The user above is likely correct and you may need the DirectX9.0 runtime installed.

Click here to get it from Microsoft!

I got this error today also after I clicked play from the launcher and the game never loaded. I started up the launcher a second later and hit play and all was well.

Just gremlins I suppose.

My game started giving me those errors as well, AFTER i loaded up the auto up-dating EQ2 maps program. After I took it off my system, I no longer get that error message and kicked out of game. Just a thought you might need to try that as well. I am going to play around and try the Manual updating eq2maps instead and see if I get the same / different error message. I will let you know

This happens on my machine also. I had done a re-install of Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit and it started happening. It happens when EQ2 is running and I launch ACT or Ventrilo. I am also using the ATI 12.1 drivers. I downloaded Directx 9.0c and it still was happening. So I downloaded the dev edition with ALL the addons and I still have issues.

Well, still getting 4 fatal error's with the above message everyone time i play the game without ANY 3rd party apps. I use default everything. So, should i try rolling my drivers back to last years model?

Any word on this? I crash especially hard when in the city of Freeport, entering a guild hall etc. Even on the lowest possible settings for the game/graphics. And this ONLY started happening when freeport was redone, then has gotten worse since the AoD expansion.

I am having the same issue almost everytime i a trying to start the game. Sometimes i need to restart the game more than 10 times before i can login. The odd thing is the issue only occurs when i try to play on Valor server. There are no issues when i play on the Testcopy server. Since the testcopy installation is a copy of my usual installation it looks like a server related problem?

Just to be sure this is not caused by external factors, if you're experiencing a crash similar to this please try these steps:

Make sure you are not running any programs on your windows taskbar. If the problem persists, you should try running your system under a clean boot as this will prevent any hidden programs from loading.

To disable background programs:

1. Select the START button.2. Select RUN, then type in "msconfig" (for Vista, type msconfig in the search bar at the bottom of the Start Menu)3. Press OK4. Select the STARTUP tab.5. Click the DISABLE ALL button.6. Hit apply and then OK. Restart the computer and try the game again.

If you are still experiencing the same issue, please reply back.

It actually might be worth a try (if you're experiencing it exactly as described) to nuke your whole UI folder - then reinstall your custom (maybe even an alternative to drums like profit) just to see if that solves the issue more permanently. it sounds like something in your UI is bad and causing problems, and you're "forcing" your way around it. This should give us a fresh start.

Good luck getting an answer. There hasn't been one since last month. The way i got rid of the error's was to start at the worst graphics level in game, and work my way up each one till it crashed again. SOE did something to the game, but of course will blame it on our systems.

I have the same issue pointing to the same file location. This is definitely a bug in SOE's code. It only happens when I am trying to launch another program when EQ2 is already launched (usually ACT, Raidhub, Ventrillo, etc.). I am runing Windows Ultimate x64.

The fact that this is pointing to a file path that does not exist and that it is consistent amoung multiple customers should clue tech support into the fact that this is not a client side configuration issue. I have searched all files on all of my drives for any reference to this path. It does not show up anywhere. Which means this path is embeded into code somewhere. I could do a binary search but since the path is likely encoded I am not sure that would help. I would humbly suggest that SOE search the game code for that path and see if it shows up.

I really would apprecate getting this fixed. It has been happening for a few months now and it is getting anoying. Nothing like being on a raid, realizing you forgot to launch much needed tools to time jousts, etc. and crashing when you run them.

Have just missed my entire raid trying to fix this to no avail. Thanks SOE.

I have been having the same problem for the last week or two and have been unable to find a fix for it. Updated and fixed everthing I could as suggested on this thread but still no go. Only have problems with this game and no other online games I am currently playing.

Well, in a way, I'm glad I'm not the only person this is happening to, which would point to the seemingly overall consensus that this problem is on SOE's end.

My entire computer crashed when I updated my LON files (just returning after being gone for 2 years.. gee, this makes me want to stay..), and I had to reinstall EVERYTHING, right down to my motherboard drivers. So after getting everything installed again today and spending a couple of hours downloading EQ2, I was excited to play again.. only to get this annoying error.

I cannot log into the game at all. I hit the "Play" button from the launcher, wait about ten seconds, and then gets this "direct x 9 render device" fatal error (the same one everyone else has been posting..) that shuts everything down. Granted, I haven't tried restarting the launcher ten times, but since my fiance is logging into his account and playing right next to me.. it's just annoying. SOE may only get one month outta' me, because I'm not paying to get an error message.

Please fix it, SOE.

I get this myself:

I guess I should submit a petition in-game too? This PC was built last Wednesday and I just started playing again but I get this issue randomly. Twice so far on two different characters on two different servers. I use DirectX 11 and have a quad-core PC.

It does not matter if you have a directx 11 certifieid subsytem or not, the game engine is using DX9 runtime calls. DX 9 was the last version of directx that was backwards compatible, starting with Vista and DX10 the backwards compatible capability was removed. You need the runtime modules. The install app is smart enough to only load what is needed
