What is the best way to target mobs when your group consists of a few pet classes. It tends to get crowdy and pets and chars drown the mobs so using the mouse is allmost useless. Targetting the nearest NPC often just targets the pets in my group. Target next NPC often just bypasses the actual mob and targets whatevere is around + the group pets.Waiting on getting autotarget once a mob gets a hit in, is kind of slow as if it doesnt get a hit i wont autotarget it. Meanwhile another DPS in the group might get aggro.Anyone have any tip on how to do this the best way?Wish they added a way to target or switch between locked encounters.

I don't have a good way. I second the question. I use my mouse if I have to be precise or the "target next NPC" gets stuck in an unintended encounter. usually its not a big deal targeting a pet and get past it quickly. I tank often but I'm rarely the raid's assist so my target is inconsequential to the event. I imagine its a bigger issue in a single group, where I personally was the assist for much of my time.

Couple of points.

TAB - This will cycle through targets in the current encounter you have targetted. Need to use this before you kill the mob and lose target. Basically when the mob is almost dead, I TAB to the next mob and start beating / taunting it, leaving the group to kill the 1st mob.

This will solve most of your problems and also help you will aggro.

TAB will often select a friendly pet though. I don't know if this is a recent change as I never used to have this problem, but now it is an issue pretty much every fight if I am with a necro. And heaven forbid my necro friend uses one of those spells that brings in like 4-5 extra pets... it makes targeting a nightmare. Simply using TAB in a single group, I sometimes get stuck on only the pets and repeated tabbing just will not go to the monster - I end up having to use my mouse. Its quite annoying for someone who has been used to using the TAB key pretty much exclusively for quite sometime now.

far from a solution i know, but here is a little bandaid i use. I have a macro with /assist %T That way if i do accidently grab a group member or whatever i can atleast hit that and get the mob that way. I know you will auto-taunt/attack thru a friendly target, but if your MA the rest of the group will not...

The best way I found to target one, is to move sight to where im looking down on the fight and target from there. Usually that works fine for me, and/or doing a mob taunt to get aggro on me if i am MT. But like i seen in an earlier post, you can target nearest grp member and fight/taunt thru them until you can get a target on one of the mob(s).
I fight in 3rd person mode. What I found early on is that in an area where there were many mobs in the proximity of where I was fighting that Tabbing through them was targeting mobs not engaged in our encounter. The problem becomes when you do this, a ranged fighting PC in your group may get a spell or arrow off just as you are tabbing through and pull that encounter as well. Or worse is sometimes I would get "stuck" on the out of encounter mob (especially if I cannot "see" the next mob) and couldn't get off of it, which always results in someone aggroing that mob and making a mess. Or worse targeting a group member and hearing "Why are you targeting so and so!" or...a tradeskill node!

If I am in 3rd person mode, I have gotten proficient enough where I can use the mouse wheel right mouse button and adjust my camera to any angle in less than a second. Then I can target a mob (say if it's aggroing someone in the group) to get it off by clicking on it to target it. I haven't had a problem since I started doing it this way, and it did take a bit of practice.

When you start doing it like this, I think you will find you can anticipate where mobs might go and adjust as you are fighting accordingly. My favourite angle when there is just a ton of stuff going on is directly above my head (as if I were looking from the sky down to me).

This will also help you position in a dungeon. If you have your back against the wall, you won't be able to use 3rd person efficiently, so you will naturally move the encounter so that you are taking the frontal attack (such as Barrage) and nobody else, and be able to see everything in 3rd person.

I like the macro idea too, although you have to select a target that is actually getting hit to use it and would be good if you happen to select the wrong target in your encounter, and that target is engaged.

Good luck!

Vitesse Errdegahi - 40 Guardian

Baptized by Fire

Antonia Bayle

One of the other problems I have noticed with Tab, is there is no order to the rotation. In a larger pull the mobs like to get in a circle around you. When you tab to the next mob, you may be getting a mob on the other side of the circle and doing a 180 degree turn to fight that mob. Not a big deal for you, but your melee will have to move a longer distance to get in range of that mob. Its even more pronounced with those melee that like to camp the backsides. Add to that the fact that larger group pulls have mobs with lower individual HP and your melee could spend half the fight running around looking for the next mob.I have gone to a top down third person view. It makes it easier and more efficient for the melee as I can select the mob next to the one that just died. Still its not perfect though as mouse clicking can get you into trouble. There have been times where I have inadvertantly looted corpses, which then pops the lotto screen up that you have to clear before you can see to select next mob. And you never know when there may be some activatable item on the floor. There is no great way I have found yet but top down third person seems to get me in trouble the least.
