View Full Version : Killing the Arena Champion as a guardian - possible?

I just checked out Sundered Paw arena and thought it was pretty cool. I was able to easily blast through every challenge up until I reached the Arena Champion. This last dude [Removed for Content] me pretty bad. I was able to get him to 60%, thats all.

Via /ooc, others said they were able to kill the champion, but none were guardians. Has any guardian here managed to kill the champion, and if so, how in the world were you able to do it?

Also, what was the reward if any? I'm gonna try again soon but stop before the champion to see what the reward is.

At level 50 with no fabled armor I did him pretty easily. It was neck and neck for a while but I was only in the orange when he died. Most of my offensive arts are adept 3 so that may have made a difference. He might just be harder at certain levels... I think any level 50 should be able to win without too much effort though.

Took me three tries and down to the red with 300 health before I killed him. Was a rough fight. Potions are your friend. Every other fight I never dropped below green, maybe went into the yellow once or twice. Use potions, use any kind of mana regen item you got....If he starts to get too frisky anchor him and kite him around a bit to get some regen back. Try different things.Good luck.

First try, and he kicked my sekksee barbarian behind Had the wrong setup though, willt try again - should be doable.

Took me two tries and the first one resulted in me getting the Pit Champion to 2% before dieing. I power drained him the and was at 94% (4 bp procs) while he was at 48% and oop then he opened up a can of whoop [Removed for Content] on me. 2nd try saw me winning with 30% life left. Did not drain him this time but concentrated on using Protection for stifle and interrupts / stuns to stop his specials as much I could. Also used Ferocious charge and Cleave when they were up. Manastoned and poped a couple power potions to keep my power up so I could continually use CA's on him.

Yah hes a total joke.. used no potions or didn't put on my ressit gear (DR gear would have helped). Smashed it, finished at 80% HP, mostly from using my manastone 3 times.

Seemed pretty easy to me. First time I finished with about 65% hp left. Second time it was a lvl higher and a bit closer - finished with about 25% hp left but it did get off a few heals which definitely made it harder (about 40% of its hp in heals), Not sure why the lvl varies but it didn't seem overly difficult to me at either lvl. Certainly potions could give you the edge if you were having probs. My gear isn't that good either - only 1 fabled.

Did beat him (no fabled gear, 3 ebon pieces). Since avoidance seems to not help much in this encounter, I went for max hp. Screaming Mace + Shiny Brass Shield +17 STR/STA potion + Heal Potion (used once) + Mana Potion (used once) Had 30-40% hp left when he went down. Draining him and stunning/stifling him as much as possible is the key, as others have posted already Edit: /pets his mushroom companion

Message Edited by Sir_Halbarad on 07-02-2005 05:37 AM

At lvl 32 this guy completly wasted me. I have pretty decent items (nothing imbued which could benefit) but i got him to around 40% and he took me down with ease. Gonna try again with shieldbashing to interupt him and stun etc cause his CA's do too much damage.

I believe the problem with him is the way attack/avoidance rates scale, or rather the way characters progress. It seems most problems people have with him are before level 50, I myself couldn't beat him at 43. I have no doubt this guy is a walk at level 50, when your gear is the main focus of character advancment and you're nicely decked. However, below level 50, some people like myself prefer not to go the extra mile to get that rare armor (not to mention many of us can't afford it, nor have the time to farm it). So what is the problem with that you ask? well, the problem is that with the lower end armor his melee is not neglible. Not to metion many mobs skew and twist evasion and mitigation rates, and I'm guessing the lower end of the scale feels these alternations most obviously. Right now I attempted him twice. First time I went unprepared, I dished all out offensive and he still outdamaged me, I didn't go far before he totally falttened me. The second time, I came prepared, I figured that if stifle and drain him he'll be easy enough to take. Well, that proved true to some extent -- with some thinking I made a little more progress, however, not enough for me to win. The second time around I kept him stunned / stiffled and tossed a drain here and there, but even while keeping myself to these abilities, his power supply simply outlasted mine (not to mention he'd still out-melee me even when stifled). Sure, I made more progress this time, I even got him down to around 30% area before I ran completely out of power, and he, with the power he had left simply healed himself back to 50% (even tho I tried interrupting, just didn't have the power to interrupt or keep him stifled enough. Now, after he healed back to 50% (while I was around 20%) he simply prompted to beating me into a bloody pulp -- both of us clear out of power, I had enough to toss on Toughness and Commanding Presence, and he still beat me like I was a pinata. Like I said, I don't think there's any problem with the level 50 version of this encounter, but rather the scaled down version of it. Here's how the fight prased the second time around -- even with stifles and stuns he did 3k damage meleeing alone. ** All that is stated above is the author's personal opinion.

Well tried Pit Champion for the first time last night and didnt do so well. I went with PGT/Shield thinking my main concern would be to max my surviveability and power..relying on CAs to do my dmg. I drained all his power, had him to about 60% life with me at about 50%HP/30%POWER then he proceeded to turn me into a EQ1 Ranger....his normal crushing hits did me in. No entirely sure what to try next... Maybe forget the shield and DW a good DPS weapon with the PGT. My gear isnt top end but its decent. With all my buffs, buff rings, etc I sit around 6800HP and 2500ish AC. Most my DMG arts are Adept1 or APP4. Im also wondering if maybe completely draining his power is not the way to go...seems like if he has some power he concentrates on dots, heals etc which may be easier to deal with/inturrupt..instead of him going all out on melee (crushing) which again is what did me in. Gonna take a whole lota tries im afraid to see if I can ever beat him.

I am a level 50 guardian. I have average gear with all Adept I's. I am not in a raiding guild, so I don't have prismatics nor any kind of uber armor.

This weekend I tried the Champion 4 times using 4 different strategies and got decimated.

Method 1: Dual Wield + Potions = Got him down to maybe 50% health before he crushed me.

Method 2: 1-Hander/Sheild + Potions = Same as above.

Method 3: Run him around until he runs out of mana + Potions = He nuked me down to the red, then just meleed me to death

Method 4: Mentor down to a level 46, thus making the Pit Champion level 49 and he ate me like I was a Thanksgiving Turkey.

So my conclusion is that unless you are in a raiding guild and have great gear, your chances of beating it are slim. I feel like I want to go off on a rant about it, but it's a waste of time really. They [SOE] don't care, and I am sure you don't care.

At levels 38-40, I just don't see how this possible.
I have decent equipment, imbued armor, some fabled pieces, some adept3s, and I used up many of the best potions that coin can buy. I also tried several different strategies, as others have done. Best I ever did was get him to ~20%. I like a challenge, but needing to have the best gear and master arts in the game to beat him doesn't seem quite right..

Any level 40 ever beat him? What was your gear/strategy?

Tried him three times now at 50. First time I got him to 50% HPs, second time to 35%, and the third to 25%. But if he supposedly heals at the end, I'll have a tricky time mustering the power to kick and shield bash him enough to stop it. Don't have the screaming mace, and I havn't tried the PGT yet, so the extra power might make the difference. I've stocked up on some potions, so I'll give it a fouth try dual wielding, and go for teh win! :smileyhappy:

Tried again last night. Did somewhat better but still not even close to beating him. Got him down to around 35%HP and 0%PWR. Once again it was his crushing melee that did me in. Heal potions helped a tad but they just dont cut it considering their heal amount and their reuse timers. This time I used Bloodfire/SBS. With buffs, potions, etc my HP were around 7200 and mitigation around 2800ish. Was using mitigation, STR/STA and Disease reisist potions. Maybe its just me but this guy seems a whole lot tougher when he is out of power than when he still has some power. I tried not completely draining his power but eventually he does it on his own then proceeds to crush me to death. I think my next try Im gonna forget the shield and try to max my DPS with a heavy hitting 2h with proc and see how that goes.

As 50 Guardian was pretty easy. I used Tower and Hammer Went toe to toe.. Making sure staggering slam / protect / supresstive was used in a cycle and cleave and retaliate to teach him a lesson. Rinse and repeat. My gear is far from spectacular but my arts are ad3/master1

Tried for a fourth, fifth and sixth time, and got it on the sixth. Fourth with Bloodfire/SBS, got wasted. Fifth and sixth with Screaming Mace and SBS. Btw, I've had one potion of reflection, and strength food for all my six fights. The first time with the Mace, it procced on all battles in the arena ~except~ this one, and my power ran out. Second time though, procced three times (that's 975 extra power!) and I beat his [expletive ninja'd by Faarbot] down! :smileyvery-happy:

I was quite elated as you can imagine. While I did do this after the "retraining", I found that only the Champion's direct physical damage had been reduced. From what I can remember, I was being hit for about 250-300 damage before the patch, and about 175-225 after. But I finished the second fight with 30-35% health/power, so I'm confident I could have done it pre-patch.

I really think Screaming Mace/PGT is the best way to go if you're not decked out in full rare/raid gear.
I would like to offer some suggestions to fellow Guardians having a hard time with this bastid

He is not a normal mob for sure but is following a kind of script. Don't let his HP or mana bar mislead you because his nukes are following a strict pattern. Go with a shield. Make sure you stifle and stun as soon as those light up. The way I see it his nukes are timer based and if you are not extra equipped his mana will outlast your HP so stuns and stifles are very important.

If you do not do anything special but just hit autoattack and CAs as they come up he will kill a self buffed Guardian with his HP at 10-20% That is my personal experience :smileyvery-happy: So if anyone killed this bugger without concentrating on the fight then I dunno how.

Check your CAs they are not allways mana efficient. Lots have attached debuffs etc.. Find your 4 most mana efficient damage arts and only spam those in addition to your stun and stifles. Use your CA that absorbs the power from the mob no matter how small the amount looks like. Make sure your self-haste is ON.

If all these fails no worries there is a fallback plan :smileyvery-happy:

Contact your friendly Provisioner and Alchemist and get the 100+ HP Soup, 100+ Mitigation Potion, 100+ HP potion and go kick the bastids [Removed for Content] :smileywink:

I have watched my Templar wife killing him while talking to me and sipping his coffee driving me nuts... I am proudly towing the stupid shroom behind me after 2 unsuccessfull tries but I will NEVER EVER go there again :smileytongue:

Message Edited by Nazowa on 07-15-2005 04:30 AM
