View Full Version : Guardians as a solo class to 50
Greetings. I've been playing EQ now for about two weeks, and since I solo 98% of the time I've been looking for a class which is great at solo'ing. I've always been drawn to warrior classes, so I guess I'm just wondering...how good is guardian at solo'ing? I've heard good things about them, but I haven't been able to dig up a thread that is even remotely recent on the subject. Otherwise, what other classes do you guys recommend? So far I have a 20 guardian which I've put on the back burner since I messed up the level 18 racial trait for my barb(picked strength instead of +defense), an 18 crusader, 14 mage, and a scout sitting on the isle. The fighter classes seem to be the king of solo'ing in the lower levels from what I've seen...I'm just not a very group oriented person most of the time anymore. Played a warrior to 60 in WoW, was the guilds MT and ONLY tank for a long time; just burned out, it's a very demanding position. I wouldn't mind going back to it end-game, but I don't want to deal with pick-up groups up to 50. Sorry for writing a book...I guess it just boils down to...zerker or guardian for solo play and end game? I realize the combat changes are coming, but as it stands right now...what does the picture look like. I've no end game experience =) Thanks in advance. <div></div>

at a guess pallies would make great soloer with heals and stuff. As for Warriors I cant say for guardians, But assuming that there at least passing close to berserkers they make great soloers. With huge amounts of HPs Mit buffs etc its really hard to get hurt and there damage shouldnt be too bad either.<p>Message Edited by Benaire on <span class=date_text>05-10-2005</span> <span class=time_text>02:51 AM</span>

<DIV>Well I can say this for our soloing. Greens unless crazy amount of casters generally will be no problem. Some blues are no problem how ever anything else can be touchy (dependant on specific mob). </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Since you are leaning into the fighter archtype then for pure soloing (or 98%) I would say any are a good choice but there are mobs others can solo because of their supperior DPS to guardians, but then again some mobs have more hp and thats the fights where Guardians (soloing) can shine. (Pallies too most often). </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>If you are going to solo as a guardian I suggest going with DW weapons or a good 2hander upping your DPS as much as you can. You buffs will do enough for you to defend well enough while soloing (unless you get carelss or too cocky). </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Hope that sheds a bit of light on your question.</DIV>

<font color="#ff9900" face="Verdana" size="2">Drop your stance type buffs (which impact your damage output) and you can solo real solo mobs easily enough but it comes down to out damaging the opponent (use stuns/stifles where possible, use top of the line drink/food). Group mobs will hurt. All that might be subject to change in the upcoming revamp. </font><div></div>

You can solo greens, and some blues as a guardian but I'm warning you its slow and painful, just make sure your mitigation is good and your defensive stats are up to par, odd's are you won't be able to out-dps the mob you have to rely on your defensive traits to win you the battle.

My guard is only 27.5 right now but I can say I can effectively take down green^^ and some blue^^ and the fights aren't so long. I am sure it'll drag out more in the 30's and 40's though. I prefer to solo with my guard because of the +defense buffs (currently +12) so I really don't have to worry about mobs slappin me around.

I can easily solo at 50. It just takes forever. If the mob is a green ^^ I usually do a few power drains then just chat in guild till the mob is down. Soloing is painful to me so I only do it for quests and such.
Thanks for all of the replies, guys...coming from WoW where warrior was pretty arguably the worst solo class to 60, almost anything is a blessing now; these fighter classes are much more resilient for solo'ing. Lately other interests have been tugging at me also...namely trying a healer class like Inq. out. Debuffing mob by mob looks like a PITA though <img src="/smilies/69934afc394145350659cd7add244ca9.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> Any other suggestions are more than welcome, other than that...decision time soon. Thanks again. <div></div>

<P>First off you get to choose your race triant again so don't sweet it if ya choice +5 str before +5 defence no big. </P> <P>Secondly as a guardian (alt) my level 29 Guardian back at level 28 soloed Claw a named lion level 26 double up arrow easily came out no power 4 bubs of HP. But failed to be able to take A blue giant same level double up with a fury behind him without them both running outta power.(then 2 more added but thats another story) He can pretty much take any green mob but must be choicy about his blues heroic/group encounters. I seem to be able to solo up to 1 level of red solo mobs but get more exp off the green heroic ones. So ya can solo just be careful cause you can't solo everything.</P>

<P>At lvl 50 I can solo some lvl 48^^'s while basically afk. I can solo faster and better than an equal lvl conjuror. As far as lvling up, i think that soloing is a viable option against the right mobs. Theres basically a hard cap, either a mob whoops your [expletive ninja'd by Faarbot] or you whoop it's [expletive ninja'd by Faarbot]. Green melee ^^'s are the best bet when your lvling. </P> <P> </P>

I have a level 35 Guardian on Faydark and I have no problem soloing blues and white Melee type mobs. When it comes to caster type mobs its a different story. Even some greens whip my bottom. So its a matter of choosing the right mob. Tobann <div></div>
Felt like a big 'noob' when I learned last night that you can choose your racial trait again at a later level( like the poster a few up told me also, thanks). So I've picked up my guardian again and have been playing him. That made me feel much better, and the fact I don't have to go through those first 20 levels all over again is great <img src="/smilies/283a16da79f3aa23fe1025c96295f04f.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> I've found using 1h/shield vs the halberd I received from the guardian lvl 20 quest has a huge difference between them...I go from being ~75% health after an equal level mob to around 90-95% with the 1 hander(both weapons orange to me right now). Takes a few extra seconds to kill, but man is it nice taking almost no damage =) These are things that pretty much everyone in this forum knows, but this is all news to me so it's exciting. Don't you love that new game feeling? =) <div></div>
