Ever since the first screaming deer death on the Isle, I have played with sound off about 99.9% of the time. And today, I can't get the dying direbear squeals to cease.

I went to options->sound and everything is all the way to the left on min plus everything saying it mutes is checked. I don't have music, but I still have footsteps and death (shudder) embellishments and ummm crickets.

Am I overlooking some obvious Mute All button or what?

Pathetica

Adding on here - I have more or less stopped worrying about the non muting sounds as I now have a crash on zoning into my Lavastorm home.

I am feeling a wee bit of frustration, and will go read and see if there is a previous thread with an applicable reply to I can't play this game now - even with unmutable sound.

Pathetica

Any custom UI modifications? Revert to the default for testing or make sure they are up to date (even then, a custom UI might cause issues as we cannot ensure that the maker is keeping it up to date).

We can also just clear out the cache and configuration settings directly as well in case any leftover tokens are in the ini files.

You may want to make backups and then delete the following files and folders:

cache folder

eq2_recent.ini

eq2_default.ini

EverQuest2.exe

eq2.ini

As well as the character specific files, these will appear as such:

Servername_CharacterName_EQ2_uisettings.ini

Stationname_characters.ini

To do this, please follow these directions:

1. First look for your EverQuest II Extended directory. You can find the default directory in (for Windows XP): C:Program FilesSonyEverQuest II (for Windows Vista/7): C:UsersPublicSony Online EntertainmentInstalled GamesEverQuest II

2. Click on MY COMPUTER and then proceed into local disk C:

3. Navigate your way to the default directory, or your chosen installation directory.

4. Next look for any files explained above and delete them.

5. Afterwards, please start EverQuest II to have these files re-downloaded by the patcher.

If deleting these files does not resolve your issue, you can restore your backed up files and folders and retain your hotkeys, contact lists, and display settings.

Ummm Josh. That stuff is all for the stuck character, right? Please tell me getting rid of sound is easier? Please?

And a big thank you for the unsticking me from the zone to Lavastorm house crash. But, please, Pathetica is a good gnome and landing in front of two level 95 guards in Commonlands was uncomfortable.

Cheers!

Pathetica

Open the EQ2_recent.ini and find a line that reads master_volume #.####

Change the #'s to 0.000 and save the file. Let me know if that works.

Reproducing it is one of the most important parts of the troubleshooting process and if I am unable to do so we know where to start digging.

When troubleshooting an issue like this that cannot be produced (i.e. mine work, yours do not), then we can start looking on your system first instead of just submitting a bug report and hoping for the best. This is an efficient and standard troubleshooting process I would recommend anyone to follow.

Report, Reproduce, Resolve. It's not intended to be insulting. It's intended to give you a live person who is actually testing while he makes recommendations. The taking ownership recommendation is very valid as you are saying your client side configuration files aren't saving the changes you make in game or even honoring them.

All files are accessible and none are read only. I, frankly, don't understand how it could be a problem with saving changes when the sliders don't work so I can't do any changes? I have even tried loading ui from default blue to default and so on. Still the sliders are stuck at min - which is a lie. I can mute and unmute the npc talking.

edited because cats on keyboards are not a good thing

I am having the same issue. I took Joshua's advice to change the master volume # to 0.000000 in the "eq2_recent.ini" file but once I launched the game, it would default back to 0.460000.

I managed to get all the sounds muted by first opening the launcher THEN making the change to the .ini file and saving. I also changed the volume setting in the "eq2_default.ini" file too just to make sure.

Works like a charm now but I'm guessing once I close everything it will default back to the system settings, so I'll have to do this everytime.

Meh... as long as I know how to fix it until an actual hotfix is released.
curious if you are running vista, which directory are you changing it in, vista will have at least two location. If you are running the 64bit version of vista the will be a (x86) appended to it.
compare the dates on the files to see if they are both being updated. or delete one file from each of the directories and see if it is put back in both

If you are really ambitious you can do the following

1. create a directory outside of program files, name it SOE

2. under that create eq2 so the structure is X:soeeq2 X: is just a place holder, not sure how many drives you have

3. copy one of the other two directories into the new one

4. reinstall the launcher and point it at the new install.

This method gets it out of the control of the UAC and the other security enhancements that came in with Windows Vista, in vista the UAC was sadly lacking and really buggy. The newer implementation in Windows 7 is a lot more stable and functional but still has major issues with anything that is updated frequently. I have been installing all of the games outside of the Program files and Programdata directories since vista was first release in alpha status. It is a PIA to do this, but think you will find that it is a lot easier to work with.

have seen things like this reported on other game forums also where someone tries to change something or change the default UI and can never seem to locate the correct directory easily
