View Full Version : AB Server at Medium? What is going on with the player populations?

I go through the character creator fairly regularly to see the server pops, and have noticed that AB has dropped down to medium at some of the times when it always used to be at high, which left Freeport as the only High pop server.

What the heck is going on? The Euro fiasco? Summer? Other?

If AB is getting lower, and my server seems to be doing the same, maybe it is time SOE helped to mitigate the damage.

Two things they could possibly do off the top of my head:

1) Allow a period of free transfers, with possible merger of the smallest remaining servers.

2) Fix the Dungeon finder:

A) At the very least fix it so that it works better for making groups from the existing server populations

B) Alternatively, add a method for cross server grouping

I am also a little concerned about population, but I do know summer can take a big hit out of the population.

I also think the overall game population will be improved by the PSS1 deal, but it's probably not helping any right now.

I think DC Universe did a great job with their megaserver idea and I wouldn't mind seeing that here. I think character name preservation and making sure contested content was kept in balance are the only major issues SOE would have to resolve.

The "in between" option on MegaServers and the Status Quo is expanded cross-server grouping. But yeah, Servers are just really big instances. Its nice that for every server there's someone who can discover an item for the first time, or that there can be a top dog guild on each one, but so few people are really impacted by those capabilities. The game as a whole would be much better served by the Megaserver concept. Groups would be easier to find and doomsday prophecies would be less frequent as population shifts would be far less noticeable. When EQ2X launched, it sounded like there was some sort of theoretical limit that could be hit with Freeport, so I'm guessing the current infrastructure wouldn't fully support this without a pile of work.

Maybe players are taking a break from the game? Or are too busy with RL stuff. I finally found a job 4 weeks ago so I can only spend an hour or 2 a couple days a week in-game myself.

Summer vacations, the Steam and Amazon Summer Sales, etc. You'll see a pickup in populations after summer ends.

The player base for EQ is not growing enough to mitigate the people leaving for summer things and lets be honest about SS, you really think that was enough content to keep us happy untill the next content update in November?

There is always a significant drop in population over the summer months, so that is normal. However, we are in a position in which we have the least-ever relevant content at the end-game, so I am certain that lots of players are getting burned out pretty quickly. Heck, I'm not really playing much these days, and I've been active since launch. I wouldn't worry too much, though. The new GU should give us a short-term population bump as people check out the changes, and some of those are bound to relapse, at least temporarily.

My subscription ended the 16th and i did not renew it due to the ProSiebenSat insult to European customers. Maybe I am not the only European who holds his/her breath atm on how this 'deal' will be finalized and/or already decided to venture of to a game developer that values its customers equally.

I know I haven't been logging in much out of boredom. There just isn't anything to do on my main characters because they're already level 92 and the content at that level is just sooo tiny. I've been playing minecraft and swtor while I wait for more eq2 content.

So I'll be back on full time eventually, I just hope the next release is more than 3-4 weeks worth of content.

Freeport has been getting a lot of people transfering to it from ab and particularly oasis. Between that and summer time (even my guild notices I log in less and its not because I am bored, its because its gorgeous outside and I am doing family things at beaches parks BBQ's ect)

Freeport also has a Regular influx of new players. Yesterday 25 of them joined my guild. thats a typical number for those who join it on the weekends. I think it because people see freeport as high and ab as medium so they choose the higher pop server.
