It would appear Everquest II is leaking ram over time

Could you describe the behavior of this memory leak? Because all you are showing me is how much ram each instance is using and it isn't indicative of a problem in and of itself.

Is it affecting performance?

Especially in an MMO, you will always be loading new assets, resources, and swapping them in and out.
This doesn't seem indicative of an actual memory leak issue. Usually in those cases it will continue to grow until it tries to violate another process' memory and then it will crash, etc.

EQ2 normally grows a bit as you run around and zone, as it caches things.

I can have one instance of the client open, nothing else opened and I get an out of memory error eventually. I have 8GB of ram...

If you use maximum textures it can easily exceed 1.2gb. The best thing to do if running multiple clients (so for boxing) is to go into the followers and reduce graphical settings plus enter in this one command in eq2.ini:

force_low_mem_mode 1

I 5/6 box on a Q9650 with 4GB of ram...

If you are not willing to compromise on graphical settings on the additional boxed characters, then sure you might need a great deal more system memory. I'd just turn the graphics down on the screens im not watching 90% of the time, but that's just me.

Let's just agree that you are more than welcome to have any hardware you choose to have but when it comes to performance issues, when you have them you must be willing to compromise on your boxed characters graphical settings.

Really the only time it makes sense to build a new box with a Thuban is if you are doing media encoding on a budget, really. Forcing EQ2 to use less memory will not make it perform worse unless you used the cache command to reduce its' cache.

2. 64bit Vista or 7 has no real difference on a 32bit application that uses WOW32. The only way EQ2 would know if it's on 64bit is if it does the IsWOW64Process call. Even then it's limited to the 32bit limitations. There are ways around this limitation for a 32bit application but they are not supported by the staff here. I've posted about it on the Extended support forum.

The 32bit application still has the 32bit limitations due to the subsystem. As for the texture ram you are getting close to understanding how the crashes do occur. The amount of memory being used by EQ2 as shown by Task Manager is not showing all that is truly being used. When the video card overflows into system RAM it can cause buffer overruns. Thus, the crash.

Each client at maximum textures uses roughly 442Mb of video ram. When you alt tab away from the game the usage will drop much as the amount of ram used can drop when you switch from one application to another. That's a function of Windows itself.
