About every 3rd time I try to play the game, I get the following error. Choosing any of the 3 options crashes the game. The only way to get out is to close the launcher and restart it, trying to just click play again will give the same problem.

I moved the directory as you mentioned, however I am still having the same problem. Every 3rd or 4th time I load the launcher I get that error and the game crashes. And unless i have a virus undetectable by any virus software, I don't have a virus.

You may need to google for instructions with your version of Windows on how to take ownership of a folder.

I had this exact issue, started the day the servers came up when the xpac launched, It has not done this since the hotfix on friday but now I am just crashing completly (about half the time) when I go through the patcher. All eq2 files are up to date with the latest launcher. No virus and no malware, scanned with malewarebytes and McAfee. I run in admin mode as I always have, nothing on my system has changed. I have tried everything short of a full re-install of the entire game. Something with the patch last tuesday has done something to cause this. I get in the game just fine if I by-pass the patcher and use the .exe file.

It's a file association or privilege issue.

Make sure you take ownership of the folder if you've had it for aw hile through windows reinstalls/upgrades.
The game is in my public folder. I mean come on this is frustrating, everything was perfect, no issues till this major patch and you say that it cannot be that. If nothing in the patch or brand new launchpad (the only things that have changed) can be causing this then please tell me another thing to try and fix this issue??? Again, I have the latest and greatest files and launchpad, no viruses or malware, eq2 is installed in my public folders, win7 full version was on this machine before eq2 was so its not a reinstall/upgrade issue. I just do not get it.....

You can open a support ticket with dxdiag/msinfo files and we can review what else you have behind the scenes that might cause this.

I also have installed nothing new other than what your game has installed, in months, on my computer. I never had this issue before until this last Tuesday as well. I relocated my game directlry as was first instructed, but it didn't stop this error from occuring about every 3rd or 4th time I run the launcher. If you have windows shut down the crashed game and click Play again, it'll always crash again with that error. The only way to not get the error is to quit the launcher and then run it again, but it will still give that error every 3rd or 4th time.

It is frustrating when something that has worked for years suddenly is changed and doesn't work and you guys tell us it's something we have running/changed. I understand that quite often that might be the case, but to just say that and the drop the whole ball in our court is kind of lame, honestly. And in this instance, it's very wrong. I don't know why moving the directory would have fixed such a problem anyway, it shouldn't even matter what directory a game is sitting in as long as the game was installed to that directory so the game knows where to look for its data. Then again, I realize Windows is flat out stupid in itself.

Please do pass on this bug to whoever might look into it further. While it's not game brekaing it is very frustrating. Thanks.

Edited to add: Also the disk/drive the error is asking for is not a disk or drive I have, it's something related to what was programmed into the launcher with this last update. Find that and you'll find the bug I'll bet.

I have no idea what you mean when you ask me if I'm referring to a G drive. I don't know what a G drive is. I guess I'll just suffer through repeated attempts to load the game before it loads without crashing, or until the bug is accidentaly fixed. I have not a clue what you mean when you say I have to take posession of the directory and I have no idea what an MSINFO is either. I should have just clicked install, and had it install, and had it work, and if it doesn't, then I guess I have other MMOs I can go back to for now. Thanks for your time.

I searched on deviceharddisk3dr3 and got interesting results. Here is a quote from a user who asked in the MS forums about this exact error.

"I had a similar problem. The error started popping up randomly and I do not know why. To find what the problem is go to (win 7) Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management and scroll down until you find the drive that is tripping the error. Unplugging what was in that drive fixed my problem. For me it turned out to be a printer. Others have had issues with external hard drives or other memory devices."

For what it's worth, errors accessing devices in the format deviceharddiskxxdrxx seem to be awfully common. It seems that Windows sometimes goes hunting ghosts and you get these errors. Generally speaking, it does not seem to be due to bugs in the program running at the time. It is possible that Windows is reacting incorrectly to something that the program is doing.

Hope this helps figure out where the problem really is.

-= Therendil =-

I was getting this error, approximately 8-10 times in the past week. After finally reading the forums here, I moved my EQ2 files from where they were (existing peacefully, apparently, till now) to the public folder mentioned by TSR-Joshua M. Still no change. However, now I have a bigger and worse problem. Now I can't get past the log-in phase at all. I get a Fatal Error and something like this: "verify="G:liveeq2frameworkcoredevicesDirectX9RenderDevice. cpp(1941): DirectX Error. (D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE)" Game was working as intended until I logged off about 0130 today. Then I had a problem with a casual game which crashed and shut down my computer. After that, this error showed up repeatedly and I couldn't get into EQII at all. I tried installing new graphics drivers. I tried reinstalling DirectX. Nothing works. I'm really not a very technical person, and when I tried to download DirectX 9.0c, which is older than what my computer supposedly has, I wasn't sure what folder to put it into. (I was unable to locate the later version of it, though Microsoft insisted it was there. It's probably hidden.) I finally tried re-downloading the game (I've been with EQII for over seven years, and I have all the disks, but didn't use them), but I managed to get the same exact error. Please tell me you can shed some light on this problem. I finally have time off to play, and not being able to is so frustrating. I will edit this to add the dxdiag once I figure out how to do one.
Been having the same issue, so has my husband. Happened to both of us on 3 different machines (his old and his new, plus my machine) right after a patch (and the forced move to Launcher 4). Launcher 4 has been an absolute headache for me.

Edit: I've taken to just bypassing the launcher altogether. As long as I skip the launcher, I never get this error and can login just fine. Since I never had this trouble using the small blue station launcher and I never have the trouble if I bypass the launcher it seems to me that L4 is what's causing me and my husband the problem.

how are you bypassing the launcher... I've had this issue since the new launcher as well... re-installed the game, now the game just closes randomly. Very fustrating... I can only imagine how fustrating this is for those that have less patients...
