DON'T PANIC! It's really happening and it's not as bad as you might think. ZAM got to sit down with Dave Georgeson and get the details as SOE merges the two EQ2 services.Read all about it at ZAM!Join us in ZAM IRC Chat if you'd like to talk about it! Instructions are here, or you can use EQ2 Wire's web portal.

Only things I'm wondering:

1) what about players of both EQ2 and EQ2X who have all their purchased character slots filled on both services? Are they going to have to whittle down their character #s/buy more slots, or will the available slots of both games be added to each other?

2) will we now be allowed to move characters between Freeport server/Exchange servers and other EQ2 servers?

SJ from other thread:

If you purchased character slots, you'll still have them. No worries.

The only tricky bit is if you purchased character slots on *both* EQII Live and EQ2X servers (only a handful of people did this). In that case, you will still get all the slots you had purchased. Here's an example for clarity:

You purchased four slots on AB. (7 + 4 = 11 total slots)

You then purchased five slots on Freeport. (7 + 5 = 12 total slots)

Then after the free-to-play conversion, you would have (7 + 4 + 5 = 16) slots available at your disposal when you log in.

Me:

Touched yes. Answered directly no.

I take it to mean you are losing access to your characters but that was not stated directly.

Silat

Editted to add SJ's Comment.

That does not quite answer it.

Example:

Currently I have 7 characters on live and 7 on extended. I purchased 0 extra slots on either.

According to the above logic after the merge I will be unable to access 7 of my charaters.

Since his math was 7 + purchased slots + purchased slots. Not 7 + 7 + purchased slots + purchased slots.

Silat

Which is what I was asking. Time to calculate how many free slots I actually have.

Interesting, I'll say that.

As far as I know, this is the first time since 1999 that SOE actually spoke about a "possible" game-changer "before" an expansion came out. (anyway, that I am aware of)

I have a wait and see attitude, but I give Smokejumper and SOE credit for honesty and consideration given in this communication in a timely manner.

I'm more pleased about that^ then any changes that may or may not occur ingame.

'Course I'm older than dirt and these things matter to me.

I would have switched to EQ2X had it not meant leaving my guildies and friends, so I never woried about this before. Since I am Live now, I will be Gold later. If I elaspe and drop to Silver what happens to my more then 4 characters? Do I loose access to them? Do they get deleted? Are they escentially grandfathered or treated as though I had purchased additional slots or something?

Also the veteran question goes the other way too, will we loose vet rewards now? I can't image we would because effort was spent to add 8yr stuff but this IS soe and they've done nuttier stuff.

Over all I think this merge is a grand idea.

I'm not too bad off - I only have 4 characters on freeq, and I have a couple free slots on live. But my guild leader has 2 accounts, plus her partner's 1, and they've filled all slots in both live and freeq. That's going to be expensive as hell to merge without losing some alts.

I also wouldn't mind discount server transfers - no sense having guilds on two servers if everyone can play together. But that's less urgent to me, since I'll still have access to the ones on the other server.

Pricing Matrix. At the bottom it shows station cash access, and says reoccurring Gold memberships will get 500 a month.

More feedback from the guildies, though I doubt we'll get anything for this. Many of us copied characters to freeq to help friends get started there. Copying was more expensive than moving, with less stuff coming with. Is there going to be any sort of compensation for this, as that expense is now worthless? (Like I said, I'm not expecting anything, under the argument that "We did get the copy and over a year to use it and those characters will still be available on freeport server." But official word to bring back would be helpful.)

^ I'm thinking you'd be ok with that, I just started a F2P and my freeblood was already unlocked on it (so what I have I keep). You "might" have to unlock specific classes and such though. If SoE stopped making money on EQ2, EQ2 would go away.

From what I have read, the fee is not that small, and considering that we are talking about 17 characters among which there are no class repeats and only one race repeat (and that only because I made one character as a place holder in hopes that someday othmir are made into a playable race), the fees would add up very quickly to way more than the monthly fee.

Plus, there are other features of a subscription that would make people want to pay it, such as being able to equip legendary and fabled gear, more bag slots, no limit on money per character, the ability to sell on the broker, master level spells, etc.

...and as I mentioned in my post that you quoted: "Given that I would renew my subscription when I could, it would be a waste of money to unlock those races and classes that are not available to a silver membership."

I am not asking for full access if my subscription lapses, just to be allowed to log onto characters that I already have... maybe do some crafting. My main has some legendary gear, so even if I were allowed to log onto him at silver level, I couldn't really play him unless I got some lesser gear (maybe not even then). Not to mention that I have set up a house as a shop where all my characters can sell things... I would not expect that to be accessible at a silver level.

Basically, if I had to let my subscription lapse, the result would be the same as it is now... I would not see any point to even logging in as only 2 of my lesser characters would be available... if they even end up on character slots that are not locked. Of course, if they are on locked slots I wouldn't even be able to log in at all to buy anything from the marketplace anyway.

I have payed enough over the years that I have played that I don't think being allowed to always be able to log onto characters that I already have is asking too much. It would be a nice perk for long time subscribers to be allowed minimal access to all available characters on an account even if the subscription drops to silver level for a short time.

Of course, I suppose I could plan on a permanent drop to silver level... purchase all the classes and races, starting with those of my existing characters... the way I bought all my current character slots. Then I really could stop paying anything. I would, of course, miss my broker slots, bag slots, bank slots, the unlimited money per character, etc... but at least I would not have to worry about having to come up with money to play ever again.

Edit: Thinking about it, they could give out race/class unlocks in the veteran rewards for people who have been playing for x years for those who find themselves unable to pay for a month or two. That would certainly be a nice gesture in these uncertain times.

I'm not there yet but it would be something to look forward to and would definitely reward those that were here since launch.

I am not quite there yet either, I just got my year 6 reward this year.

I have a friend (also a 6 year veteran) who would be in a worse case than myself even though he has fewer characters than I do (or maybe because of that). He had bought some slots (actually, I gifted them to him) and all his slots are filled. He is currently unable to play and has been for several months.

If he tried to come back to play as a silver account, he would be unable to log onto any of his characters because he has: a sarnak, 2 high elves, 3 ratongas, a dwarf, a wood elf, a fae and an erudite... but since the erudite is a necromancer, that character would also be locked (and some of his other characters are also classes that would lock them). His main is a ratonga wizard.

Would he be expected to delete characters that he has worked on for years just so he could create a new alt with which to log in so he could access the marketplace to pay to unlock one of his remaining characters? He already deleted his 2 lowest level characters when he dropped from a station access account to a normal subscription and I know that he plans to buy more slots when he is able to come back so he could recreate those. In order to free up a slot as a silver account, he would have to delete 4 more characters.

It would not be so bad if the button to buy slots on the character select screen actually worked or if the marketplace could be accessed online. Of course, even that would not help much since even the services you buy on the marketplace are items that you have to use as a character... and that would also make it impossible for someone else to gift things to a locked account.

Edit: Another thought - They are grandfathering in character slots for people that had characters on both live and extended prior to November 10 so that none of their characters are locked when the change goes into effect. They could do something similar for those who have only ever played on live servers and grandfather in race/class unlocks for characters that have existed since [a certain date] (or they could even limit it to just subscribers who purchased either the original game or one or more of certain of the previous expansions) as a gesture of good will to long time customers.

I would leave the details in question up to Sony's discretion, and really, this would only affect those whose accounts may lapse in the future, or those like my friend who return to the game solely because it is now free.

Think about it... someone who left the game for one reason or another and comes back because it is now free to play... only to find that none of their characters can be played due to race and/or class. Does Sony really think that such a person would stay? That they would ever pay any more money ever again?

I keep hearing about gold being grandfathered in and merged with the live accounts, but what about the silver, or even bronze? I myself have a silver account on EQ2X, my kids have bronze, but we all have live accounts. What will happen with those characters/accounts?

If you ever let your payments lapse, it will be downgraded to silver. Your EQX account will be merged with your live account. If you have characters on both live and EQX servers, then you will have bonus character slots grandfathered in based on the following formula:

Total occupied slots (the slots must have characters in them to be considered in this formula) on both games prior to November 10 - 7 (base slots for a gold account) - slots bought on live - slots bought on EQX = total bonus slots.

Your total character slots (on a gold account) will be: 7 + slots bought on live + slots bought on EQX + bonus slots from the formula above. You would lose access to 3 of those slots (i.e. they would be locked) if your account downgraded to silver until you either bought more slots or renewed your subscription.

Edit: Oh, and since you had a live account, the conversion of the live account to gold (or silver if you let your payments lapse) will take precidence over whatever your EQX account status was.

You won't lose your guild. If you play as a non-subscriber you may have to do one-time unlocks depending on your char's race and class.

2. As I said on #1, you might have to do one-time unlocks. Only certain races and classes are part of the free portion. For example, the only toon I'd be able to play on a free account without unlocking is my Human Swashbuckler, as both that race and class are non-restricted to Silver members.

Four free races included with Free and Silver Membership are: Human, Erudite, Barbarian and Half Elf. The Freeblood race is only available vie the Marketplace. Eight free classes included with Free and Silver Membership are: Swashbuckler, Brigand, Wizard, Warlock, Guardian, Berserker, Templar and Inquisitor. The Beastlord class is only available with the purchase of the Age of Discovery expansion. http://eq2.zam.com/wiki/Membership_...atrix_%28EQ2%29

3.
guild related question. I am guild leader. Both my subs expire in like 3 months and after all this I am not planning on renewing, nor playing as silver because I cannot without paying soe money twice. paying them for 7 yrs for eq2 seems more than enough.

What happens to the guild (was founded on 11/11/2004 so kinda lame to "vanish") and the other people in there if they choose to keep playin (which I doubt but ya)...

the question is because if i stopped paying right now as a subscriber, the guild will be still there for the ppl who chose to keep playing. Even if i never subbed ever again.

Though I would strongly suggest giving dual leadership to another person you really trust that is sticking around, just in case they want to change guild halls or some such.
