Hey there,

BackgroundI used to play Everquest2 daily, back in the day after release. I played on-and-off up until 2009 and then stopped playing. During all these years of play I have never had any sort of problem like this. I have recently returned to the game but am having some problems that are inhibiting me from playing (and yes, keeping me from renewing my subscription).

IssuesUpon logging into my own account, I can make a new character and join the world. However, the game is extremely choppy, but not connection-wise, graphical-wise. It's very annoying and makes the game unplayable.

Upon logging into a close friends account, I can sometimes make it into the game, although the game has frozen quite a few times on the character selection screen. If I do make it into the game, the game is extremely choppy (much like above) to the extent where it is unplayable. After anywhere from 5-60 seconds of this coppiness the game will freeze completely. I can still move the EQ2 cursor around, but cannot do anything. CTRL+ALT+DEL even seems to be disabled or frozen here and I have to manually restart my computer.

DetailsI started off running the game on balanced (like I always did when I used to play). In spite of these issues, I've turned the graphics to extreme performance, cut off the sound, lowered the resolution, etc. However, the freezes still happen everyime I log in.

I've reformatted my computer just a couple of weeks before reinstalling Everquest and it shouldn't be bogged down with much.

My computer is a bit outdated (2.4ghz processor, 1gb ram, Radeon x800pro) but has always played Everquest2 extremely smooth in the past.

ThanksMany thanks for looking into this for me. I really would like to play again, especially now that beastlords-my favourite Everquest class-have returned!

DXDIAG------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 12/21/2011, 09:54:15 Machine name: CYNOSURE-A72992 Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.100216-1441) Language: English (Regional Setting: English)System Manufacturer: NVIDIA System Model: AWRDACPI BIOS: Phoenix -
I cleaned out some hard drive space for paging (got it up to 8GB) and the problem still persists.

It happens everytime I log into the game.

Check your CPU Shadows - it's in options under the display part - and then you might have to click the 'advanced' button - somewhere in there it gives an option between CPU and GPU shadows - try to flip the setting or maybe turn them off altogether.

I have a decent system; albeit an older Video Crad though (8600 GTS) and if I use one of the specific shadow settings it will throttle my frame rate to a literal crawl...

I forget what the options are and I'm not at home to check in EQ2 - but there should be two - maybe three options. Something about 'volume' in relation to the shadows, sorry I can't be more specific... but hopefully you can find what I'm talking about.

Also - Driver Date/Size: 2/10/2010 23:45:14, 325120 bytes

There is likely a newer video driver out for your system? Might wanna update it too.

At worst, you can update the video driver, move all your settings down to minimal and see if Frame Rate is good - then start ramping back up settings by doing just a couple at a time, so you remember what you changed - until you find where it slows down.

Oh and Shaders too - if I try to enable the 3.0 Shaders on my GTS8600 - I will just crash, and end up having to edit the INI file to fix it - check your shader settings too.

I appreciate your attempt at helping!

The shadows are already disabled. In my attempt to check this (logging into the EQ2 character creation screen), I had just made it to the shadow options when the game froze and I had to manually restart my computer yet again.

The shader3 model is also disabled in the ini, as far as I can tell.

The drivers were updated 2 weeks ago; I believe that was the final release of drivers for this card as it's pretty outdated.

I've had this exact same problem starting about the same time. I've tried everything, new video drivers, reformatting, defragging. Nothing seems to make it better and I'm glad, sort of, that it's happening to others besides myself.

I log into the game and sometimes it stutters and freezes from the very beggining and sometimes I get a couple hours of game free stuttering before it starts.

I'm at a loss what to try next. This is my seventh year playing EQ2 and I've never had a problem like this. Just for the last couple months. Did a patch change something graphic wise?

I have to say that I'm about to give up on attempting to fix this and just move on.

The problem is still persisting after 2 reformats, numerous driver reinstalls, Everquest2 reinstalls, patches, etc.

Sorry about my absence. I have a recommendation for you.

Windows XP SP3. Go get that right away. Once you have done that, you may need to re-update DX9 using the instructions below. I would also recommend installing the latest drivers for your video device after that, even if you already have the latest just re-install them.

Please download and run the file linked in the article below. This is a self-extracting executable file that will prompt you to select a folder for extraction. Create a folder on your desktop and direct it to that folder. Once complete, open that folder and run the DXSETUP file to start the actual update itself.

[DX9] June 2010 - http://www.microsoft.com/download/e...ls.aspx?id=8109

Since my last post I've bought a new video card, a new ethernet card and replaced all my modem cables and the frezing still persists. It starts for me if I change zones or switch to a different alt. It doesn't constantly freeze up but once or twice every time I change zones for 5 to 10 seconds. Also if I change to a different section of my guild hall will cause frezzing too.

I have a AMD phenonII x6 1075T processor 3GHz, ATI HD 6870 Video card, windows 7 64 bit version and 12 GB of ram. The freezing has only recently started, since November if that also helps.
