buckler. Obviously there are instances which require a specific type such as the stamina spec line (buckler) and tower of stone (tower).

Of course it is my opinion that you should be able to use a buckler with a 2 hand weapon as well, as you would be able to in reality.

If you don't have the STA AA line, then it doesn't matter, just use the best one you can find by basis of stat, not type. You can instantly switch out a Tower Shield for ToS, it's extremely easy. If you take the buckler line get used to doing this, as a Guardian that doesn't use ToS is no Guardian to me. :smileywink:

The best shield for any tank is a cloth caster. They take 1 free hit for you . It's too bad they only have 1 good use in them though. They're like a Tower of Stone that only blocks 1 hit and then self destructs .

One thing warriors in any game should remember is our performance (in ANY game) always depends on our gear. Not all gear is ever BEST for all given situaions. Being a guaridan means you soak damage and if you have the STA AA line you can dish out decent damage due to the 76% double-attack proc on auto attacks. So take a look at your resists and then try and find multiple shields that have decent different resists so you can swap out gear as needed. But to help narrow your search stick with Tower shields and Bucklers. Tower Shields are needed for one of the most valuable CAs we have, Tower of Stone. It lets your shield absorb damage 3 times but it also damages you shield. So having multiple tower shields depending on how long you are away from a mender helps.

I also HIGHLY recomend the STA AA line which requires you to use a bucker. It's an unbelievable asset to us guardians. So having bucker on most of the time and switching to tower shields as needed will make you a very good tank. Gear swaping is a NEED for us guards to do our job well. :smileyhappy:

I've been playing my monk and necro for a while now because I got fed up with my guardian. However a few weeks ago I picked him up, got him from 29 to 32 and had some MC armor made and a new MC weapon.I previously had the older Fir Tower Shield, since I didn't want to make one I found a standard tower shield with better stats (old Fir one had wis and int) but the same numbers (420 I think). However I didn't really like the way this one looked so I picked up a feysteel kite shield. When I equipped it my mitigation went from 18 to 34%... that's odd, so I put the other tower shield on and the same thing happend. The only difference is about 80 pts (the feysteel kite is like 504 or something) but it's lighter than the tower... are the 80 pts giving me that much difference or is it that you can move easier with a smaller shield?Never really thought about it before so I thought I would ask.Marb

Items weight is purely there for carrying capacity reasons, and shield class (round, kite, tower, etc.) is only there to determine what classes will not be able to use the shield. (As far as mechanics go)

Until you maxed out your STA line (4 5 8 8 or something) i would use always the tower shields. When you hit lvl 58, allways carry a few "trash towershields" with you for the "Tower of Stone" spell.

Pulling harder enemies would be like this: Command, Tower of Stone --- Pull --- 3 Hits on your Tower Shield, then switching to the Buckler for more DPS.

Use both Shild types... and let the poor knights their Kite Shields ... hrhr

Losing ~4% avoidance for double DPS is fine by me- And if I'm not going to die with what that 4% avoidance actually equals out to with to-hit bonuses, then all the better. Oh, and I can also out dps 2H/DW if I go DPS too. Offtank? NP, don't even gotta switch gear. Simply put? I'm not getting hit harder, but do double my dps. I don't know I wouldn't take it. Try it out.

Super Du wrote:
oh yea?

i never bothered with stamina line...

i did agility for the 10 second immunity which is great.

but doing stamina and resorting to bucklers instead of towers and kites during raids just doesn't make sence to me since you sacrifice the most important asset of all...
