In general, player characters are more powerful (and more interesting) then the avatars. Each avatar has an auto-attack and 4 arts. Depending on the avatar 1-3 of the arts are mostly useless. If you really want to play an avatar the Duhjalm Sentinel is one of the sturdier ones. It is dropped from various giants around Norrath

editted for typos

I'd say just experiment. The devs have been periodically rebalancing playing with characters so it could still change again. It also may depend on your character's level, class, and degree of "uberness".

Last time I tried my unoptimized level 71 Berserker she was weak compared to the avatars playing alone, and strong when with her Mystic merc.

I personally get a kick out of playing the avatars. They may have only 3 or 4 usuable spells, but if I play a different class from my character then its a change of pace for me.
