Simply put:

With the recently announced planned shutdown of SWG, what motivation do we, former SWG players, have to remain as future SOE players when we run the demonstrative risk of a game being eventually shutdown versus being converted to F2P like all others have in the past in their waning years?

Disclaimer: Yeah I know there may or may not be licensing issues involved with this but the question remains, will SOE go forth on a venture like this again without putting in place contractual mechanics to protect their player base?

EQ, EQ2 and Vanguard don't have those issues. SOE owns those IPs, so it's easier to keep those games running.

There was plenty of speculation that SWG would shut down. People guess that from the minute TOR was announced, thinking that LA wouldn't want 2 Star Wars games going at the same time. There seems to have been some truth to that.

If the license partner doesn't want to renew the license or the fees are more than the game makes, then the game will get shut down. Stinks for everyone, but it's the nature of the beast.

One to look at in particular is Planetside.
