Hello,

Just opened support ticket #111208-001841. The game seems to intermittently crash at the "loading entities" or "creating entities." I can log in 5-10 times in a row with no problem, and then the client will crash 2-3 times in a row.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Are you using shader 3? If yes, disable it and try to reproduce the issue.

We're tracking some problems right now and I just want to sort you properly.

Lets clear out the cache/configuration settings first then we'll move on.

You may want to make backups and then delete the following files and folders:

cache folder

eq2_recent.ini

eq2_default.ini

EverQuest2.exe

eq2.ini

As well as the character specific files, these will appear as such:

Servername_CharacterName_EQ2_uisettings.ini

Stationname_characters.ini

To do this, please follow these directions:

1. First look for your EverQuest II Extended directory. You can find the default directory in (for Windows XP): C:Program FilesSonyEverQuest II (for Windows Vista/7): C:UsersPublicSony Online EntertainmentInstalled GamesEverQuest II

2. Click on MY COMPUTER and then proceed into local disk C:

3. Navigate your way to the default directory, or your chosen installation directory.

4. Next look for any files explained above and delete them.

5. Afterwards, please start EverQuest II to have these files re-downloaded by the patcher.

If deleting these files does not resolve your issue, you can restore your backed up files and folders and retain your hotkeys, contact lists, and display settings.

Can you tell me about the HD2201-1 sound device you have? Is this a separate sound device than the onboard audio? I do recommenddisabling one or both to start.

Felynx
12-08-2011, 05:45 PM

Hi Joshua,

The HD2201 sound device is the HD audio package that comes with the Nvidia gfx card. I went ahead and reinstalled my gfx driver package (after thoroughly uninstalling the old installation) and chose not to install those particular audio drivers. I also disabled the individual devices in the device manager. Things looked good for about 5-6 launches of the game, but on that 7th launch, it crashed again - at the same "entities" point.

Pursuing the audio avenue further, I uninstalled the Realtek drivers and let the standard windows drivers load up. With this configuration the game would fault at the "entities" point every time I tried to launch.

I have installed the original Realtek driver package that came with my system and the game has again launched. I am going to test it a bit and I will report back with the results.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Hi Joshua,

The problem still exists, and at a greater frequency now. I have all audio devices disabled and it has made no difference. When it crashes, it crashes at the"Entities" portion (either one).

Hopefully we can uncover something.

Thanks

I was able to log in 12 consectutive times with no fault. It locked on "creating entities" on the 13th try.

I have also locked and crashed one time in game. My character was in GFD and just standing still - a new Fae Beastlord.

One thing that I have noticed is that if I run EQ2Settings.exe and set it to "High Performance" I am able to get right back in and rattle up another 7-10 starts.

Another thing I have noticed is that if I select one of my "higher resolution" characters and log out, it will greatly increase the chances of having a glitched log in the next time around. I have also noticed that there are some subtle textural changes to some characters as I perform these log in tests. It almost seems like the textures are becoming corrupt from time to time.

I'm beginning to think that this is a settings issue as I usually run at very high display settings.

I hope all of this helps.

Hello,

Today morning after a small patch the game crashes every single time on Creating Entities screen when loading. Last I played the game was yesterday, had a raid. Game has been working without any issues so far. Today morning (9th of December) some update was downloaded, size was 141 Mb or so, and this update also changed the main executable file. After this update I cannot launch EQ2 anymore, it crashes every single time.

EDIT: I deleted the "Cache" folder and then tried to log in, and this time it worked. Hopefully this is the last time it happened.

It's still hit or miss for me.

Again, if it does bomb at "creating entities," I will then launch EQ2Settings.exe and select "High Performance." Although this does not change many settings, doing this does seem to allow me to log in.

This looks to be a shader issue - whether you are running shader 1 or 3.

**I have tried deleting the various "cache" directories, as well as deleting the detailed list of things mentioned earlier in this thread. These steps do not seem to permanently resolve the issue. I have also downloaded and installed a completely new copy of the game.

So far, the only thing that seems to reliably remedy this if you crash at the "loading entities" stage of logging in is to completely close out the game and launcher, navigate to your EQ2 folder, launch "EQ2Settings.exe" and select "High Performance."

This will roll back your settings and seems to then allow you to launch properly. I had launched via this method last night and did not ratchet up my settings once in game. I was able to play with no issues. This evening I launched in to the game, loaded my main, and adjusted the various graphical settings back to High Quality settings. I was able to play just fine until I needed to close the client. When I tried to log back in, it crashed at "loading entities." I immediately did the EQ2Settings thing above and was able to get back in with no problem.

I hope that this will help some folks get back into the game until this issue is patched/fixed.

Cheers

Update: I made a small batch file which deletes the following before game launch:

- assetcache folder and contents

- cache folder and contents

- logincache-us folder and contents

It also replaces the main intro music with some older intro music. I basically launch the launcher. Let it patch. Log in, and then, before clicking play, I run the batch file. This seems to have settled things down a bit and I have not crashed since. I am hopeful that this continues, but at the very least it has greatly lessened the frequency of the "entities" crash.

**spelling

With intermittent issues like this that do not occur across the board it takes a bit more time to narrow down the common denominators. We do apologize for the ongoing issue and I'll post an update as soon as I have one. In the meantime, clearing the Cache, LoginCache, and your (accountname)_characters.ini should alleviate some of the issue though there are multiple issues in play here.

It seems that if it does happen to crash when I go into my house, something gets or has become corrupted causing it to crash everytime afterwards, even if I restart the game and my house is the first zone it goes into. If I delete these folders it seems I can get in no problem.

After doing the following, I haven't had a crash since:

I initially deleted the cache, logincache-us and assetcache folders (I must have inadvertently run a streaming version of LaunchPad at some point) and then did a complete file scan with LaunchPad.

Now, I run LaunchPad for any patches and then close it manually. I do not click the green play button. I then typically verify the processes have stopped by checking Task Manager (the two processes use around 80mb of memory).

Start the game using my batch file shortcut which deletes the cache and logincache-us folders and then starts EverQuest2.exe

I noticed that while I was having so many crashes that when I would Exit the game, the LaunchPad was still running. On a system with 1.5Gig of RAM in Windows XP Home that 80mb of memory consumption can make a big difference, especially when you're running at the edge memory wise. Obviously, if I zone into a house or guild hall that is packed with 1000+ items all loading at once, I'm going to crash with out of memory. That would happen before AoD.

Not 100% sure if I should post here but for me, the game crashes at "creating entities" 5 times out of 6 times I try to start the game. On the times that I manage to get to the Character Selection screen, after I click play, the game crashes at "Updating Environment Map". Am I doing something wrong? It just started acting up yesterday and was working for the past week without problem. I haven't changed the settings recently other than turning fullscreen on. However, it doesn't work in windows mode now either.

I have been able to replicate this issue on two machines - my main rig and a gaming laptop. Both are running Win 7 64-bit, but beyond that are very dissimilar.

I have also narrowed this down - at least in my case - to the "assetcache" folder and contents. Although I am running non-streaming, this folder is included in my install - along with two small *.vdb files (asset and asset1). Basically, in order for me to launch problem free, I need to delete this folder before each start of the Launcher - or at least before I click "Play."

What I don't understand is, if I am not streaming, why do these files increase in size? They are not increasing by much, but they are changing. Is there any way, with the full, non-streaming client - to prevent the game from creating this folder, as well as prevent the contents from being utilized in the non-streaming client?

It should also be noted that I have crashed in game - on three or so occasions - with the same generic error that pops up when the "entities" crash occurs. When this does occur, it is very soon after my character spawns in to the world. My guess is that the client is writing something to these *.vdb files and encounters an error and crashes.

Hopefully this info helps. As noted earlier in this thread, this issue started to occur with the launch of this GU. The game ran pretty well up to that point.

I'm not sure this is a streaming problem. I preloaded the entire game (a bit over 15 GB) last week and it shouldn't be streaming anything anymore

Let me join here to say I have the exact same problem : 4-5 crashes in a row at "creating entities".

I have Win7 64bits, EQ2 is fully installed on the hard drive (an SSD), 17+Go and I use the full installation launcher.

The weird thing is, ingame, when I type F10, I can see the "Baby Dragon walking" window : I thought that meant EQ2 is streaming something ? How does that happen when you play with full install ?

Is this only effecting people using version 4 launcher or are other launchers effected by this? I had an issue with v4 streaming launcher and had to switch to v4 full asset instead. Anyone using a different launcher?

When this happens, my fix is to run the "Validate Assets" button in the ... um ... Tool box thingy (the button has a hammer on it, lower left of the launchpad). Once I run that, I can get in. Worked again just now. Both computers crashed at "Loading entities...", running the "Validate Assets" feature allowed me to log right in on both machines. Typically it's NOT both computers that crash at the same time, usually it's one or the other - I think this was the first time they BOTH crashed.

Hope this info helps y'all fix this highly annoying problem, if there's more info I can provide to help out, just say what!!

Hi Joshua,

This is still an issue for me, although I have found a way to pretty much eliminate it - at least as far as I am concerned. I run the following batch file immediately after logging in to the launcher and before clicking "Play:"

RD /S /Q B:GamesEQ2assetcache & COPY C:Users***DesktopTestmusicMX_GU62_MAIN_THEME.mp3 B:GamesEQ2musiczones_exp08 & COPY C:Users***DesktopTestmusicFREEPORT_GUILDHALL.mp3 B:GamesEQ2musiczonesGuildhalls

I do believe that the "assetcache" folder is the culprit - again, at least as far as I am concerned. I have not crashed once since I began running this batch file - and I have been running it for 3+ weeks now. The music "copy" is just something I did for Frostfell, and also because I enjoy the "Old" EQ2 theme more than the new iteration.

Hopefully this will help some folks out.

**spelling

My husband and I are both getting the same thing. Once more, repeated attempts do allow us to log in. We are on almost identical machines - Windows 7 64-bit. Not sure whether we are running the streaming client or not, however I am also experiencing the issue with shading. For instance, a mount that is all white is half grey and so on or the outfits don't appear quite right. One time I even had the wings on a fae seemed more geometric when in motion - I could see the triangles. Little things like that. We haven't opened a ticket at this point as we do seem to still be able to get in.

Sometimes it helps validating the assets and sometimes it still dies at Creating Entities. If I get to the character select screen, I know it's okay, but usually I'll still have the graphics issue.

This problem seems to be getting worse. W7/x64, keeps crashing regularly between Creating Entities and Loading Entity Resources (I'd say 2 out of 3 attempts on average). A month ago things seemed fine.

You know it's going to happen when the music stops at "Creating Entities..." for about 10 seconds. Eventually the progress bar will change to "Loading Entity Resources..." and the Windows-App-Crash Window comes up.

Deleting the various cache-folders doesn't help the issue at all.

This needs to be fixed.

I have had the same issue as well, Ticket#'s 120107-000005 and 120107-000081. I have sent files, and tried everything support has told me, still it remains. I am sure it's a Launcher or programming issue on Sony's side. I have a few friends that have this issue also. This problem did not start until after the launch pad update. Please fix this, I have sent so much information to Sony on this.

This is still happening for me. I had some extra time yesterday so on a whim I tried running the validate assets before logging in - and it crashed, same place, loading entities. Cancel, run "Validate Assets" again, logged right in. /sigh

It is random when/if this happens. Could be one machine, the other, or (rarely) both at the same time. Very similar hardware: both are intel CPUs, ASUS boards, and Sapphire Vapor X video cards, just different models of each. Both run win 7 64 bit Pro.

Do I need to submit a ticket and stuff?

PS: Welcome back TSR Joshua, hope you got lots of rest over your holiday as we're not gonna let you rest again for a while!

Simply stating it has occurred does not help that much as there are a great deal of factors that can result in this behavior. It makes it increasingly difficult to identify, classify, and resolve, when the causes are all over the place.

Support tickets with your diagnostic files (MSINFO/DXDIAG) along with your LaunchPad.log and dbg log files would work best. Posting the incident number here for the ticket with all that information would be the most efficient for me to be able to inspect and make recommendations (or create reports to submit to development for server side fixes).

Just for kicks, I disabled the SuperFetch service on my Win7 x64, and for some reason I have only had 1 crash (out of 10+ logins) since then. Could be coincidence though, there was a large patch the other day and they may have fixed some of the problem with it.

Still, disabling SuperFetch is something you can try if you're still experiencing crashes.

Edit: You may have to reboot after disabling the service to notice any changes
