View Full Version : Kaspersky finds a worm in the new Launcher. Also, game is leaking memory

Kaspersky is repeatedly finding a worm (or something extremely similar to a worm) and putting the new Launcher into quarantine. I've downloaded the full Launcher twice now. It will run fine at first, but after I quit the game and then restart from the Launcher, and the Launcher tries to update, Kaspersky freaks out again. I trust Kaspersky over Sony :/ , but I don't know how I'll get updates.

To play the game I have to simply start from the eq2 exe.

The memory leak in the game now is -very- pronounced for my computer since getting the update/expansion (running Windows XP). I have to quit out once every hour if I linger in Freeport, even on extremely low quality settings. Also got an unrecoverable out of memory error just trying to zone into my home.

I don't have Kaspersky, but I'll second the memory leak. Never had trouble before, but now I get constant out of memory errors.

I don't have Kapersky, but I have Norton. It is also saying the launcher.exe has a worm. Wish I could experience the memory leak, but it is now 72 hours after the servers went down, and between reinstalling the game twice, since the old patcher defaulted to the streaming client, I still can't log in. Maybe by Monday I'll be back in game; unbelievable.

Be careful when using the streaming client, I was told it crashes left and right.

About 1 hour of game play:

3x Critical Error Messages (I think all at the same tiime, but not sure)

#1: App ran out of memory requesting 262176 bytes (limit: 2048mb, current 956mb)

#2 Exactly the same as above, but requesting 528 bytes

#3 Exactly the same as one (not difference in request either)

It is simply memory being consumed and Freeport Combined is HUGE so it will take up a ton of memory. Swapping that memory in and out, including your pagefile, will create overhead. Windows XP doesnt take too kindly to requests for memory above the addressable limitation and this is something we cannot directly affect but can help to alleviate on our end (and will be).

I don't use XP. Further, it looks as if I have plenty of available memory as it is asking for less than I have.

We have had these problems on and off for years, and while I want to be respectful of your efforts I am simply not going to bite from the apple that says "its your fault/hardware/setup/etc..."

Wife's computer (running the exact same hardware but with far less system overhead and registery monkery) crashes on occassion while mine is mostly stable (until now). Her issues do not occur often enough to warrant raising the flag, but just wanted to throw that in as well.

That is fine but when you do want to be open to exploring the possibility go ahead and post your DXDIAG information

You're 1 GB over the limitation for 32bit Windows. This can lead to many situations where you will run out of memory (addressable memory space) it may be time for a 64 bit OS. Optimization to alleviate this type of issue are always ongoing but theres very little we can do about a 32bit OS limitation.

32bit OS can only address up to 4GB. You have 5GB total (system and video ram combined). The OS also reserves nearly 700MB for hardware, leaving only 3.3GB for everything on your system (EQII, Windows, everything else) to share.

The memory issues are being discussed on another thread over in Performance support if you'd like to contribute. The issues are being reported and a hotfix is going out tomorrow but there are some things that need to be understood about the 32bit limitations. Here's the thread, http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...topic_id=510547

Sorry, I realise that this is not something you may be able to assist upon but I have found the same problem with Kaspersky.

It did not prompt me for user action as it usually would, it simply automatically deleted the launcher and restricted all use for it. I then went into the steam folder and used the exe there, everything was working fine and dandy until the servers came down this afternoon and then I lost access to my characters, showing now only 1 unplayable on F2P - and not allowing the creation of additional characters. (See post http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...topic_id=511068) with which you also assisted.

I too have opened a ticket on this (111209-001423)but I feel the problem potentially stems from the fact that I haven't patched today since servers went down. So the invisible character problem is a version conflict, brought on by Kaspersky's labelling of the Launcher as a worm.

So, I'm unsure of how to unlabel the launcher as a worm, I'd then have to find a way to allow the launcher to run through Kaspersky, (I'm looking into both these things ATM but any help would be hot), this would therefore allow me to patch which would in turn fix my invisible character issue.

Sound reasonable/Shed any light please?

Cheers,

Regards,

Cam

After reinstalling my PC I ran into the very same troubles with EverQuest and Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Also there is an issue with KAV freezing the whole PC when Launchpad starts pre-downloading the game files (from the network scanner component). Solution to this is to add Launchpad as 'Trusted Application' and select 'Do not scan network traffic' for it. Contacted Kaspersky yesterday and they just gave me a heads up on this issues -- The files were added to the PDM whitelist. Detection will disappear within 6 hours. Please see if the issue is resolved afterwards. -- So maybe problems are gone soon.
