Just hoping someone can give me some advice, what are the rules for weapons at these kinds of conventions? I could have sworn I had seen people with costume accessories of weapons, but I assume they were plastic or some other material than, for example, a sword you can buy on a fantasy site that I assume the blade is made of metal.

I don't know anything about fantasy weapons, but I MIGHT be trying to make one, or finding one that looks similar to something I want and then editing it to what I want.

However I have no idea what plane or hotels consider allowable. I know its strict, but some kind of version of fantasy weapons have to be allowed since I saw them last year. I am guessing regular swords you buy at a fantasy store are out of question because of the blades. But is sharpened wood ok? Is it possible to buy plastic that looks like a shiny sword... or spear..? What materials are allowed on a plane/hotel/convention that can work on a weapon and that won't look like a 5 year old made them?

If anyone has made or brought any fantasy weapons to a convention please reply =) If I get some answers on what is allowed, I will also like to ask some questions about actually making one.

It's actually going to depend upon where it is. Assuming the poll holds and Vegas is the winnner and is where they hold the event:

Not allowed:

any knife which is made an integral part of a belt buckle, switchblade knife, blackjack, slungshot (sling-shot), billy, sand-club, sandbag, metal knuckles, nunchaku, trefoil (commonly known as a throwing star)

Allowed:

Dirk, Dagger, Sword, Machete, etc. However these weapons cannot be concealed on your person (i.e. they must be in plain sight). Only Nevada residents with the proper permits can carry these items concealed. You also must be over the age of 18 to be in possession of said items in Nevada.

Now as far as Venue goes, most places have their own rules. And some are very annoying. For instance, Harrah's properties do not allow any weapons on premesis unless you are a peace officer or have a waiver from the Manager or the main office. Whereas the LV Hilton for example will allow you to carry said items during an event in which the item would make sense to carry (this rule is because they have the Star Trek Convention there yearly and people bring all kinds of odd weapons). However NO casino/resort/etc will allow you to have them on the gaming floor (Nevada Gaming Commission rules). You would have to check with each venue specifically for rules.

Some resort rules also apply to replicas.

As far as a plane, NO weapons of any kind are allowed on a plane as carry-on. If you have the item in checked baggage, it must be secured in sheath or scabbard, wrapped and declared. Replicas also apply to the same rules on airlines as the real items.

Ahh thank you so much! Nothing mentioned of wood, except for the club bit. What I want to bring will have a wooden staff section, but I also want to buy some sort of holster like I've seen at ren faires to have it in plain site.. so that better not be consider concealed.

Still not sure what the spear end will be made of. I am thinking against painted wood since it may be to sharp/hard.. someone told me I could use foam for that. I'm not sure what they mean because all I can imagine is foam like a foam finger.. and I really don't want the spear end to look that crappy.

Any artsy people able to give me advice?

I've seen people bring staves, but I've yet to see anything metal, even a peace-tied sword. (Well, aside from Tharkis' recent blacksmithing creations, but they're small and never on the convention floor (to my knowledge).)

Most hotels say NO WEAPONS.Oi usually use a staff, meself. After all it is just a walkin' stick, isn't it?At least, Gandalf used that as his excuse in tha Lord of tha Rings movie, hehe.Tha Rio last year was NO WEAPONS fer sure, an' so was tha Hilton in Vegas afore it.Oi somtimes see folk wif swords on durin' tha hour of tha costume contest, but Oi dunno whut happens if hotel staff or security see ye.Or perfers not ta have me beer time innerupted, so Oi take no chances.#
