I bought a ASUS G73SW XT1 to replace my old ASUS G50 that died recently.I expected the FPS to not jump significantly due to the change in resolution, but what I did not expect is the 20 FPS drop when I turn on GPU shadows. Using CPU shadows is an even more ridiculous drop (33 drop in FPS) and renders the game completely unplayable.The drops I'm getting on the new one (GeforceGTX 460m) are significantly larger than the drops I got on the old one (Geforce 9800m) when using shadows. Not being particularly computer savvy, I can't figure out why that would be since both the CPU and GPU are better than my old ones.

Are all the drivers up to date? Video card specifically. Make sure you have the latest Windows service pack, all critical/important updates, and also update DirectX with the information below.Please download and run the file linked in the article below. I did as you stated.Everything appears to be in order. FPS still tanks when I try to turn on either type of shadows.I read somewhere on the forums the GTX460 cards do not work well with EQ2? Is that true? And if so does the GTX560 work better with the game? I still have a few days to return if this one won't work with well with the game.

In your control panel, you have Power Options that can be modified.You can create your own power plan or click Change plan settings next to your selected plan (preferably a high performance plan). Next, click Change Advanced Power Settings, expand PCI Express, and turn off Link State Power Management.Give it a test and see if that helps with the GPU shadows. The CPU shadows, however, will always be a huge hit on performance.

Looks like the power management was off by default with the power plan I was using.It's certainly in a playable range with GPU shadows on, just the very large dip in performance when I turned them on was a surprise since the old card only dropped about 5 FPS with GPU shadows on.

That's a big performance hit and can be toggled even if GPU shadows are selected.

I am having much the same issue, with almost the exact same laptop, and it only started recently (in the last month or so). I'm going to check my power settings, but I am fairly certain that mine are set properly.

Getting much the same thing, verified all settings on my computer and still have to have game settings lower than I did on my previous laptop to get the same FPS...Previous was an Asus G2S-B1, Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz, 4GB DDR2, GeForce 8600m video, Windows 7 Home Premium.Current is an Asus G73JW-A1, Core i7 740Q, 8GB DDR3, GeForce 460 GTX m, Windows 7 Home Premium.

There is a checkmark available in Display under Advanced that was made for the 8x00 series of nVidia cards. I'm not in the game but it's related to re-using vertex buffers. Try toggling that and see if it makes any difference. I'm not saying it will as I don't have the 4xx series but it might be worth a shot.
