Our exploration group is seeking information about the Greater Lightstone and Cannix Silverflame. Any particulars about why this lightstone is "greater" than any other one would be helpful. We are also trying to find out which order Cannix Silverflame might belong to as well as why the Lucanic Knights might attack and kill him (and might this have to do with the Lightstone or for personal reasons?)

Another thing I am wondering about is the powering of arcane objects. In the case of the Lightstone it "powered up" by heroic deeds while the Black Rock is powered by energies that were merely harvested from locational sources.

Back in EQlive, light sources were quite helpful for all races. Right from the very start of the game, players who started killing willowisps noticed that they dropped burned-out lightstones, lightstones, and greater lightstones. Players could equip a torch in their offhand if they needed to see at night, but the lumination was limited and turned everything a tint of red to reflect the fire from the torch. This also prevented them from using a shield, 2nd weapon, or other item with stats that would help them out. Regular lightstones gave off the same light radius as a torch, but at least the light was pure and made things easier to see in the dark. Greater Lightstones gave off a pure light and extended out about 2 times further than the torch. As an added bonus, you didn't need to equip it in order to use it. It simply had to be in an empty inventory slot (not inside a bag.) Greater Lightstones quickly became huge sellers for Barbarians, Humans, and Erudites, and even came in handy for all the other races who had natural nightvision. In terms of lore, the greater lightstone really isn't anything special. It was just an item made extremely popular (thus, Legendary) because of it's function at the time back when EQlive was still young. Before more advanced visual options such as increasing brightness and gamma of the screen could be used as an alternative to seeing in the dark were added into the game.

If he was making noise about restoring the Order of Marr or even the worship of Marr in and around Freeport the Lucanic Knights would target him for elimination for treason.

Cannix does drop a few hints that he belongs to some kind of organization. Since he sends you to seek out the statues that specifically have great significance to the Order of Marr it could be some splinter organization that survived the purges, or was inspired by the Order of Marr. Though unlikely, it is possible that some small fragment of the Order of Marr didn't come to Freeport's rescue during the Rallosian War, but stayed behind to guard their keep. If that was the case, Cannix could actually be a member of the Order. I still find that to be unlikely.

The Glowing Black Rock was an item created by arcane means to act as a trap for souls. First discovered in EQ1 when it was owned by Pyzon, a gnome necromancer. The theory runs that Pyzon's soul was trapped when she was killed wielding the loose stone. In EQ2 the magics empowering the stone have grown weak enough for Pyzon to escape into the euradite that discovered the stone. By the end of the quest line, it is almost certain that Pyzon is in control, not the euradite that found the stone. The final restoration of the magics probably trapped the euradite and allowed Pyzon to take full control of the body. Being trapped in the stone for 500 years seems to have warped Pyzon's personality to favor anything that makes the stone more presentable. In the end, we can't really be sure if Pyzon escaped the stone or not. The only thing we do know for sure is that we assisted in restoring the stone to its full magical power and transforming it from a hand slot item to a necklace.

For reference, here are the relevant portions of the dialog where Cannix refers to his Order shortly before being assassinated, and tells us that we will not be allowed to keep the Lightstone:

"I am truely sorry to have deceived you into thinking you could keep this stone. You must understand, it must stay with my Order. He's returning soon and we must preserve his artifacts to hasten his arrival. It has truly pained me to speak untruthfully to you. I hope you understand the importance of this matter."

You say, "I am not sure what you mean. I did the work for that, it should be mine!"Cannix Silverflame says, "You've been exceptionally brave and valorous in this quest. If it weren't for the dire need of my order to possess this stone, I'd gladly hand it over to you. You must understand... what was that?"You say, "What?"Lucanic Knight Initiate says, "This time there will be no escape! Your kind is extinct and you will join them soon!"Lucanic Knight Initiate kills Cannix Silverflame. You kill Lucanic Knight Initiate.I got my Greater Lightstone back. It looks like I now have in my possession a legendary Greater Lightstone. By following the directions of Cannix Silverflame, I was able to increase the power of the lightstone gradually. Cannix says this object has some importance among his people, too bad he isn't around anymore so I can ask him about it.

His comments definately seem to hint to the Order of Marr, or perhaps an order that was present when the Academy wasn't dominated by the Opal.

Although doesn't Marr have a 'lightbringer' type title? and the fact it's bothered him to be untruthful (marr is called the Truthbringer) and his comments on bravery and Valor (tenenants to worship of Marr) seem to hint he's from the Order of Marr. not to mention the comment of his 'kind' being extinct. (marr worshippers in freeport)
