When I equip an item that gives ability mod (such as Robe of Evil Eyelashes +102 AB), some spells such as Theorems only receive partial benefit, while other spells such as Ultraviolet Beam V receive full benefit in both PvE and PvP.

My ability mod is low, and is not capping my spells.

I spent a good chunk of money re-gearing my 39 illy with AB, and sadfaced a little when I saw the much lower than expected benefit. It seems to be all over the place... I can equip 316 AB and some AAs and spells increase by like 5 points, and that could very will be a difference of int between gear.

I keep thinking something else has to be raising my base damage first, so AB has no room under cap... or I'm just totally missing something about how AB works.

Ability mod caps at half the spells damage after potency is applied. Smaller spells often don't receive the full value if you have a lot of ability mod - whereas Ice Comet can benefit from quite a lot of ability mod.

I would have thought a 7 year vet with 3500+ posts would have known that AB cannot be applied past 50% of a spells base damage + Pot.

I am going to post again about a long standing BUG with ability mod in this game. While ability mod does cap at 50 percent of the ability after potency, the display tip when you hover over an ability, caps at 50 percent of an ability BEFORE potency, but after primary stat modification, so if AGI is increasing your abilities by 58 percent, it will still effect the tool tip ability mod increase. Remember this is a visual ONLY bug, if you actually check combat logs directly against what it should be in real calculations there is no error.

My potency and pvp potency is less than 15%.

Also, I'm a 6 year vet with 3500- posts... just sayin ;p

You aren't very clear on what items you're using to test, if you are swapping items or merely equipping an item into an otherwise empty slot, so with that in mind... is it possible the item that you're equipping with all that ability mod has less potency than the item you've replaced, thus the tool till will make it look like you aren't recieving the bonus, when you are, its just less than you were expecting due to the potency being lower?

You do know that ability mod works differently on reactives then it does on DD spells too right?

Theorems is a reactive, the ability mod is actually divided by 3 and then added to the trigger damage. You wouldn't get 100% of the ability mod added to each trigger.

I wonder then, if I gain an additional trigger from AA is the ability mod now divided by 4 and spread across all triggers?

I will have to take a closer look again, this time taking into account what you and Hennyo said.

For the record I am swapping the season one level 30 mage BG robe which has no potency or ability mod with Robe of Evil Eyelashes. I have also tried swapping out several pieces of gear (all pvp gear) with gear giving me 316 ability mod (and roughly the same int, but less potency and pvp potency), and not noticing anywhere near the results I expect.

Anyway, I'll have another look and if anyone needs me to fill in more info, just ask.
