+Defense ??

Ok noob question....What exactly mathematically does +Defense skill mean?  I cant tell any difference in the numbers in my persona window when I increase/decrease Defense. Is it just an effective level modifer for everything else....i.e if im level 50 with 275 defense do i get treated as a level 55 when calculations are done when mobs take a swing at me? <div></div>
