What do you guys think is a reasonable budget for this trip? I'm forced to fly there(I live in Ohio) but would really like to attend so I can cover it for my website(Vanguard Radio, official radio station for Vanguard). Unfortuanately I'm a college student, so I dont have a whole lot of money : /

Hrmm, more I look into it, more I realise that a reasonable budget is around 1.5k - 2k$

Cost of travel there is one thing. From what I heard on the EQII boards, weekend SOE rates are 150$, weekday rates are 140$, so for a Thursday evening, Friday evening, Saturday evening you are looking at 450$ for a room there. Plus the cost of the fan faire itself, then food and souvenirs and anything else you may need. (and any taxes/hotel fees or whatever). So maybe budget in the 750$ range + Transportation costs; less if you share rooms and what not. If you can book your travel to arrive earlyish Friday morning you could probably save your Thursday night stay. (And no one says you HAVE to stay at the Rio)

Several people from my Guild have booked hotels nearby and some are rooming together to save costs. You should see if anyone would be willing to room with you. Lots of folks do it at the fan faire.

Remember, you don't have to stay at the RIO. You can stay other places...

You can usually find rooms between $60 to $90 on weekdays and $80 to $120 for weekends if you look around. If you live near anywhere that Allegiant Air flies, you can usually get some better deals. If you book airfare 3 weeks out, you can usually get pretty cheap there too.

Sweetpea is a Blackjack player. In '05 at the Hilton she played enough blackjack that the Casino Host reduced our room rate from the SOE special rate to the Casino rate. Effectively cutting our room cost in half. And we paid the bill out of Sweetpea's winnings so our 6 day stay was effectively free.

Now, every time she goes to Vegas, she stays at the Hilton and plays more blackjack and they always give her the Casino Rate of about $75 for week nights and $85 for Fri and Sat. Last time she went they completely comp'd her for the first 2 nights.

So if we go we will probably be staying at the Hilton.

Where ever you do stay, a few pieces of advice:

DO get the house Player card or whatever they call it. They use it to track your gambling. Not how much money you gamble but how much TIME you spend gambling. The more time you spend gambling, the more comps you can earn. Comps are usually accumulated in points or dollars which can be applied to your bill when you check out.

DO get to know the Casino Host. This is the person who will be able to cut your room rates if you do enough gambling. Check with the Casino Host BEFORE you check out. In '05 Sweetpea spent about 16-18 hours at the Blackjack table in 5 days. That was enough for the Casino Hose to cut our room rate almost in half. What would have been a $1000+ bill was reduced to just over $500 and Sweetpea had won over $900 at the table.

If you know someone who is a skilled Blackjack player, invite them to come along and spend the days playing Blackjack while you do SOE stuff. Even at today's gas prices, it's cheaper than 2 round trip air fares. AND is saves us the cost of a rental car in case we want to do any sight seeing.

Bah you can drive across an ocean; you'd just need to rent snowmobiles for part of the trip. Keep going north until you can't go north any more, then head south. When you get to Whitehorse or Yellowknife, rent a car and keep on going to Vegas. Might want to leave now while they're still snow on the arctic ocean though.

Being East Coast Canada, it's almost as expensive to fly me down there as it would be for a European it seems; (not quite but we're probably looking at the 750$ Range, give or take *sigh* ) Good thing mom's built up a lot of points from all the school trips to Europe she's arranged over the past decade or so. Aye, so much for the 'deal' I really didn't find anything cheap about it. I'm paying more to get down there this time than I ever had to. The flight is $690 and hotel another $900. Last few trips I've made to Vegas the flights were under $500. Considering I'm in Alberta..almost $700 for a flight is insane.

Can anyone point me to a cheap hotel? I cant afford the Rio at $140 a night and I'm not familiar enough with the area to know what's cheap and safe at the same time. Theres the El Cortez which looks appealing, because it's super cheap and only like 10 mins away by car....and it received good reviews online. I'm a college student flying from Ohio on a slim-to no budget so I'm trying to get an idea of what I need to scrape together. Thanks guys!

I've stayed at the Sahara. I think it's probably the cheapest for the "major" strip hotels, though I haven't looked at prices for the Fan Faire dates. It's clean, it's safe, it's big. It's also right on the monorail.

EDIT: Okay, so the prices aren't that much cheaper $108 for Friday, same for Saturday. I want to be there for the entirety of the Fan Faire so I can rep Vanguard Radio Even still, looks like that might be way over my budget with those friday and saturday night rates. It's not the worst part of town. The El Cortez is getting kinda run down. It's old. If you want to be that close, I would suggest something either connected to the Freemont Street Experience. I know transportation can suck, but it's much cleaner and usually the people are a bit more decent. If you don't know what I mean by that, a good chunck of people in this town get agitated with "tourists". People actually tend to be a bit more rude on the strip. Also there is a lot of construction on the strip right now. The Stardust will be imploded to make room for condos. They already removed a few other old casinos and other things including the Denny's on the strip. Plus all the construction for new condos already going on.

I got the 400 quote acouple weeks ago when I was looking it up. Seems like prices have changed over the past 2 weeks : / Looks like I should definitely plunk down the cash soon then Best price I can get online is about $450 after taxes and fees(atleast fees and taxes through Orbitz). Are there any other fees that I'm not aware of?

Actually fairly easily if you call them. And you usually get a free upgrade during Mon-Wed. I got my brother a room at the Luxor for $49 a night and they upgraded him to a suite for free...
The thing about staying offsite is the traffic is crap there. Every time I go, it seems to take 30 minutes to go 4 blocks. The extra cost of the Rio is worth the massive amounts of travel time for me.
It's not that bad as far as traffic goes... I've seen much much worse.

I've booked my room over at the Gold Coast, its right across the street from the Rio. $385 for the 1st-5th including taxes. Thats not even $100 a night. not bad at all.

After doing a few hours of research on a number of hotels on various sites, it looks like the 80$ and up hotels are worthwhile...the neighboorhoods and areas where the 30-60$ ones are a bit risky, crime and less than comfortable rooms. Not to mention they are quite a ways from the main drag.

I am in Sacramento, and our guild are going to do the drive down, since taking a plane is almost twice as expensive. Guess we'll drive in shifts.

I do have a question about age...is there a age requirement for the event? I have a daughter that plays, and she'd like to attend too.
