Hello,

What is the best way to handle a group of two mobs or more with one of them that taunts? My way seems to put all my efforts to attack the mob that taunted me.

I kill mobs in that order:

Mages, Priests, Scouts, Fighters.

If it taunts, it is a Fighter, if it is a Fighter, it has the lowest dps with the highest hp's. That means it can't hurt you (as much as the others) and takes the longest to kill.

If it taunts me, I just switch back to the target I was fighting before.

I am fighting in the Sprawl, the mobs are the same. I would start the fight and then I am hit with a taunt. Now I could use /target_previous to go back to the other mob in my hotbar, but it just seems easier to start attacking the mob that used taunt. In a group would this be the safest way if my group is using assist? Sorry this is first time playing a tank class.

In a word, no. Mages, Priests, Scouts, Tanks is the only way to go in taking out group encounters as the previous poster suggested. Never take out the tank mob first, it just gives the mages/scout class mobs time to do that much more dmg making you a far less effective tank.

If the taunt hits while the first mob is half dead while the other is unscratched, you should switch back as well. If your group assists you (meaning having you targetted and channeling damage through you) it wouldn't matter UNTIL you fight large and high hp encounters and have a summoner class with a scout pet in grp. You can hold aggro vs. a scout pet if you are fighting the same mob. If the pet fights another mob (because you got taunted for example) and the fight takes some time, you will at some point lose aggro to the pet. If the pet then dies, the summoner gets all the aggro. This can lead to tricky situations. In hard zones to wipes. Pick the targets in the above way (Mage, Priest, Scout, Fighter) and stay with the one you chose. I immediately switch back every time. Much safer that way.

Getting your mental resist up will help you resist the taunts as well.

I have always thought that killing healers first was best. I find that they are relatively easy to kill, interrupts are effective in stopping them self heal, and once the healer is down, and of course mine is still up, the others go down like a house of cards that just lost an important card at the base of the house. I think trying to kill a mage first while the healer sits there throwing up their heals for it is counterproductive. This has been my experience tanking encounters for some years anyways, certainly if you have had success with casters first there is no reason to change. I look at the healer as being the heart of the group, kill the heart and the rest of the body has no choice but to die.Oh, and of course, select the first to die, kill it as fast as possible and then move on. Apply your plan to the fight.
Message Edited by Belce on 07-17-2006 06:53 PM

Speaking of taunting mobs, any tips for the Playful?

Be sure your macro has the capital letters included just as Wabit posted or it won't work.Having 2 good mezzers helps even more.

Honestly...if you can't kill the mage fast, your DPS is either lacking or just plain sucks

Solo-(in a multi-mob group), I will go after the mage, get it down to say 75-80%, then switch to the healer while it starts healing the mage/fighter. If it starts healing itself, I just switch back to whatever I was killing before. It may not be the best way to fight, but I really, really suck at timing interrupts and stuns At least this way it keeps the healer occupied while draining a good portion of its power.

if you have a mezzer with you, it wont matter which mob first to kill, cause of the permasolomobs :smileyhappy:

otherwise i would go for healer/mage/scout/tank, and try to time the interrupts on the healer. its not that hard to time an interupting taunt when the mob starts waving with its hands....
