It's been about 5 or 6 years since my friends and I have played this game. Two of us are set on making a wizard, inquisitor, and a 3rd toon yet to be decided. My main concern for our 3rd member will be usefullness in a group setting while still being needed in raids if / when we get that far.

Would a tank class be a better choice or perhaps coming from an EQ1 mindset are their pet classes that could tank group stuff in a pinch and be viable in a raid setting? Open to pretty much anything at this point it's all new again to us.

Another thing does evil vs good matter much? Can we still group together at lower levels? I recall being limited at low levels due to starting points and quests no being available to both sides, but not so much end game. However, that was years ago and end game was like level 70 is that still the same? lol

to break into an established forcre a Trio? What types of classes does your friend like? Cliched as it sounds, enjoyment will flame out a lot faster if you're playing a class for need and not enjoyment. For need you still can't go wrong with a Bard or Enchanter for group and/or raid. Tank would be a nice choice for you as a trio, but it's hardest for a new tank to break into an established raidforce.

Good and evil is almost meaningless. You can all make characters in different starting areas and with the open world travel bells all meet in Timmorous Deep and have everyone be able to get every quest regardless of alignment

After that each of you get a different merc to "fill your grp out. The inqy get a dirge. you get a troub and the tank get a mystic or defiler. Thats tons of heals/utility between the three of you. you could ditch the shaman merc for a brig merc for added debuffs/dps. Breaking into raiding is another story and will come down to how well each of you play your toons and the needs of the raid force you are apping too. There are alot of starving casual raid forces that would prob pick up that trio excepting tanks have a harder time finding a raid slot due to limited need and expectation that the tank is gonna know their stuff well as wellas everyone ahving a better geared tank alt and half of them wanting a tank spot.

As an alternative your third member can roll a brig or swashy. This would make the game alot more interesting for them. Rogues can spec into a light tank duty to help level the three of you in which case the brig should get a tank merc or shaman merc and you will all blow up low lvl dungeons easy - get alot of AA early - especially the brig if s/he tank specs.

A necro tank pet/mage pet with tainted heal AA lines can tank any zone but the player needs a firm understanding of necro aa and limitiations (near none once the class is mastered).

It's been 5-6 years since you played?EQ2 is essentially a new game for you then. I would not start with a tank character, as you are expected to know the zones, know how to tank, know some of the buffs of other classes.

I would roll some combination of mage, scout, and priest, and then once you have experienced some groups at level 90, then consider rolling a tank. Scout is the best on-the-job training to learn how to tank without rolling a tank and learning the *very* hard way.

I would say w/ Inq and Wiz you would probably want a troub (great buffs - always wanted in raids - it's a utility class and won't parse up there w/ the t1 dps) It really depends what playstyle your friend prefers. You could also go with an illusionist. They are also a great utility class and are always sought in raids. If played well they can dps rather well and would provide nice buffs.

I would agree that a tank would be very useful for your group while leveling, but it would be nearly impossible to get a tanking spot in a raid guild. There are very few tank positions available and most guilds want experienced/geared tanks to fill those roles.

I think using a merc tank would be your best bet.

He could also play a beastlord - which is the new class and is highly overpowered. They are pretty much in a dps class of their own, but can also switch stances to heal or replenish power. Most players feel the nerf bat looming, but who knows if or when that will happen.

You've all provided a lot of information to absorb, thank you!

So far the tank we were leaning towards (Paladin initially) has now been ruled out. It would be a class that'd interest him and he'd probably enjoy, but he hates nothing worse than trying to get into a raid(s) that has no need for him. Also with mercs added since we all last played it sounds like we could easily get a tank merc to do that job at least while leveling.

An enchanter class sounds like a nice option, but after years of him doing that in EQ1 it's off the table. However, Conj / Necro classes have a strong appeal having a pet tank while still being able to provide some added dps. As well a rogue class appeals to him and troubador although probably a little less.

After around 12 years of MMO'ing together I don't think there's an archetype / class he hasn't played and enjoyed excluding healing and pure crowd control classes.

Again thanks for the info it was quite helpful.
