<DIV> <DIV>I was duoing the other night in Zek with a Templar friend of mine and noticed something a little odd. I asked him what his Mitigation value was and he said 56% I checked mine and it was exactly the same. At first i thought it must be to do with his combat arts boosting his mitigation up, but we both buffed each other with all our Mitigation/Defence buffs so technicaly we should be on par there. Also he is lvl 30 and i am lvl 32. We both have orange con armour/jewelry mostly forged feryon(sp) but neither of us have any decent rares.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Do Templars get some self only damage mitigation buffs?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Don't get me wrong though, my avoidance was around 60% and his around 40% so overall my AC value was higher (in old terms) but this did have me a little bit confused as I thought Guardians had a higher base mitigation due to us being a fighter class.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Any thoughts?</DIV></DIV>

Hmm, I <i>think</i> that Mitigation (right now) is solely dependent on what armor you wear; I don't think class has anything to do with it. If you and he were wearing equivalent armor, as you say, then your Mitigations should be about the same.BTW, level has nothing to do with that % number, either. Remember that your display showed that you would mitigate 56% of the damage from a <b>level 32</b> mob and his display showed that he'd mitigate 56% of the damage from a <b>level 30</b> mob. Big difference there.
A characters unbuffed mitigation is currently a function only of the gear he/she is wearing. Same gear, same mitigation whether you're a templar or guardian. At 32 I think you have just two buffs that affect mitigation: Dig In and Battle Cry. Battle Cry is a group buff, so everyone gets it, and it is indeed a nice, albeit brief little boost in mitigation. Dig In is self-only, but doesn't give nearly as much mitigation as Battle Cry, and the difference it makes may vanish due to *slight* differences in gear. As guardians, most of our buffs, selected traits, etc. focus on buffing up defense and parry, which add to our avoidance. Even those great big honking tower shields add only to your avoidance. Yep, you heard right. Guard's are *avoidance* oriented tanks that just happen to have the same mitigation that every other heavy plate class has. Your armor has nothing to do with why you're a better tank than your templar friend. It's higher innate health and defense/parry skill combined with a few self-only parry/defense buffs. If you want to think of this in roleplay terms, you might think of hits that land on your armor lightly enough not to scratch you as avoided hits. i.e. The mob hits your armor, not you, so it's an avoided hit, just like a hit blocked by your shield is an avoided hit even though it definately hit the shield! Of course, this is inconsistent with the way EQ2 works currently, which is, in fact, self-inconsistent. For example, shields work precisely as described above. The mob hits the shield, not you, so it adds to your avoidance. However, armor adds to mitigation without affecting avoidance at all, so if a pixie threw a toothpick at someone, whether or not it hits their skin and does damage is totally unrelated to whether they're prancing around naked or encased in steel. The system is currently pretty much arbitrary. Don't try to rationalize it. That's right now of course... Things may be considerably different after the next live update. (and probably not any better) <div></div>

<P>Ahaa, thanks guys that makes more sense now. Of course, i shoulda realised that 56% at 32 is better than 56% at lvl 30. That would mean against a lvl 30 mob my mitigation would be a lot higher and against a lvl 32 mob his would drop.</P> <P>Hehe, just checked again last night and self buffed he stiil has over 50% and mine is 47% if i dont use Battle Cry</P> <P>We compared items as well and he does have a few items that are slightly higher AC than mine (relative to level) Guess i need to upgrade my gear as it seems that those items that are a tad rarer seem to make quite a bit of difference.</P> <P>And yeah, i see what your saying about avoidance AC. It looks like that is one of the things they are trying to address on Test now. I bet by the time those changes go live all our parry and maybe our defence buffs will be shifted over to mitigation values as part of their combat art ballance. Interesting.</P> <P>Thanks for the info guys</P>
