Let me tell you about the lady that was the troll. I met her two years ago on eharmony.com. She had never played anything but Duck Hunt and when she asked her sons what it meant that the man she had met was a guild leader in Everquest, they told her to run and hide. Instead she married me, made a toon, now MANY toons, and grew a very highly respected pally with a little over 12k, as a part time raider, and nearly 500AAs. She is the acting XO of our guild and not because of nepotism, but because of her honor, skill, and the respect she has earned in our guild, and on our server.

She and our dear friend Aatineth, who was Therris Thule and missed the competition because it started early (70 chanter, ~500 AAs and going on 5 years in game), decided to go for it in the costume contest. They considered a lot of different things, and when they made up their minds, they researched and shopped for ideas and materials. They spent many hours making the costumes, and in the case of Seamy, three hours putting it on. Neither one expected to win, but they are the kind of ladies that put their heart and passion into things that matter. Brasse is simply a class act. I do not know her any better than you know the little girl from western Kentucky that moved to Atlanta to marry me (lucky man), and won, but this lady is exceptional. Had it gone the other way, she would have shown just as much class as Brasse, and been just as happy.

Ok, she is my Fantasy Goddess. Last November she was diagnosed with kidney cancer and had surgery within at week. It was barely in time, and she will be fine, but part of her idea was that she has not been able to get her tummy back to its usual flat shape, so she said, I will push it up with a belt, paint it green, learn to slouch, and dress as a troll. That takes some special self confidance and class.

I will catch hell for this post, but I am entitled. From the little time I talked to Brasse, and the rest of you, I know how much you respect her. I just wanted you to know the lady she lost too is just as special, and her win means a lot more to her than you might think. She is a testament to our game, to me, to our guild, and to the costume contest. It was not a fluke, but a very close and good competition between two classy ladies from different worlds, that have EverQuest in common.

Grats to you, Faddor, for finding someone so special. I know what you went through with the cancer thing. Let's just hope that it's all behind you and Seamy.

You're right about Brasse being a class act, and it sounds like Seamy's in the same category. Both had exceptional costumes, and it's a testament to both of them that Brenlo had to ask for three rounds of applause before he could decide the winner. They were that close. I didn't envy him that job. It's just too bad that there weren't two first prizes. They both deserved it.

Ashlanne and all,

During Fan Faire I was interviewed (and so were others) by a group from the University of Texas, who were researching avatars and virtual communities. Great stuff and a fascinating topic in this era of virtual communities. Thank you Edward (dang I have so forgotten your last name but best of luck on your graduate studies!) and all who worked hard to take a real life view of a virtual community.

Ok now the scoop at http://avatardocumentary.net/ is a video of the five finalists in the costume contest complete with sound and Brenlo's skills with the "patented crowdometer" at work!

Other pics too, and some interesting stuff regarding the project and who "they" are! Midnight Tempest was interviewed following Fan Faire, I think in the realm of a community within a community. Again best of luck Edward and all, and hats off to the Prof on the camera...great shots of my troll tummy! I can't wait to see it on PBS!

Seamy

Having been in the final 5 with these 2, I can say I didn't stand a chance! You guys were amazing, and I bow to you! (I was the nekked high elf...I am married to a ranger, had gone to heal him...AGAIN...he can't hold aggro worth doo doo and bam, I'm dead again in the guild lobby about to summon my corpse). Thank you for sharing your stories! I will be back again, I have time to plot my next costume....muahahahahahahahahahah! Grats to you both, actually TO EVERYONE who took all that time and energy to make their costumes, get them there, (some of us flew quite a ways to get there!) and participate in the contest! This was my first one, but it won't be my last!

<HUGS>

Haertagold Meister

70 Cleric on Tunare Server

Invictus Vir

Your costume was excellent and you made the final five! That had to be a thrill. What about the barbarian that was standing beside me in the first group? He had a killer costume if you ask me. I have been looking at all the pictures so many have linked, and there were some simply incredible costumes that were not entered in the contest. How about the guy in the full chainmail, or Theris Thule, or the girl in the high elf costume on Friday? From all the posted pictures and from memory, who had the best costume that was not on stage?
