View Full Version : Pondering Role
When I started off my Fighter I loved it. I was nicely rounded and dealt as much damage as i could absorb in groups. Warrior wasnt much difference except people loved my tanking abilities. Getting guardian started off nice and all but then lvl 25 came around. I dont know if this is in general or just for me, but since 25 its been the slowest exp gain ever. Im only lvl 27 now and when i got lvl 26 around 2 months ago i gave up because it was just nearly impossible to get decent exp for the time spent grouping. So I came back the other day and i soloed abit and i got into some higher level groups in RoV and i got to 27. Then today i joined a group for RoV and i was the MT. But i just couldnt taunt anything off anyone. I was basically useless to the group. I left the group of my own will straight away because i just wasnted good enough for them. So i waddled to the broker and found none of my 3 non-adept taunts on the broker (its not like i could afford them anyway). I decide to give RoV another go being a MT and its just the same. It takes me my 4 taunts + the way time to launch another to even gain like a 25% chance to pull um off the monks or scouts in my groups. So i come to my reason to post Im feeling like i dont have enough coin to finance a Guardian and i no my skills personally are up to the challenge because 15-25 i was a good MT, but now my taunts, damage attacks and stuff are just no match for anything that will give me good exp. Its actually driven me to the point of not wanting to have such an important role. So i was wondering if you friendly Guardians could give me some tips or anything on what I should do and/or information on a class which can just blend into a group and not be missed if hes under performing on a mob. thanks

you said you were grouping with higher levels.. its lot harder to keep aggro of higher level dps chars, if you havent played in a long time allso it would be better to group with lower levels and gain the tanking skills back first. i remember myself in that level range it was really hard to keep aggro with guardian, zerker kept aggro easily but i had to use all my mana to keep aggro. if you want to play tank then just continue with your guardian, it will get lot better in few levels. i remember tanking level 41 mobs in runnyeye at level 30 and it was loads of fun. if you want to be just tanking in exp groups and dont feel like you want to be main tank for raids or something tougher then exping then you might be better off with some other fighter. i like my guardian alot, i've played other characters allso but none of them is so much fun as guardian. i like fighter that is only a tank and nothing else.

First off I have to agree about bein MT and bein lower then the DPS classes. That makes it much tougher to hold agro in that circumstance. I love being a Guardian and I wouldnt change a thing if given the chance to redo my Character. A few things I learned in my 48 lvls..... If you are goin to use a bow to pull any mobs that is fine, as it gives you ample space to tag and run back. FIRST thing you should do is use your AE encounter taunt to grab insta agro on ALL the mobs at the very start. Next CA you should be casting is Hold the Line ( Before you commit to locking yourself down be sure to position yourself and the mobs in a good location for the others to get behind mobs for max DPS). Then proceed to use your various taunts to hold agro the best you can. One other tip is to buff early on in the battle if you can afford the power as it generates alot of agro to you ( If I get an add during a battle I will normally work a few taunts on it and throw a couple of my group buffs to help lock him down on me and off the "Squishy").

Combat Arts.....

I highly suggest for most people to upgrade to App 4 or Adept 1 CA to help increase your agro and also bump your Dps a bit. I know Master and Adept 3 rock but not all of us have that kind of bankroll. At lvl 48 I use mainly App 4 and some Adept 1 and I normally hold agro well as long as I dont slack off or run out of Power.

Money to fund your Armor, Weapons and CA....

Yes money can be hard to come by. I will give you a few ideas how to make some and improve your gear and your self esteem. If you can take the boredom become a crafter more precisely a Provisioner. You can make your own food and drink and save loads compared to if you have to buy that all the time. Yes it is boring and not alot of fun but it will save ya some money. Secondly SOLO. Thats right, I said Solo. If you solo a lvl or two every 10 lvls or so you can make some decent money and equip yourself with better armor, weapons and CA. I remember spending lvl 36 and 37 in Zek killin the solo Orcs near the zone in. Yes it was boring but by lvl 38 I had all my Fulginate armor, Fulg weapons all ready to go when I hit 40. I have said it a million times (I have very bad luck on lottos) if you want good XP then group, if you want good money then solo.

Mid 20 can be a lil tough on a Guard. Main thing is this, if you like the class then stick it out and grit your teeth and make it work. If you want to lvl fast and make good XP then more then likely you wont have the money to keep your gear in tip top shape. So sometimes slowing down, taking your time will not only teach you how to play your class better it will allow you to make your char stronger.

If you can afford it buy the Split paw expansion. I solo in there and it is a rush and a good challenge to me. If you can solo it without dieing very often then you are gettin a good grip on how your class plays.

I also play a Berserker, lvl 29 and also a great fighter class. Was my first char actually then I switched to make the Guard. I like both for diff reasons but I am slowly working the Zerk up as it is a great class to play.

Drozan

48 Guardian Venatorous De Maulous

Butcherblock server

well i guess i'd be considered a grinder... i'm lvling my warden atm... seems like i'm going through lvls so quickly (up to 36) that i outgrow my gear way to fast to put alot of investment into it... and doin all of this solo (i find its better exp than grouping for me)...

upgrade your skills... app4 at least for most everything... its a big help for the agro... if you are in a group with higher lvl ppl then focus more on just gaining hate than doing damage... taunt everytime it comes up, buff everytime it comes up... go to the extreme with this and start scaling back and doing more damage attacks inplace of some of the buffs...

25-35 i was horrid at agro control if i remember correctly... but i was doin some things wrong; trying to be dps, not callin buffs in fights (30 sec buffs are alot of hate)...

just rememebr its not always on the tank for agro control... the others in the group are gonna get it if they use the big heal first, chainbuff in combat, nuke hard to start, ect...

have no fears as you get higher agro control gets easier... i'm barely ever taunting now at 50 for exp/loot groups...

if money is an issue right now goto EL and get missions for turtles on the beach from the dwarf under the pier... just keep doing those untill you have some bankroll, and the exp will be ok for you solo...

make friends with an armorer and alky... there are alot of them out grinding up lvls... most just sell what they make back to the merchant offer to pay a little over the price the merchant gives (armorers at least)... and you might get deals on CA's if you buy in bulk... don't be afraid to do a /who all <class> and see if anyone in their 20's is in a tradeskill instance, send tells... ya never know until you ask... from my experiance most are friendly folks and will help you out...

my 2c

Wabit
