They came from a desire to sell more smedbucks. When it comes to smedbucks, SOE doesn't really give a rat's rump as to what fits in Norrath and what doesn't. The sabertoothed giant flying squirrel is merely the most recent example.

As much as I love well-crafted lore, I can't help but read this thread and chuckle....

Norrath is a big place. I'm sure there would be billions of animal species that exist there, just as they do here on Earth. When you look out over your lawn, do you see every single one of the millions of insects, reptiles, avians, and mammals that share that property with you? Do you know the exact specifics of their lifecycle, their discovery, and their evolution? On Earth, most people simply don't pay the majority of them any attention, if they even know of their existence -- and in Norrath, they're just not modelled and animated, because a full ecosystem would be a MASSIVE and completely unnecessary resource hog.

Personally, I'd rather see more lore on the many anonymous named mobs we have running around, the dungeons we pilfer daily for treasure, or more on the history of the cities and prominent locals where we live, rather than pressing for a 4,000 word lore backstory on a squirrel.

What's next, demanding indepth lore behind those seagulls that fly around in my guild hall's courtyard?

The brownies are still the same size, but the rest? Compaire fairies and will-o-wisps near the brownie camp to fairies in Oakmist Forest and Will-o-wisps in Commonlands. The fairies are twice the size, and the will-o-wisps are dramatically larger. The centaurs in Lfay are almost twice as big as the centaurs in Thundering Steppes.

Also the bixies are giant compaired to bixies in EQ1, but that doesn't appear to be unique to Lfay.
