Depends on your reason for picking guardian. If you are only lvl 20 and chose the class for its abilities then id suggest starting again. Leveling a guardian is harder than other tanks and in the end there is no 'payback' for this disadvantage. My advice right now would be paladin because I am assuming you like fantasy plate type tanks rather than ninja type tanks. Pallys are great tanks endgame, superb aggro control and the versality makes soloing easier. If you dont like good, then an SK is also a bloody good tank.If however you picked it because you like the pure warrior class in a high fantasy game then stay as a guardian and suffer. Levelling will be hard and you will be lfg a lot because you will only be picked by friends unless you are the last tank available. In the end game you will sit out many if not most raids because altough you can MT, you cant actualy do anything else like "off tank" as your aggro isnt up to it. You wont be dpsing either You get all the disadvantages of the pure tank, and there are few advantages. If you can put up with all this then there is a silver lining. IF your guild hasnt already [Removed for Content] out a paladin for MT they may choose you because at lvl 60 in fabled gear its my personal opinion that there is a slight advantage in favour of guardians as MT fir 2 reasons:1) they continue to taunt after going oop.2) they have some 30 sec buffs to mitigation and that root/reduce all enemy dps backed up with tower of stone and guardian sphere that mean for a brief brief time they are bloody tough buggers. In a raid this may well be the one thing that lets you get he raid under conytrol right at those crappy moments when it goes crapwise.

Talk about not true. My guilds MT is still a Guard..my guild's MA is still a guard. Even buffed, my numbers dont come close to a Guard in terms of hit points.

You guys wanted a pure tank? You have a pure tank, and hes pretty good. You guys wanted to be The Raid Tank? Guess what? You still are. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a Guard, other than maybe some aggro problems.

In any other respect Guards are still the superior raid tank. Do I need to post screenshots of Guards with 4300+ mitigation and almost 70% avoidance, with almost 10k hit points? Jeez.

The only thing SoE did to tanks is bring the rest of us up a bit. Your guard is not nerfed, hes just not as overpowered as he used to be...and thats a good thing.

I did not say they suck Nemi. Perhaps you think they suck, but please dont put your opinions and label them mine. I simply told him what to expect as a guardian. He will be MT or LFG. 25% of the classes are fighters. Only 18% can be tanks. If he doesnt get a tank post he will be LFG because he has no other role in a group and his solo ability is atrocious. He will even be unlikely to off tank in a raid due to the aggro issues. But if he can put up with these disadvantages he will be rewarded by being fractionaly better as a raid tank.Or he can play a paladin and give up that slight tank advantage and be able to solo well, act as a backup healer, off tank with ease all on top of being a good main tank.

yah i agree with the lfg thing, only 1 out of 6 people in the group needs to be a tank/ guardian. 4/6 of the group could be scouts/mage, and if there really is no dps, 5/6 could be healers. If a group is really desperate they will have more than 1 tank but is unlikley that will happen. Most groups i get into at dof i am the only tank cause no one wants to have a group whipe in the high levels its just dumb, everyone wants the "perfect" group, scout, healer, tank, mage, with only 1 slot reseved for tank, the other classes have at least a 25-50% chance of getting into a group. we have a 16% chance.

No, it does not suck.

I will tell you this! As a Guard you will have a hard time getting into a group if they already have a main tank, because of Guards lack of DPS. Guards serve one purpose and one purpose only and that is to tuant his [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] off! Also be prepared to upgrade those tuants to adept III otherwise you may have a hard time holding aggro! Also you may want to get yourself a full suit of legendary armor at higher lvl's 40+, to bring yourself up to par with the other none plate tank classes!

One thing I did with my Guard is boost his wisdom a bit! Magic attacks can really damage plate tanks!

If you like to solo DEFINATLY DO NOT CHOOSE A GUARDIAN!

Message Edited by CyberVet on 11-29-2005 08:17 AM

My guardian sucks so bad, when I run through the croc caves to mine for resources, all I have to do is run up and down the caves and the eroded ore and sand scoured stones literrally gravitationally pull right to me and stick to my person. Here in is the fundemental flaw with EQ2 and its class design..."No class really sucks"....which actually means "No class really shines"....which in turn means "BORING".

Guardians are a functional class if you look at us in a vacuum. We tank, and that's all we do.

We don't hold aggro very well, though, meaning that the quality of the damage dealers you bring to your groups doesn't really matter, considering they won't be able to spend more than half the power you are using to keep aggro.

You can offset our execrable hate generation by including an assassin, troubadour, coercer, or dirge in your group, which will make it easier to hold aggro. Even so, at 60th, having all taunts at Adept III or Master II, you will still periodically lose aggro to mages several levels below you.

And of course, if you look at the rest of the fighters available, you will find that they, too, work as tanks, only they bring so much more to the group than you do.

My advice: if you really want to play a plate tank, no matter whether in groups or as MA/SA/OT on raids, go paladin; if you want to play the best overall, including soloing, grouping, and raiding, go monk or bruiser.

And yeah, if offered the opportunity right now, I would gladly convert my guardian to a paladin (I already has a bruiser alt I am leveling up.)
