Let's see, Vegas has had fan faire more times than i care to think about. Denver in Feb is likely to be covered in snow (do you want to be on a 747 landing on a runway with snow?) Atlanta has yet to host a fan faire, Feb in atlanta is comfortable and is a city filled with things to do.

My vote, Atlanta hands down.

Denver - both hotels listed are right in the middle of a great area of the city. Restaurants, shops, bars all within a few blocks. I'm not tlaking Las Vegas blocks (3 blocks = almoat a mile), but a very reasonable walking distance. Weather in Denver can be very misleading. Sure, there might be 12 inches of snow on the ground for a day or so, but it could just as well be 65 degrees and sunny. My biggest problem with Vegas was the Hilton is so far removed from anything else in the area.

I may even be able to get him to drive to Texas or Colorado, but is unlikely, def not vegas.. too far.. we live in missouri.. so since it was in vegas last time, I say give others the opportunity to go and make it somewhere else

Where did you get your numbers for fares to Atlanta? It is the Delta hub, so I would have expected much lower fares. Maybe you forgot to divide by two to convert round trip to one way? In fact, I just went to Expedia and had no trouble finding the following:

One Way Fares from:

New York - $111

Orlando - $145

San Diego - $178

Las Vegas - $152

Dallas - $127

Average Fare - $143

This makes it one of the cities with the lowest fare. Only Denver is lower, and not by much.

Denver weather is actually very moderate... we do get some big snows, but those are usually in March and April. If it snows in Denver, 9 times out of 10, it's melted the next day. Denver is also in the midst of a drought and has been for years.

Denver (16-19) FTW!

As much as i'd like to visit austin someday I dont think it's a city i'd want to visit for the fan faire, as it's not a touristy city. In feb, i dont really want to go from wintery new england to wintery denver, so that narrows it down to Atlanta and Vegas. I've been to both cities quite a few times, and I have to give my nod to Las Vegas. Hotel prices and airline deals make vegas the cheapest option in general by far, even flying from the east coast. Vegas also has a whole lot more to do, every time i'm in Atlanta I spend half my vacation stuck in trafic it seems.

I'd like to see another north east fan faire, heck maybe even a montreal fan faire, but I'm sure holding it in another country would be a logistical nightmare, but in the mean time, Vegas is tried and true and a WHOLE lot of fun.

Denver, most definantly, aside from the possibility of brisk weather, which by now youve read a million times never sticks around. The reasons are as follows; No need for a car rental, anywhere in the metro area can be transversed by foot or by busline (Rtd is the nations best) you can even get downtown from the airport in less then an hour. The immeadiate area of the convention offers, lodging and entertainment, available to anyone of any income bracket (you can find lower rates then the Adams mark if you look) For those of you who enjoy skiing, its easy and inexpensive to catch a shuttle up to the hills for a day trip. And finally its in the middle of our fine country makes less of a travel for everyone thus increasing turnout.

Best thing about Vegas is the Hilton is such a cool place, and there is SOO much fun things in Vegas to do aside from Fan faire...shows ( barry Manilow and Wayne Newton are regulars, ZZ Top was there the weekend of the last FF, and more), the Star Trek experience, Quarks Bar, gambling, Hershey Factory, and all the other cool things at other nearby casinos and Vegas in general. Aside from gambling, Vegas is extremely family friendly. Atlanata has humidity, Ted Turner/Jane Fonda and the Braves. :p
Message Edited by Vlawde on 08-05-2005 07:19 PM

Well, since for some reason Sony HATES Florida, even though its probably a more interesting destination than Georgia, my vote would have to be for Atlanta. How fair is it that almost all the fan faires are in Las Vegas? There are 2 Fan Faires a year. This means there should be one for the East coast and one for the West coast.Makes it nice for those of us who can make a drive out of it rather than having to shell out all the extra cash to fly.One for each coast.. sounds good to me.Try something new!

I would have to say Atlanta. It's much closer for those of us living over here on the east coast, and even closer for a lot of people living in the central US. I also think(like it was metioned earlier) since there's two a year why not do one east coast and one west coast. That way you could keep on in Vegas, as so many people love Vegas(and why not). If Vegas were closer I'd def. vote for that, but as I can drive to Atlanta, and know people there whom I can stay with I have to say Atlanta.

    Az

I say Denver! It i scentrally located and would draw lots of people from outside region even. I despise Las Vegas. Seen enough of that place as it is. Never attended a Fan faire there nor will I ever. I suspect that the mass majority of people posting in here are Fan Faire Vetarans and so input from people who would attend should it be in, say Denver or another place is not propotionate to votes done here. I am making it a priority to have all players I know come here and vote however they want. Unless Fan Faire was in Denver or maybe Los Angeles this western gal probably wont ever get a chance to go to a Fan Faire.

I'm biased but Denver would have to be it. Its cheap compared to other cities, for food, lodging and travel. February is a great time of year in Denver, its typically in the upper 60s and sunny. Lots to do! Plus, it would be a great excuse for me to have to go, otherwise I'll have to beg my boss to get to go.If Denver is it, there will be a special EQII.com meetup . I'd have to say Denver...only reason I say that is there have been 0 fan fairs even close to the mid west...There have been some on the east and west coasts, and in the south, but none really in the midwest and Denver is the closest they've come to date. I'd love to see one in Kansas City but I don't see it happening, so I'd say Denver is the best we can get.

For those asking why they don't hold Fan Faires in other countries, the main reason is cost. Fan Faires have to pay for themselves, which comes out of our registration fees, and the cost of shipping all the junk to foreign countries (not to mention shipping all the SOE folks, who are numerous) would skyrocket the cost. The did try to organize one in France a while back, but they canceled it. They never explained why, but rumor has it that preregistrations were too low. There were huge numbers of posts from people in Britain and Germany complaining that France was too far to travel, so they wouldn't attend. That sounds strange to us in the USA, since many people travel great distances here to attend a FF.

The other thing that makes it hard to host a FF in another country is the myriad of laws in different countries. Just dealing with the different state laws we have in the USA is bad enough, but other countries have some really complicated ones, making ours look simple by comparison.

I would love to go to Fan Faire, been wanting to for 4 years. But there is no way I'd ever go to a fan faire in Las Vegas. Time of year does not matter, I'd still not go. I am probably not alone in those sentiments. I am not knocking Atlanta, but not likely I could ever make it down there. Only feasable choice for me is Denver so I voted accordingly. Despite what some may feel I do not think Denver would be a washout and there would be many that would come. The fact that next Fan Faire is in the middle of winter would make Denver more iffy I suppose but DIA rarely closes for snow and snow on the ground does not equate to there not being anything to do. If anything, the nightlife in Denver gets more exciting in the winter because people are less likely to go far from home. If they wont consider Denver for this fan Faire I REALLY hope the consider it for the summer one. Anyone wanting to go to Vegas in the middle of Summer has some issues anyways imho lol!

Fan Faire rocks!! Brenlo = uber Master of Ceremonies. A good time will be had by all.I'll be going back every time it's held no matter where it is.Open bar party at The Beach in Vegas is the win!! Can't say enough good things about the parties at Quark's either.Vegas = #1 convention city in the world. Hands down winner. Best weather.Oh yeah -- I'm not sure if they just checked published air prices or what. There are a TON of companies who offer charter flights to Vegas. They offer their flights much cheaper than published airline rates. You usually need to check with a travel agent or know their web site direct. Cause they typically don't publish charter prices on the one-click shop all airlines sites. (Travelocity and Expedia).I voted Vegas; however, will be there no matter where it is located.Cuff the Cleric

I had a really hard time in Vegas (and New Orleans) with all the smoke.
I voted for Denver, not JUST because it is close, but because it's a change. For those not familiar with it, Downtown Denver has a lot of great amenities, from shopping to museums to parks to bars. Additionally, it is cheaper for most to travel to Denver based on the price comparison listed, not to mention, and this is a big one, it is something completely different. Fan Faire has been to the east coast several times, as well as the west, with Las Vegas being one of the most common. I've been to a few of them, and while San Francisco is my favorite thus far, with Las Vegas a close second (location), I would love a change.

I have never seen Denver as an option, and in the future I would be honestly surprised to see it offered again. It's not common anymore to have most of the big events in Denver, whether Sports, recreation, etc. This is one chance I can see Denver having a legitamate shot at hosting a big event such as this, while I am sure Atlanta and a few other major East Coast cities will come up again.

February is the beginning of the snowy months, and I am sure everyone tends to think of Colorado as being snow-stricken from December through March. This is not the case. In fact, I find this region to be very modorate. It RARELY snows more than 6 to 10", and when it does, normally the weather turns around so fast that within a few days it is 60+ degrees out with the sun having melted off most of the snow. Sure, the higher elevations will be pounded, but from the front range on (Denver, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, etc.) out east, it is normally not bad at all. The Avalanche are only about 10 blocks from the Adams Mark hotel, right in downtown Denver, for those that would love to see some hockey. There are just too many things going on in Feb to mention them all here, and I am sure that anyone savvy with the internet like we all are could look up about anything they want to in this region.

I think Denver is an awesome choice, and I am stoked to see it offered. For those out east, come to Denver and enjoy some incredible beauty. I have traveled all over the nation with various organizations, and while it is nice to have something close by, turn it into something incredible by going some distance away to a place you might not otherwise go and see something new! Take advantage of events like this and explore! Don't let it go by the wayside in lieu of finding a location that is closeby to save a bit of money. Airfare is pretty cheap when I compare it to driving back and forth, and chances are there are a lot more Coloradoans in your guild than you think that have places you can hole up in and save some cash on hotel cost. There are also a ton of hotels in Denver, so look around and find one there that fits your budget--don't resort to the Adams Mark because it is posted. And that hotel is awesome, having some fantastic rooms that literally have a huge living room for hosting guests.

Take the chance, vote for Denver, and I am SURE you won't regret it!

I've only recently returned to the world of EverQuest after close to 3 years away, so I am a little hesitant to vote but I would give my preference as a top three choices.

1] Seattle, Wa (Any where in the Seattle / Tacoma area) The climate is cool and comfortable. There are some wonderful sites in the area and if you get a GO card you can see them all for one low price, including the Space Needle, Experience Music Project & Sci-Fi Museum, Underground Tour, Museum of Flight, Argosy Boat Tour, Mt. St. Helens and many many more. Check out the GO Seattle Card web site for a full list. http://www.goseattlecard.com/seattle-attractions.html Plus you also have the Casinos and very reasonable hotel/motel accomidations, many of them including banquet facilities.

2] Las Vegas, NV Vegas is always fun but it can be extremely expensive if you're not very very careful. I do like Vegas though and I have friends there.

3] New York, NY I have never been to New York and have always wanted to go so it comes up third.

EB

I am thinking, tho, that the poll is not the final deciding factor in the FF location, it is probably more for Sony to look at when they plan FF, there may be other factors they are considering as well.
I had always thought that there were 2 Fan Faires each year...one on the East, and one on the West. For those of you who keep yelling out "VEGAS" well, you've had enough of them there already. Give those of us on the east coast a shot at one as well. And there is no way that I wanna sit in Denver in February...we get enough snow up here in the northeast that time of year, thank you very much.

I'm really VERY disappointed that you seem to have "nixed" a fall Fan Faire. October was a great time to have one last year, nobody had to worry about snowstorms and flying in or out, and most spots around the country are of a comfortable temperature. New Orleans ROCKED, and I thought there was a great turnout.

I'm hoping for Atlanta. As much as it isn't my first choice, I guess its the lesser of the evils, being that you've chosen FEBRUARY...blah. /crosses her fingers and hopes there isn't a snowstorm to keep her from attending.

Will there be a special arrangement for refunds for those who aren't able to fly out if there is a snowstorm preventing you of doing so?

Vegas is by far the best city for one reason: getting to/from convention space is easy no matter where you are. with the monorail, there is no need to get a cab, no need to worry about a car (GOOD idea for all in the usual inebriated state that is the norm at fanfaire), and you can stay at almost any hotel and take the monorail straight to the hilton. Almost everything that you do in vegas is in a "walking" distance, where in all of those other cities, you cannot really pull that off. Only downside to vegas is the tendancy to loose money in gambling.-Lunae Toones

So the people have spoken and let us know that Atlanta is the place to be for the next Fan Faire and we are excited at the chance to visit that marvelous city (last time I was there was on my way to Basic Training at Ft. The next Fan Faire will most likely be in Atlanta. I do have some bad news though, it will most likely be in April. After the first polls ran we looked at timing and all the other things that go into planning an event such as this, including Dev team availability, and came to the conclusion that April is a much better time frame for us to provide a top notch Fan Faire for you.

So good news is Atlanta, Bad news is April.

Here is the time frame and hotel we are looking at, please remember that until a contract is signed, this is all tentative;

April 6 - 9, 2006

Atlanta Marquis Marriott, $125 / night

Thanks folks,

I suggest you go back and look at that list of dangerous cities again....Las Vegas does not even appear on the list...Number 8 is New Orleans, and I am sure you were trying to make the assumption that because Sony had a Fan Faire in N.O. last fall that Atlanta would be OK...Let me set some facts before I continueAs a former police officer I can tell you I know all about the problems of the Atlanta Metro area. I know how woefully understaffed the Atlanta P.D. is. I know how WOEFULLY underfunded the Atlanta P.D. is. I have several friends who are current and former law enforcement officers on the Atlanta Police Department, Dekalb County Sheriff's Office, and many in small departments in Fulton and other counties in the metro area. Many still live in Atlanta or it's burbs...I left years ago...and it's only gotten worse.Atlanta's violent crime stats are 7 times the national average. Now I realize that you cannot view the same FBI stat pages that I have access to. As a former member of a police agency and the son of a Emergency dispatch center director I can see stats and demos that others cannot...but they can had...and if I were planning a convention where I was promoting MY companies product and it was going to be attended by 3000+ people from all over the country, I certainly would be asking for this information from someone OTHER than the Bureu of Tourism in the city I was considering...Of course they are going to give less than honest answers....It's their job to promote their tourism...A lot of this information is available right here on the net.Ok lets put it in terms that business people need to understand..If someone were to go out and stumble into a bad area, or some bad person stumbled into a good area, and the convention attendee got serously hurt or killed...well lets just say I can see large cash awards in a civil court proceeding..YES I know they attended of their own free will..But The company holding the convention did not explain to their atendees that they were holding the convention in the 3rd most dangerous city in the country. The company holding the convention did NOT tell people where the bad areas of the city were. The Company holding the convention did not tell their attendees that they were over 10 times more likely to get killed in Atlanta then they are in NYC (which is a true stat)I hope nothing happens..I truly do, but why set your company up for possible litigation...I mean if the Fan Faire were held in a city that wasn't on the list it would make it MUCH harder to hold Sony responsible...And even though in reality it wouldn't be Sony's fault, this is 2005 where Jury members love to see big corporations pay out millions in punitive and compensatory compensation...it just isn't worth the chance...

My brother lives in las vegas, and right behind the strip and around it, is one of the most dangerous places in Las Vegas... People don't notice, because they keep the tourist areas pretty secure. But if you were to stumble away from the hotel there it could be very bad as well. I wouldn't recommend wandering in any town that you are not familiar with. Stick to the hotels. There are dangerous areas everywhere. Heck I live in the St. Louis area, and lets face it, down down is not a very nice place to be.. but that is where all the hotels, stadiums and events are, but they are pretty safe, as they have good security when events are going on.

Olavf,

That web site is very biased, one more than one count, too.

First of all, it counts only numbers of crimes. Nobody likes any crime, but I'd much rather have my car stolen than be murdered. The web site doesn't distinguish between them.

Secondly, it makes a huge mistake with Atlanta. Atlanta itself doesn't have a big population, so if you divide by the number of citizens, it makes the crime rate look bigger than it really is. Notice how it has Atlanta's population below 500,000? That's absurd, and it's a result of the fact that most of the population in Atlanta lives outside the downtown area. Do the same thing for any other big city and you'd find the same effect. It's just that most big cities have annexed the suburbs and effectively diluted the crime rate with a higher population.

To see it in a realistic perspective, take a look at the crime ranking by Metropolitan Area (the bottom chart). This takes into account the entire population. Atlanta doesn't even appear on the list! Las Vegas is number 8. New Orleans is number 5.

Viewed this way, Atlanta looks a whole lot better.

To those that want to put Atlanta down so that we don't get a chance to be represented with a Fan Faire, I say it's high time we got one. We have a huge EQ fan base here. We work our butts off, so we don't get to make it to the Las Vegas or San Diego events. We have a great city to host it with, so come on down and get some Southern Hospitality, EQ Style!

I love how they say okay everyone wants atlanta but they choose an entirely different date. /boggle. No offense but the last two fan fairs seemed to just thrown together as an afterthought with not much advertising etc. No wonder the numbers were down. Its a shame because having attended 6 of them I do really enjoy coming to them, its just disappointing whats been going on with them lately. Salomea

Having lived in atlanta, go to school in atlanta, and i work in atlanta i must say that calling it the most dangerous city is ridiculous. Its actually not that bad... ESPECAILLY in the central tourist zone near Underground Atlanta and where the nice hotels and such are. THe new cheif of police hasnt been here long enough to make a real assesment... that and no one really likes him. I say give atlanta a chance! the south deserves a chance to host the fan faire!!

JMO

Eeni Meeniemineymo
Fellowship of the Faithful
--Xegony--

For those that partake... a huge FREE Skatepark downtown, and tons of em around the city, AWSOME restraunts, its a 24 hour city...can get almost anything ya want whenever ya want it.. and for the FEBRUARY date, the last 2-3 winters have been EXTREMLY Mild, most of last winter i drove around with the top down. Denver wont cost ya an arm and a leg... and i dont mean the air fair and hotel loggings, i mean food, entertainment, traveling around town & all those little things. We're the home of SOUTH PARK, Co. but its about a 90 min drive outta the city... There's TONS of art and culture here, and plenty to do... but the real reason i want it to be here is, to MEET ALL OF YOU!!!

I would go to them, lets say, New York City???? open that checkbook of yours and lets get this thing started, Manhattan is a great place, or even Albany, I would go if there was one there, GA is even too far away from me, a flight there from long Island is way too much that i would pay, plus accomodations and such, its not like i am going to mardi gras, trip and hotel for 6 days cost me 400, drinking expenses were a little high, but thats what you get when you get up at 10 AM and drink to 5AM pass out for 5 hours and do it again!!!!

But why on earth would you even mention a skatepark when the time frame is the middle of February? Won't they all be turned into snowboard parks instead? My vote is for Austin, because I live in Texas and I could drive it. Of course there's no way I'll be able to afford to go anyway, so I don't know why I'm worried about it.And I couldn't find the vote thingie Bix was talking about.

Just to put a little bug in the ear of SOE... maybe another Venue to look at might be like Knoxville, TN... yeah we aren't a HUGE city but they have some nice convention area's, cheaper hotels, some great food... Plus not the major traffic jams like in Atlanta and stuff. Not to mention it might be cheaper.
