View Full Version : The Steam Community Overlay doesn't work

I've been using Steam more and more as a community tool to help keep in touch with friends without having to play in Windowed mode. It's really easy to Shift Tab while playing League of Legends, Oblivion, Sim City, Audiosurf, Amnesia, etc, and be able to send a quick message or see what they're saying to me. Instant messengers are getting left in the dust because of this.

However, even though the Steam Overlay works great with most other games that I play, it doesn't work at all with EverQuest II.

I will see it "Accessing the Steam Community" and I can see people logging in, logging out, and playing games. But when I try to "Shift Tab" it doesn't seem to work. No Steam Overlay.

Strangely enough, as ancient as EverQuest ONE is, it works with that game. Why doesn't it work here?

I'll send out a request but we do not support the steam overlay and I cannot provide any direct support for it.

Like the OP, I also use Steam very often for the social functions. I'd also like to be able to take screenshots directly with Steam. EQ2 seems to be the only game that doesn't allow it to work. Heck, even games that aren't even sold through them work fine once I add them.

What exactly is causing something so simple to not work? And how hard would it be to fix?

In fact, this game is the only one I know of that doesnt. I think even EQ1 allows the use of it.

Also, doesn't it seem a little deceptive to sell a game through steam, while at the same time not surpporting the functions...?

We don't support a majority of policy or functions from any of our associated retailers. They do.

Companies that sell our games aren't gated from creating their own software for any purpose, even Steam's purpose, but that does not mean a relationship is implied and we need to support one another's software functionality.

I apologise for resurrecting an old thread but I’m currently also trying to find a solution to this.

Steam WILL launch eq2 successfully and load up the overlay, its reason you can still see chat message popups and friends logging in. The reason you can’t open the overlay though is because EQ2 is blocking the keypress shift-tab from passing outside of the eq2 client to steam, so steam is not seeing the keypress and will not open overlay. It does this for everything and will not let any keypresses be detected outside of the eq2 application while it’s in focus. Windowed mode makes no difference.

I’m not sure but I think there’s some multiboxing software that will let you manage multiple instances of eq2 that will allow keypresses to pass outside of the client. I’m looking into Innerspace, that may fix the issue but not sure if it’ll run with steam.

I’d very much like to find a way to resolve the problem though, maybe some sort of entry in one of the .ini’s?
