View Full Version : Breaking Line of Sight doesn't stop spells from being cast?!?

Topic!

It's kind of confusing that spells travel through walls but I'd like to hear opinions on this.

I'm fine with it. For one, there's at least 10 different ways to CC someone... and for two, it's not really fair that melee can constantly move while fighting which could constantly break LoS and constantly interrupt the caster opponent. Sounds pretty crappy to me. Also, if I manage to break your LoS while you're casting a 0.5 second CA, it doesn't interrupt you.

Pretty sure my ranger doesn't get interrupted if someone runs behind a tree or something, but you could be right.

As long as the server side LoS check passed when the spell/ca started casting, it will land.

More specifically, blues will go right thru walls and around corners (if the target is in the range).

I do agree EQ2 would be a better and more fun game if LoS was a bit more robust and effective mechanic, but eh, it is what it is.

I'd love it if 50% cover meant 50% damage reductions for example. But its either your in "line of feet" or you are not.

Being able to take cover would be a handy ability ... but that'd be one heck of a challenging mechanic to implement given the wacky LOS rules EQ2 uses. (Line of Feet, like it!) If they start to cast on you, better get up an interrupt--fast.

The one thing I find slightly vexing about the whole issue is when a wizard is casting some long cast nuke like eci's frozen wrath or whatever, you hit evade early when he still has more than a second or so left to finish casting, and he'll still hit you with it. even though he theoretically has no target.

come on guy.. this is kind of silly.

Line of sight is used to "prevent" a player from casting a spell, using a combat ability or casting a heal. If you are behind a wall, tree, whatever... a player cannot "use" an ability, cause they can't see you. Once you peek out and there is no line of site issues, an ability can be casted/used on you. If it's a long cast time and you hide, it's to late... they used the spell/ability while they saw you... The act of casting is the ability in progress and it's going to land on you. Think of it as if the ability is locked on you.

A detarget or taunt is not going to save you either, but the ability was "used" on you. You're options are of many... take the hit or interupt, mez, stun, knock back, etc...

Imagine if abilities (all abilities, not just spells) were landing on where the cast ended. Deagro means you nuke nothing... tuants mean you end up always damaging the tank. It would be an unplayable system and would effect heals as well.

It's an intentional mechanic that was made in PvP to prevent the "shoot and hide" and/or "Run Away/Run Back"process that was prevalent in some zones.

Basically, a player could shoot/hide/shoot/hide/shoot/kill (or shoot/run away/run back/shoot/run away/runback/shoot/kill), while a caster would get interrupted/interrupted/interrupted/die because they'd start a cast and have it fizzle and be left with no recourse for ranged attack offense.

It was also implemented for runners. Too many runners could outrun/outreach snares/roots/spells before a spell could finish. Making it impossible to get kills from some people (before forced combat).
