I think that my FPS is very slow compared to what I hear from other people on system very similar to mine, being able to get 60+ fps in Extreme Quality(which I'll call ExQ)

My system is:

Intel core i7 920 OCed @ 3.3 ghz (i know it's 3 years old but even then I knew someone who was getting very decent FPS with the same setup)

Asus P6T Deluxe V2 MB

12 gig CORSAIR DOMINATOR 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TR3X6G1600C8D

evga Geforce gtx 580 1.5 gig

Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Case: COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Advanced RC-932-KKN5-GP Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case with USB 3.0, Black Interior and Four Fans-1x 230mm front RED LED, 1x 140mm rear, 1x 230mm top, and 1x 230mm side

CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V v2.2 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

I get 15-30 fps solo in ExQ, however. I play in windowed mode so that I can do other things while playing aswell. In groups it drops down to unplayable. This problem is only in eq2, so this is very tricky. I know someone else that had the same build I did and was having 3x the FPS. What could I be missing?

Make sure you have desktop composition "on" and windows glass off - past that do you notice a dramatic difference in fullscreen opposed to windowed mode?

TSR-MattG wrote:

Make sure you have desktop composition "on" and windows glass off - past that do you notice a dramatic difference in fullscreen opposed to windowed mode?

Desktop comp was on already, I tried turning the glass off (forgot to mention that i'm on windows 7, but good catch), I tried these and no difference in fps. Full screen is a tiny bit better, but nothing close to what I hear from other people. Any other ideas?

Also was looking at my windows expiereience index.. probably doesn't mean anyything but on a scale of 1.0 to 7.9, 7.4 in processor, mem 7.6, HD 7.4, others are 7.9. So that tells me that my system should be pretty decent, yet I'm just pulling only 60 fps in ExP settings, and i hear reports of 100 on ExQ settings on people with similar set up.

"I play in windowed mode so that I can do other things while playing aswell." Try not doing any other thing except everquest and see if that's better, shut everything else down.

Another test is with the UI..hit F10 twice to remove the UI.. with one of my computers the game runs very fast, perfect without the UI...soon as the UI is back the FR boggyness is back.

very frustrating, it's like the old days when they added jaggedpine..'laggedpine' lol, in everquest 1. only upside is soe doesn't charge any money

Fps doesn't change with ui gone.

i'm running i5 2500k and 460GTX with 8G ram on ExQ in freeport and got around from 20 ~ 40 FPS ( i still think its low compare to others ) depending locations , so i usually i run HP only so i can get a smooth playable experience so tbh , your cpu and display should be better than mines so check your manager window see if anything( double check on your software ) is sucking up your cpu resource , or perhaps your IS ( internet security )

distance from the server (EQ2's server) might make a difference. when i run those upload/download checks to ensure that FIOS is delivering as promised, the further away the location, the less the upload/download speed is. (i.e., if i pick a location thats one state away, they are delivering as promised. if i pick a state that's on the other side of the country, they are not.) perhaps being further away from california than your friend is part of what you are seeing? (not sure, could that be affecting your FPS?)

I neglected to write down my fps from before and after, so can only go with *feelings* here, but I feel I am getting less fps on even lwoer settings then with my earlier card.

Now, as I understand it, EQ2 is CPU dependent, not so much graphics card dependent. A few weeks ago, I upgraded my computer and got great FPS improvements (enough so that I'd raised my graphics pretty high in game), but kinda feel like all that was lost with the card change.

Since i changed the videocard, FPS drop at any quality level, inclusive less graphics quality than before.

As with other games(also in the same CPU) the FPS increment has been noticeable, the problem is not CPU or the GPU, is, or driver(hard to think becase speedycerv has another branch and a MUCH better videocard) or game.

Agreed, which is why I was surpirsed the new video card made such a difference.

Can you give me a screenshot (or multiple if needed) of your settings in the nvidia control panel? I'm wondering if this may be as simple as a bad setting in there.

I reinstalled the full system and the problem persist.

Also wrote in another thread that the system starts to HALT(complete lockup) when i play EQ2 http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...49

There's a fix coming early next week for that.

@Tiggress - Desktop composition controls whether or not 3d apps are rendered when they're not "in-focus" (your currently selected window) - this helps a lot with load balancing and swithching between applications, as well as 2boxing. Windows Glass controls the transparency of windows, it can be a bit of a system intensive feature so I reccomend disabling it if you're running in windows visa/7 and experiencing lag.
