I am soo mad!

Yesterday, group went after the MG instance. Great group of two high lvl wizzies, me a 50 guard, a mystic, coercer and inquisitor. Everyone but me stayed back near or outside of AE damage range. We killed the inquisitor mob as the first mob doing great, absolutely no worries, it was too easy actually. Then out of no where, on the landing death blow of the Inq mob, Aggro is completely reset. All mobs ran all over the place. We whiped. I have all AD3 taunts and buffs, ALL! and no matter what i did, i couldn't get aggro back. Anyone else run into this problem or is this a bug, is it me?

PS, i am posting this into the Encounter forum as well. Going to see if they have any advice as well. FYI in case you see this again.

Thanks for the help in advance.

This is a bug that's prevalent in various areas of the game. I've had it happen (and not happen) on the Ash Owlbears of Nektulos, Goblins in Runnyeye, Orcs in Commonlands, etc and ad naseum. I believe almost any group encounter is capable of this and I have yet to discover either a reason for it happening or a way to counter it effectively. The only advice I can offer is be ready to unleash every taunt generating skill in your arsenal the moment it happens. It usually takes me between 3-4 taunts to pull something off.

Hi there Guardians, fellow fighter-class cousin Monk here.

I've experienced the same thing you've described, and even Rescue does nothing to pull aggro off the others. There is not even a pattern by which the mobs choose their new targets, it just seems to make the mobs attack ANY random member of your group EXCEPT you.

I've sort of found a work around to this... maybe it's just coincidence but I find when I decrease the amount of group taunts, increase the amount of PBAE attacks, upon the death of my main target the mobs don't ping pong around my group.

It might seem to be that mobs with an extremely high amount of Threat on them (caused by taunt skill), and very little damage inflicted by the owner of the highest threat will cause them to go berserk.

Disclaimer: Doesn't work everytime though... but since I came to this realisation, i've been able to minimise its occurance.

yes this lose of argo seems to happen alot. HOs' and or a group buff do help regain argo sometimes. Had it happen to us in MG also. I mean whats the sense in having adept3 taunts that add over 2k threat and have it set to zero after one of the mobs die. This lastest patch has made it worse. ahh well this should get fixed someday.

Generall

Havn't tried this in MG yet (although we are heading there soon), but the best way I've found to reduce this aggro behavior is to do an area attack shortly before the monster dies. It seems that if you have actually done damage to the other monsters recently, they are much less likely to start switching targets. The hate from normal taunts/buffs seems to get wiped periodically after a monster in the group dies, so I generally try to let all my good taunts refresh so I can use them right after we switch to a fresh target to rebuild hate fast. This doesn't work every time, but I rarely see this issue any more and I think it is primarly due to me adjusting my tactics to adjust for the bug.

My workaround on this is to make sure I get direct damage and single target taunts in on every mob in the encounter as much as I can. My pattern is typically to get the group started on a single mob, I switch to the next, do some damage get a single target taunt or two in, an aoe taunt if it is up, swap to next mob and repeat. For me this works about 85-90% of the time to prevent the agro loss.. the problem I run into is people killing off one of the mobs too fast for me to walk through them all to get agro built up.

As long as you can avoid/survive a hefty Devastation or two, you're fine.

This is known to me as 'the runneye bug' ( the place not the server ). When one mob in a grouped encounhter dies aggro on all the other mobs resets, usually meaning your chanter gets eaten or your healer gets stomped on.Runnyeye was horrendous for this bug, most other areas were fine - until Live Update 9 hit the servers. Since then i have had this bug constantly. 3 times in a row in Nek Castle 50 instance, especially in the sisters ( never had it prior to LU9 on them). Not had it in MG yet, but i havent done the Naggy Quest instance for a while.Best way i work around this is to spam group buffs to go off when a mob dies, or pile on the named and hope you have some caster aoe dps to take care of adds. Obviously this wouldn't work with the inquisitor and the drakota though Haven't done that instance with one group yet, you have a Mezzer? If so we usually mez the inquis and take out the named first with 2 groups.Hope this might help Ven

Yeah, Just to say that this has happened to me last two times that weve tried MG, before it was normally a cakewalk and then twice in a row even when Ive had what should of been rock solid aggro on the death of the inquisitor mob the main guy has just switched and started nailing folks. First time it happens it feel embaressing, next time your just like [expletive ninja'd by Faarbot]!. Farhane of guk.

We got owned in MG last night due to the same situation. Was doing fine until the inquisitor died, then the aggro reset and all hell broke loose. By the time I got aggro back, we had lost too many people and were not able to recover. It seemed to target the weakest people first - poor 45 illusionist went down first in about .5 seconds

OK please excuse the noob question but are there different versions of MG instance? My friends and I have done the Broken Key quest, then we zoned into MG. Saw a bunch of non-aggro mobs...some NPC and Lava Born....killed Lava Born rather easily. I take it from reading this thread that there is a harder version of the instance?

3 versions of the instance...

It happened to me last time we 1grouped the 2grp MG instance also, twice during the encounter. It used to happen to me in nek2 all the time but I havent been there in months so I'm not sure if it's still so bad there.

It seems to happen to me a lot less now than it used to, so maybe they are actually working on a fix. Some update, or atleast conceding that there is a problem and theyre working on a solution, would lift my mood on the situation quite a bit. Its very frustrating when it happens since we have no control over it, if it was a fault of mine I could work on it or change my tactics to keep it from happening, nothing is a sure thing when it comes to this bug though and I've tried everything to keep it from happening.

Pin StNeedles wrote:
3 versions of the instance...

Yeah just did a search and the reason we never saw the 3rd option was cause none of us are level 50 =P Now for noob question #2......Assuming we get the 3rd option since im only 8% from level 50 ...can it be done with lets say 7-8 people? =P Thats about the max number of people I can usually gather up

If you take 8 people, the group of 2 should be range people outside his area attack or they will have a very tough time. I'm sure it can be done with one group if you have the right people and good equipment...we're not to that point yet though Oh, and it depends on what warlock spells the guy roles up with. He was hitting me for 500-1000ish with noxious bolt and devestation, (poison resists were a little over 4k). The horror stories seem to come up when he has nil distortion and starts hitting people for 10,000 a pop.

Yah MG does this, it is broke. The good news is you can plan for it and have all taunts ready. Smallest force we did MG with was 4.

Crappy thing is,

We had one group and we were owning the instance. My advice now having finally completed it is to

1. Pull dragon with Entrench.

2. Switch to crap mob and AE taunt

3. Kill crap mobs first

4. If you have a mezzer mezz the inq and kill the big guy first or kill the inq and save all your taunts and buffs for the big guy.

And yes, it is quite embarrising (SP) to loose aggro (especially with all taunts and buffs Ad3). I was ashamed of myself the first time it happened thinking i did something wrong hehe. Then we narrowed it down to the Inq (/whipes forehead).

Another thing to look out for is the Warlock version of the big guy vs the Wizard version. Wizzy version only hit for 2k max. The warlock hit me for 7569 of poison damage on one shot. Kind of crappy i think for a x2 ^^^ lvl 50 mob so no chance there of staying alive. I only had 9k HP and no fabled gear.

Message Edited by M1A2Tankage on 06-16-2005 03:06 AM

yeah nil distortion is a massive pita, couple of guild raids wiped due to me getting owned by this spell, but if you get him and he doesnt have this spell out of the set it's pretty straightforward The reacton from one of our scouts when he got one shotted for 12.5k was funny though lolwill probably need to do this again soon for guildies so i'll let you know if we had the aggro re-set issues, although we usually have a mezzer with us to hold the adds which helps.
