View Full Version : Old launcher updates to even older station launcher..........

I'm trying to log in to the game after todays AOD update. I click the icon for the old, prefectly reliable, didn't need to be changed launcher, and it automatically installs a new launcher. It looks like a wristwatch, morphs into a stopwatch labeled Station.com, has no play button, no eq2 game, and I'm told is an ancient version of station launcher.

I would like to log in. Can anyone explain why I'm getting what I am getting, and where I go from the stopwatch?

I cant tell you how that stopwatch got there because I have no clue, it's a separate Station LaunchPad altogether and shouldnt be included in StatioN launcher and is definitely not included in LP3 or LP4.

It sounds like your old LP1 is not picking up the upgrade to the new LaunchPad (LP4).

One way to fix this is to install [from this URL] into the same location as your game assets. This shouldn't be required, but it is a way to fix your installation if it doesn't upgrade properly.

-dan

Very odd.

Easiest way for you to break out of that though is to just update the Launcher manually yourself. Download this installer: http://launch.soe.com/installer/EQ2_setup.exe and select to install it to the directory that your GAME FILES are located. That should do the trick.

Did that, I got the new LP installed, on my Vista 64 desktop it created a shortcut to EverQuest IILaunchPad.exe to start EQII which works ok, but on my Win 7 laptop (ran the same updater) it did not create a shortcut and the LaunchPad.exe I have there opens the winamp thing and I have no way to open the game on the Win 7 machine. There is no .exe file in my EQII folder that was modified that works.

DanKinney wrote:

It sounds like your old LP1 is not picking up the upgrade to the new LaunchPad (LP4).

One way to fix this is to install [from this URL] into the same location as your game assets.
Odd. Only other problem I ran into was that it gave an error similar to the prompt to overwrite the launcher. It said It needed 15 gigs to install when I only had 4, in the end I think it only added like 800mb since I did it over my old installation.

So maybe you saw the error instead of the prompt but thought it was the prompt since you might have seen it when doing it the first time on the other PC?

If it were me I'd probably just pick a new location to 'install' so it makes a shortcut etc. but not let it fully patch. Then move all the files from my old install location to the new one (except for the patcher exe's) so it has minimal patching time when I start it again.

My old launcher worked fine for years, and this new one seems advertising heavy and feature light compared to it. I may simply decide it's not worth the effort and just cancel some of the accounts since I don't intend to buy AOD anyway. All I'd like to do is get back to where I was yesterday. Launch, select character, get into the game.

Additionally, the new launcher can't find the directory holding the Everquest2 files without manual help, something even amateur programmers know how to do. I cite ACT, an EQ2 parsing program, and several secondary market UI's, which successfully find the files for EQ2 whereever they might be 100% of the time. Those programmers do those things for a hobby in their spare time.

Every launcher or patcher in every application I know of can find it's files in the directories, except SOE's.

DanKinney wrote:

It sounds like your old LP1 is not picking up the upgrade to the new LaunchPad (LP4).

The operative question is why? It's SOE software dealing with SOE software. I know it's a novel concept, but when you autoupgrade launchers, why do you only auto upgrade those you feel like?

same issue i had a perfect launcher now i have the stopwatch , all this talk of LP1 lp4 thast russian to me

so i clicked the url link , and its saying error when i try to repair the thing , so idk what to do , cna you post a guide or walkthrough of how to do this for non computer geniuses

1) Don't make any snarky remarks here or the thread will get closed down.

2) As I commented in another post all this talk of what We are supposed to know about where our files are and our responsibility may be "true" but why couldn't they just program their end to tell when we tried to log in with a station launcher or launch pad or whatever they want to call their "on switch" to recognize where the old "file was located" and go there to install the new one?

Again, VERY user unfriendly, like the mods here.

Looks like LP1 is not updating correctly to LP4. I've got one installation old enough to be running LP1. The other started with LP3. I'm going to try updating LaunchPad manually on the older system. If that doesn't work, I'm just going to reinstall the game from scratch. They may be able to resolve the auto-update issue quickly, but it makes more sense to me to just clear out old crap and make the job easier for the software.

Unfortunately, modern systems are simply too complicated to run reliably for too long. That's why I never upgrade Windows to a new version but install clean. EverQuest II is nearly as complex as an OS installation and has many of the same issues when you try to patch it too much. It would be very nice if our computers were easier to maintain, but that just isn't the case.

-= Therendil =-

/sigh, well, we all knew this day would vome, as all the other MMO providers (and blizzard too) shift toward single app launchers, leave it to SOE's execs to be counter-intuitive . . .

But my hat goes off to the brave souls of the tech support and CS reps who are left to inform us of the news, thank you for getting back to us so quickly.

I mean, when I saw the announcement for the new launcher, I thought 'Oh, that's nice for the folks who only play EQ2.' I never imagined that the Station launcher, which has worked almost perfectly (and even then the only issue I had was updating the friends lists on occasion) for me for years as a single-app launcher for EQ, EQ2, and SWG when I played, would be broken by it. I have to admit this is kind of annoying. Saying you are working on a way to do it when it was worked out five years ago really makes me wonder.

Now when I try to log in via the Station launcher it does a 2+ gig download and then I get the error that the client version does not match the server version or some BS.

Yes, for the old, beta Station Launcher 1.0.9 for EQ2. It will continue to work for other games, but it is very, very old at this point (2+ years).

The updated Station Launcher (1.1.13) is better, but it is aging as well.

-dan

I had the problem with LP1 'upgrading' to the wristwatch launcher on my Win7 system. Might want to see if OS version is a factor.

I have held out against LaunchPad for years, instead running Station Launcher for its greater feature set. The biggest reason I now use and support LaunchPad is that I am now convinced that the team (with Dan's helpful advice and cattle prod) is working to deliver a LaunchPad with all the functionality that Sation Launcher had. They aren't there yet, but LP4 clearly has SL fetaures that were not present in LP3.

-= Therendil =-
