View Full Version : My one complaint about FF
<div>Production. Poor qaulity sound/lighting/video in the large conference room where we ate and in the rooms where you had the dev team answering questionsmade participation very difficult and seemingly "low quality." More screens, more lighting, and better sound (not using the speakers built into the ceiling but having your own sound systems) would go a LONG way to the feel of the production. Since you guys do all of this in-house, you probably would want to consult with an event planning agency or have a production company help you out. It will add tot he price of the tickets but would go a long way to promoting your cause.</div><div> </div><div><a target="_blank" href="http://www.proactiveinc.com">http://www.proactiveinc.com</a> is a good exampple of someone who can help <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></div><div>Just a suggestion <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></div><div> </div><div>The rest of the event was very fun and informative. <div></div><div>This was my first Fan Faire.</div><div>And to be honest I highly doubt i'll go again.</div><div>I've been a SOE customer for 7yrs. And am now a complete Sony Station Player. (i play all the station access games)</div><div>I've always wanted to go, but usually their too far away for my gaming butt to afford.</div><div>First there was no posting as to WHEN and WHERE the signup for Best of the Best Tourney. I show up at registration (i prereged) at 730pm, well after the major crowd, I find the Tourney Table..and no one manning for sign-up. When arriving the next morning...its well underway and i was told i had to sign up before hand....nice.</div><div>Not letting it get me down, i still had the Tourney that really got me excited. A 70th lvl zone for us to tourney in, Excellent. I don't expect myself to see 70th lvl content for at least another 6-8 months. Being able to see 70th lvl toons and powers! Outstanding!!I'm one of the first teams to sit down...and it's broken (correction its only broken for my team...since I want to play a Warlock, and there's only Freep Warlocks) Not only is it broken but myself and the 5 others of my group have to sit for three hours while they try to fix it. So they cancel it and hand out T-shirts, they call my group over to the side (I assume since we just sat there for THREE HOURS, it'd be cool.), and then give us (noted different T-shirts) but not a single person in our group could wear it (Too Small!!).</div><div>All of us contestant to the EQ2 Tourney are promised another In Game Item. To be honest it better not be another bloody house item.</div><div>And the Tabernacle! a Karaoke band and Three? Dark Indie bands? I can understand one..maybe two...But don't you think a convention involving Electronics...Some people may WANT electronica/techno? or maybe some Industrial...There are dozens of both DJ's here in Atlanta that Aren't hard to find. Ask DragonCon...Sony has a deal with them. And they have Both kinds of DJ's every night.</div><div>Ya..the karoake was fun. Seeing the president of White Wolf sing Purple Rain and the President of NERO International sing Cradle of Love, was priceless. But I like to dance...I love to dance...But to a little different beat. Now i'm not being selfish, alot of people would have preferred a techno/Industrial set..even if just one DJ.</div><div>And then the EQ2 Live event. One of the teams took one of the Stone Buckets, and placed it under a table UNDER a tablecloth. WE were told they'd all be within sight. So i'm assuming the group was full of a bunch of spineless Freeportian Hacks...</div><div>No one was watching the buckets.</div><div> </div><div>To me the whole things seem to be poorly run and planned. Even the guy at the beginning the of the live quest for eq2 said that not everyone was ready.</div><div> </div><div>How many years have they been doing this fan faire thing? 6?</div><div> </div><div>So, in closing, I feel I did not get my money's worth from the Sony Fan Faire and thought it was "Almost" a complete waste of my time and money.</div>

<div></div><div>I agree about having some tea to drink with a southern meal....although Hourseradish in coleslaw wasn't right at all..... My eq2 guild sat in the back of the dining room to eat and you guys had too large screens that I know you could have hook up so we could see what all was going on up stage.. Bad viewing spot...That would had been nice. other then that I had a great time. meet some great new fews in eq and RL.</div><div>Eciixia</div><div> </div><div> </div><p>Message Edited by Ecixiia on <span class="date_text">04-10-2006</span><span class="time_text">09:08 AM</span></p>

<div></div><p>I hate complaining, I always feel like I am whining and some should tell me to get my own cheese! <img src="/smilies/69934afc394145350659cd7add244ca9.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> But as for suggestions, I can go for that. First I had a wonderful time and since it is my first Fan Faire and my first ever any kind of convention yadayada I have nothing to compare it to, so it was cool! But...now the fun part.....I agree water blew for the only drink with dinner, and beer at $5 a pop and cokes (in the south all soft drinks are cokes lol) at $3 a pop...does seem like a good idea to serve something besides water.</p><p>Organization on the events such as Live Quests and BoTB Tourney could have been better. Basically more info available so there wasn't such a scramble in knowing what to do, when, etc, etc....a plan for the fans you know. I know that I checked everyday on this site for info under the Contests tabs and it never appeared. Utilization of that part of the forums would have been great!</p><p>A few more tables in the 'Legends Lounge' for those that wanted to sit a visit with others would have been nice, but we found floor space and adapted!</p><p>Watching the BotB tourney was awesome, I love the big screen and how we could all see what was going on in the arena!! I do wish the lights could have been out to see it better, but then the gamers would have been in the dark so not a way I could see to help that.</p><p>Ok so I have two real complaints I guess (searching for my own cheese to chew).</p><p>One the silent bidding for Phat Lewt. I won the bid on the Bertoxxulos Server Banner, highest bid yadayada...fair and square. When I went to get it...ooopppss...it was gone. My husband took the matter up and was told to forget it, it was gone. So I do not know if some stole it, lied about who they were to get it, or SOE just flat out sold it to someone else. SOE claimed me the winner but were not able to produce it. It isn't the end of my world by any means, but gee I played fair you know. Thank goodness I did get the Tholuxe Paells banner I also bid on, so all was not lost. But whoever you are that took or whatever you did to MY banner I won...you suck.</p><p>Lastly, the costume contest. Scheduled to start at 9:30 pm. It started early, was finished by 9:15 pm. I have a very dear friend that spent much time on her costume, she left dinner early to go dress for it and returned only to find it already over yet it was only 9:15. What was up with that?? Really she is due an apology, in my opinion...and there maybe others. I was lucky hubby called me on my cell as I was downstairs and I only made it in time by the hook in my green nose! <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></p><p>I loved it don't get me wrong, I had a blast but all with all things we love they aren't perfect! I hope that I will be able to go next time!</p><p>Seamy</p><p> </p>
<div></div><div></div><div>Overall, I had an absolute BLAST! Given the size of the crowd attending and the constraints ($125 - $155 per person for two full days), I'd have to say that SOE staff did one HECK of a job putting this together. Sure, it's easy to find things to complain about -- I've never in my life attended an event that was flawless from start to finish. Have realistic expectations and you won't be disappointed.</div><div> </div><div>Sure, tea would have been nice with dinner, though :smileywink: </div><div> </div><div>I tip my hap to the developers and other SOE employees who ran the event. Almost all of them were very approachable people and I thoroughly enjoyed conversing with a few of them. (/wave Kytherea and Prathun)</div><div> </div><div>IMHO, events like Fan Faire are what you make of them. Mistakes will happen, but if you sit back and let that ruin your experience, then you have no one to blame but yourself. An event gets cancelled? Well, you can either sit around and complain about it, or you can find something else to do for fun - there was PLENTY going on at the event, even if you only struck up a conversation with another attendee.... sure beats pouting. :smileywink:</div><div> </div><div>edit: Seamy, your costume was GREAT!</div><p>Message Edited by Hiddo on <span class="date_text">04-10-2006</span><span class="time_text">09:47 AM</span></p>

Most especially the broken machines and that your group lost out through no fault of your own. I wouldn't be happy either. <div></div><p>I have to agree about the lighting/sound/video issues. Those giant screens showing game previews on an endless loop would have been better utilized as additional views of the events on the stage. The sound problems during the Dev Roundtables were also annoying. They did fix this the second day by having someone give a microphone to the folks asking questions. It made a huge difference. The problems, in my opinion, were far outweighed by the fun that my guildmates and I had at the event. Our attendance at next years FanFaire has already been decided, we're just waiting on the announcement of the date.</p><p>Largo Fla</p><p>Wardogs Warden </p>

<div></div><p><span>I had a great time. There were a lot of little things like the problems Thursday night, and some of the sound and lighting, but none of those amount to much in my book. With a couple of exceptions the SoE people were very nice and responsive and did very well even when having to work around the unexpected.<span> </span></span></p><p><span>My wife won the silent auction for the Bertoxxlous banner, and was very disappointed when the Phat Loot store could not find it.<span> </span>I hope who ever got it really needed it.</span></p><p><span>My biggest complaint is about the costume contest starting so early. My wife and my best friend spent a lot of time making their costumes and planning for the contest. My friend, Aatineth McCracken, dressed as Terris Thule and her costume was awesome. She could hardly eat dinner she was so excited, and nervous getting up courage to go up on stage.<span> </span>Because of the way her costume was made, she had to go put it on between dinner and the scheduled 9:30 pm start of the contest.<span> </span>She left dinner early and made it back by 9:15pm, but did not even get to see my wife win.<span> </span><span>Her mask hid the tears whether real or just in her heart. <span> </span></span>We all realize this was not intentional, and wondered if anybody else got left out.<span> </span>My wife almost did, had I not found her smoking a nervous cigarette and touching up her makeup.<span> </span>The hurt was real, and the win bittersweet because of our friend.<span> </span>I do not know if SoE can do anything to make it right for her, but at least an apology is in order for this classy lady that gave her best effort to be a part of the Fan Faire, and not just one in the crowd.</span></p><p><span>Still, we all had a great time and enjoyed meeting everybody.</span></p>
<div></div>This was our first fan fair and it was a blast. My wife and I hope this won't be the last we attend. I found the room rate at such a nice hotel to be very reasonable. The brunch with a dev at every table was very cool (thanks Jason for sticking around and chatting with us). The sound issues people are talking about were minor in my opinion and if they would have had tea at the table folks would scream they should have had water. Can't please everyone I guess but for my wife and I we loved it and would love to do it again.

There were things here and there that could be improved. I agree with Mysstari, the wine of the south (Sweet Tea) should have been served as an option for the meals. There were a few odd things that I wish had been done a little differently. With that said, I did not go to Fan Faire to have a Disney World(R)(tm) experience. For me, it was all about meeting and having fun with the people I have known online for 7 years but never had the pleasure of meeting in the real world.I went out of my way to make everyone I met feel comfortable and welcome in my city as possible. I hope everyone had a good time and took good memories of Atlanta with them. In fact, I hope each of you comes to Atlanta for a visit now that you know how great a place it is.To the SOE Team:Even though not everything went as planned, I think it was a great party and a great opportunity to hear the thoughts of the community. I hope you continue to do these events and keep improving them.

While I love EQ, and have played since 2000, I am just speechless of how unorganized the event was. From beginning to end, from the sign up sheets, to the EQ2 Egg event, to things not going off as scheduled. When Vannoth (sp) did the events, things worked like clockwork. Everything happened as scheduled. At the Chicago FF, there was a name ticker that ran on the board during the opening event, and everyone got a kick out of watching the list go around, hoping their name would be next. There were player made movies up on the screens, and people felt rallied like a football game. Cheering, laughing, and celebration of the game. The devs would show content they were working on for the future, and actually took the time at the bigging of the forums to talk about some of their plans. Here are just a few of the things that could have been different: The table tents for the guilds werent placed on time, and everyone milled around for 10 mins until they were given out... and then... we had to find a table for ourselves anyway since they didnt place them, but just handed them out. Then the raffle was restarted so many that thought they were the highest bidder (over 500 bucks on some) went for 50 dollars to someone else. The worst point of the weekend was when the EQ2 event just fell apart. I cannot fathom who thought of useing a PvP environment for the event. Im dumbfounded. Prizes were given out the EQ1 players in the amounts of hundreds of dollars, with a TV, cash, and in game titles, and 1st, 2nd, 3rd was recognized. However, prizes for EQ2 players consisted of tshirts, gift certificates, and nothing else due to the event being cancelled. The Tabernacle kicked us out into the street, with no warning. The party was too far away for anyone that might have diffculty walking close to a mile there. And even if they could, it wasnt wheelchair accessable.I do understand, that planning is not done by one person alone, so I do not directly blame Brenlo for everything that went bad this weekend, but it seemed like it was thrown together at the last moment.Where was Invida? Where was Kurt Shilling (i though he was coming)? Why did the computers we were using for the tournies running ATI cards?I just want to say again, I love EQ1-2, and I am a long time fan. But compared to previous Fan Faires, this was C-. I hope things will change the next time around. Our guild plans on going again, but if there is not an open apology for how things were run, Im not sure if I will bother promoting it.I did have a blast with my friends, and the devs that took the time to hang out. But I guess I could have planned that myself and saved 155 bucks.Sorry for my negativity, but I think we need some real input so this doesnt happen again.

<div></div><p>The more I read and think on this thread, the more I realize that it is not so much about negativity but a want for Fan Faire to be the best that it can be. As fans we love it, the commradarie, the laughs, the letting our hair down and having fun meeting people who bring us the games we love so much and meeting those who share our love for playing. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></p><p>I don't see any points that are frivolous or mean spirited, just wishful thinking for those things that were important to us to have been perfect. Lighting and sound issues never crossed my mind until I read it here, and yes they could have been better. Big screens for those in the back of the banquet room are a great idea. Tea...oh yah, no doubt! Horseradish in coleslaw IS wrong! Equalization on prizes...yep! Times matching the printed schedules (being booted at 8 on Thursday, costume contest etc). Guild tents organized instead of the scramble as noted...no doubt. Jail time for Phat Lewt thieves (ok maybe that is frivolous). :smileysurprised: The points are all good ones and I think manageable for the next time.</p><p>One thing I am doing my best to remember, SOE has no desire for things to go wrong at Fan Faire. I feel sure they were stressed at least as much as any of us were. It is easy to think of things we would have done differently, hindsight is always 20/20. This thread is a good one simply because it gives a view from our side of the table. Do I want to sit on SOE's side of the table? No way! :smileytongue:</p><p>Thank you again SOE, regardless of the quirks it was a blast!!</p><p>Seamy</p><p> </p>

<div>OK this was my first SOE Fan Fair. I have been to many other conventions like this but for other stuff. First off I want to say I had fun. I really enjoyed meeting other players from my server and well making new contacts. So kudo's to SOE for taking the time to put this event on.</div><div> </div><div>Now for the part I know SOE is getting sick of... The parts that could be better. Here are suggestions:</div><div> </div><div>1. Either bring your own sound system or rent them. The built into the ceiling kind are not very good and extremely hard to hear what is being said.</div><div> </div><div>2. Bring/hire a sound tech. You all had the bass way to high and all people could hear was mumbling.</div><div> </div><div>3. Use the big screens. Yes I know you all wanted to promote your games and that movie... But come on when your doing like a costume contest put them up on the big screens. I know it isn't very hard cause I have done that work.</div><div> </div><div>4. Make sure someone is posted at every table at all times. I signed up for the BotB for EQ1... however everytime I went over there to check on how long until I get into the game no one was around to ask and well I went down and they were on group 4 and after attempting to find someone they told me to be back in an hour. I came back and they were done. Either the times need to be set in stone saying this groupwill be playing at this time or have someone who does nothing but watch the time and get an accurate time on when people should be there.</div><div> </div><div>5. Make sure all systems are setup before being shipped to the event. Showing up thursday and hoping to sit down and get on-line with your high performance systems only to be told ohh we are closing at 8pm cause the systems don't work was kind of fustrating.</div><div> </div><div>6. Clearly label what is happening in an area. Like put sign above the tables where you have people stationed saying this is registration for contest, registration for computer use etc....</div><div> </div><div>7. Your live events... Make sure everyone is up-to-date and ready for them. Showing up to the EQ2 one and them saying they arn't ready showed the users how un-orgnaized some things at the event was.</div><div> </div><div>8. Make time slots for people who are wanting to do as much as they can time to eat. So much was crammed into such a short time I missed some of the stuff that I wish I could have been part of. Maybe make the event a 3 day event and make it so E1 is one day, EQ2 is the next and the EQOA & PS on the last...</div><div> </div><div>9. Clearly label what forum is happening in a room. Like when the dev person who is running a forum walks in he changes the sign to say this is such and such forum happening. That way people are not wondering around trying to find where the forum they are looking for is located.</div><div> </div><div>10. For the tournaments... Try and test things ahead of time to verify everything is working as they should.</div><div> </div><div>11. Look into possibly getting your own dedicated T1 or whatever. Saturday the network became so sluggish and un-reliabale at the event that when I used your systems every time I zoned I got kicked from the game and well had to wait the 5mins until my character was logged off to get back in.</div><div> </div><div>12. Silent auction should never end during other events going on. IE... me and many others were in the EQOA Live Event when it ended and we all had bids on items and was unable to modify our bids due to well... we were all busy doing a live event.</div><div> </div><div>13. Lighting for the big eating things. That should really be looked at cause it was so dark for the stage area half the pictures I took did not turn out.</div><div> </div><div>14. Opening times... OK your doors didn't open until 10am and due to the number of people sitting at the entrance waiting for the door's to open it was hard to know that people in the tournaments are supposed to go on in at 9am (even thought at times not even the event staff was down there). Either open the doors for everyone at the same time or have someone standing outside who people can ask.</div><div> </div><div>15. Already have the e-mails and stuff ready to be sent for the in-game item for the monday after the event. It is tuesday adn we still have yet to hear anything.</div><div> </div><div> </div><div>OK I think that is enough gripping for now... Again very enjoyable event. Especially the EQOA Live Event... However I do not feel I got the full $155 enjoyment out of it as I had hoped. I do hope/plan to attend future events, but if they are anything like this one... I will would never go back...</div><div> </div><div>Billy S.</div><div>Corbett - Mistmoore</div><div> </div><div> </div>

<div></div><p><font size="3">One must keep in mind that Brenlo (and Vannoth before him) are the MCs not the sole architects of the event, and can do little more than deal with the myriad glitches as they arise. Timing on the costume contest and the OMG pink tank top issues may be laid at Brenlo's door, but little else. Those..... pink...... shirts..... GAH!</font></p><p><font size="3">The FanFaire, like all conventions, is the result of the efforts of literally dozens of people. Mistakes happen, people screw up, equipment fails (even after testing), and Murphy's Law is in full force at all times. People do get upset, and understandably so. I have been involved in convention planning in my past career, and yea verily, it really doth suck. Even when you cover every angle, the angle <em>will</em> bend and break, heheh. That said, I think the folks at SoE are pretty used to gripes, they do not just write them off as whining when the concerns are merited. They know how to learn from mistakes and disasters, which is why EQ and EQII have been so successful.</font></p><p><font size="3">After this, my fifth FF, I can heartily recommend that we check our stress in at the door and gooooo with the flooooow. <div></div><p>Hmmm....food Friday night consisted of appetizers in the form of rabbit food, cheese cubes and funky crackers and a taco bar kind of thingy. Never did find the fried mozarella sticks, chicken fingers, or even Cheetos etc, appetizers :smileywink: (wishful thinking!). Oh yes and no water as I recall. As far as the taco stuff....well I'll take Taco Bell anyday! Seems to me we should have had the EQ food of choice....PIZZA!!</p><p>Hehe, ok so I think the poster who said convention kind of food is usually not to hot likely has it right (this was my first any kind so didn't know what to expect). Good news is, it could have been worse!!!! :smileyvery-happy:</p><p>Seamy</p><p>BTW- HAPPY BIRTHDAY!</p>

<div></div>Should have been mammoth burger pizza with extra cheese from Rivervale and delivered by a rider on a Mad Max Piggie.
<div></div>Well both your costume and Seamy's rocked. However, the coleslaw did not..............and since I live in the south I could have made much better to feed the masses LOL. None of the food was representative of southern hospitality IMO.
Hm, i really enjoyed the Tabernacle thing. Given it was free drink, the ticket price paid for itself right there. Made the trip well worthwhile. The vendors were a bit lacking, however. Spoke with one of the vendors and they said they had been told about the event one week before attending. You have a bunch of medieval nerds (sorry, but hey) all cashed up with nothing to spend their coin on. Get some replica weapon and armor stands in. Sell some of those ridiculous velvet things you see people wear at medieval festivals. A decent toy stand, most toys seem made for adults these days anyhow. A poster stall with all that fantasy dragon stuff on it. Yeah, the D&D artist guy was great, but just have some cheap posters to compliment his limited edition prints.I imagine the vendors would pay you to have a stall at your convention. I thought there would have been many more, far better stalls there. This was my first convention. Perhaps you have tried these things at other conventions and they have not worked. There was evidently a lot of work in that convention. Just polish it a bet, eh?
